SG could go invisible, fly, and had 'power bands' that emitted destructo-rays and the like. Also had 3 sidekicks, Jan and Jace (twins, I think for some reason I remember them being SG's niece and nephew, but I'm probably wrong) and their pet monkey, Blip. Anyhow, they could all fly and be invisible, like I said it was pretty cheesy. So, in 1994, Cartoon Network (one of the greatest channels in all of history) needed some original programming, so they took the SG character and made him a talk show host, coming to you live from Ghost Planet. His band leader, Zorak, and the technician (?) Moltar are both villans that he'd captured in the old series. This talk show is called Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and is 15 minutes long. SG interbiews guests such as Carrot Top, Bobcat Goldthwaite, The Ramones, and Adam West. Out of that show, Cartoon Planet was born. It involves SG and Zorak, and another prisoner, Brak. No Moltar on this one. Cartoon Planet was an hour long and aired on TBS with music by TMBG (see? this is relative in a roundabout way :) and SG would show cartoons and he and Brak and Zorak would talk in between. But Cartoon Network must have realized that everyone just watched it for SG and couldn't care less about the cartoons, so they shortened Cartoon Planet down to half an hour, and they only play one or two cartoons. But they don't have TMBG doing the music anymore :( Anyhow, that's who Space Ghost is. Amy :) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Aug 1996 06:54:17 PDT From: Ryan_Shepard@xn.xerox.com (Shepard,Ryan) Subject: FW: YAY! > I found the Istanbul (NC) single! Yahoo! Whoopee! Alright! "EDIT" (Janet Jackson) "Doo doo DOO doo doo di-doo-di-doo-doo" (TMBG, doing the famed melody, sampled, and it sounds cool) "This is a recording...." (Stevie Wonder....it was also sampled for De La Soul, that's how I know) Okay, don't get me singing this at work, now, thanks. *g* A little bit o' trivia: Daddy-O, from Stetsasonic (I mentioned this in an earlier post) also remixes "Love Shack" on the Love Shack single for the B-52's, if anyone's a fan. It was the worst effects I've ever seen, like hand-drawn stuff on the screen. I hope it comes on again. Mark mark, I agree....I've seen it. So to vent for a sec.... SHEP'S TOP TEN WORST FLICKS (I bet THIS becomes a thread, he he): 10: The Richard Moll flick 9. The Principal, with James Belushi. He gets to smack students into lockers. This was made in 1987, obviously long before civil lawsuits were the rage. People have jheri curls in this movie. Eazy-E must have been the hairdresser. It's too outrageous. 8. Breakin'. Enough said. 7. Breakin II, Electric Boogaloo. This one ranks higher than its' predecessor mainly for the scene where the 'good' dancers are working on the community center, and the 'bad' dancers throw a brick through a window. The 'good' ones know enough to run out and down under a highway underpass, where the 'bad' ones wait. Bad dancer leader: Oh, you're here....now we're gonna have a DANCE-OFF! (Some unknown bad dancer presses play on an oversized boombox and INSTANTLY the music starts.) 6. Creepshow. You wanna talk lousy segways (spelled incorrectly, I know) from story to story? Good Lord. 5. Hoosiers. Nope, sorry. It's not so much a plot thing, I recall just having a bad time at the theatre. 4. Ghost Dad. I think I speak for many. That one girl should have stuck with the Head Of The Class sitcom. 3. Poison Ivy. Whether or not Drew's cute (I can live without her, thanks)....she is a BAD ACTRESS. Do not make me repeat myself. And Tom Skerritt's naked butt? Is this necessary? 2. Red Sonja. Brigitte Nielsen, with a large wig, fights Cori Everson (who plays the bad witch). Now, in real life, Cori would have beaten the crap out of Brigitte. But when you're married to Sly Stallone, movie roles seem to pop up, I guess. 1. Shock Treatment. This, for those who don't know, is the SEQUEL to Rocky Horror Picture Show. Now, I used to act in RHPS, and I'm not really obsessed with the movie, but for them to attempt and make a sequel? I'm personally irritated. thank you for your time shep www.tripod.com/~RoadTrip/index.html "Hello, is Raoul there?" "Who?" "Ra-hum-hum." "WHO?" "Mary." "Mary?" I think it is funny that some of you think that Nirvana is any good. They have no skills at all. Kurt killed himself because he realized that his music was crappy! That's not why he killed himself. In his suicide note, he even states that the whole commercialism thing became too much. The only reason they got popular was because they made videos on MTV for Nevermind. Nevermind is one of the most mainstream albums ever made, that's why everyone (or all the posers) liked it. Now hold on a minute. I never said that Nirvana was a bad (read="untalented") band. Nirvana, in some instances, is a veryentertaining band. The songs are catchy. I'll admit, I like listening to Nirvana. I just felt that in the whole scheme of alternative/modern rock, Nirvana should not be placed on a pedestal at number 1. Unlike they TMBG, they NEEDED to go mainstream and make music videos to become good. Well, again, not the case. Pearl Jam went mainstream with the first album. And that's, IMHO, their best work. Public Enemy had to go mainstream, and I LOVE P.E. So going mainstream and making videos is not 'vital' to an artist becoming good. It's vital to them becoming more popular, good or bad. If they had any skills at all, they would have become popular before Nevermind, (which happens to be there best stuff) and would never have had to become mainstream or "alternative" in the first place. Now hold on a minute. I used to RAP in high school. We were good. Everyone thought so. Since we didn't promote ourselves, or become 'mainstream', would that not make us good? Nirvana being good or bad is not so much the point I'm hearing as it is that talent is the only thing that brings popularity. Bands that last are one of two things: talented or entertaining. They don't have to be both. shep www.tripod.com/~RoadTrip/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Aug 1996 09:48:38 PDT From: Ryan_Shepard@xn.xerox.com (Shepard,Ryan) Subject: FW: FW: Richard Moll and Shep's Worst 10 Movies > TOP TEN WORST FLICKS (I bet THIS becomes a thread, he he): This is extremely irresponsible behavior! So is DMB's "So Much To Say", where we play the "radio edit". Please. Spare us the editing. What else? A lot of the "test songs" that we encourage the listener to hear are not even the actual ones that are on the albums.....they're all edits or mixes. Why? To make songs more "playable". Whatever. Subject: If you're even gonna START talking about movies... Well, some of you out there will know why I cannot let a movie thread go unresponded to. And since I am the guy who introduced Sam and Randy and Weird Literary Finds to the list, I feel it is not unexpected of me to go off topic. There are not ten greatest movies of all time. There are five. In no particular order: Brazil, Batman, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Aliens, and Evil Dead II. But it hardly matters that these are the best because there is a largely ignored plethora of amazing motion pictures which are, in the main, less well known than many of the crappy box office smashes. As we all know, most people out there wouldn't know quality if it bit them in the ass. (Same reason why Alanis Morissette's record sold 11 million copies and TMBG still get called "quirky" in print.) This is hardly about a casual like and dislike of an entertainment product. This is about demanding more from artists and from ourselves and seeing to it that what survives is not what makes money or pleases the masses but, rather, that which truly adds to the world in some way. That's why I have started to like noise lately, as in some of the grating tunes by Beck and Ween, cause what some hear is noise and what I hear is music which if nothing else serves no commercial purpose, and when someone dares to satisfy no commercial interest in these jaded post modern 90s, we have to stand up and cheer. Also I like the music, I like the daring attempt to forge a song out of a slab of feedback. Same reason I like Natural Born Killers, it's a raging fireball, transformed by sheer force of will into the shape of a film, all the while subverting all that we recognise about film in general. So, what are these other films that shake the foundation? I'll try to be complete, and once again in no particular order. Star Wars, The Abyss (Special Edition), The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen, Blue Velvet, Wild At Heart, JFK, The Hudsucker Proxy, Fargo, Miller's Crossing, Terminator 2, Apocalypse Now, Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Godfather I and II (an editor, someone blurted? Go away, that wasn't even funny), The Thing (1982), Sweet Smell Of Success, Singing In The Rain, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Dr. Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange, Grand Canyon, Broadcast News, Alien and Alien 3, Blade Runner, Jaws, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, Duel, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, THX 1138, Schindler's List, Near Dark, Strange Days, Dead Alive, Meet The Feebles, Heavenly Creatures, The Frighteners, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Back To The Future, Die Hard, Predator, The Killer, Hard Boiled, Ed Wood, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, 12 Monkeys, Seven, Night Of The Living Dead (original), Robocop, Pulp Fiction, Smoke, Nobody's Fool, Tremors, Glengarry Glen Ross, Alone In The Dark, Poltergeist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Once Upon A Time In The West, gee I know I am being a bit arbitrary and incomplete but you get my point. All of those movies are either superb commercial projects with integrity, or films made on the fringe of the movie world which push the envelope and the art form forward. And then there are those personal faves which some people think are just frivolous (Poltergeist, Tremors, Predator...heh heh, I guess sometimes I see things others don't.) And of course this is all about trying to foist my own beliefs onto others, namely you. Like all of you, I know I'm right, and I desperately want you to believe me. So better and best is all subjective anyway even though I might believe looking at all those flicks above will make you a happier person...basically, here's what you do: Turn off the lights, sit close to the screen, turn up the volume, and ignore all other external stimuli. A movie is like a dream, and it is meant to engage your every sense. An Art of Noise record I have says on it that when you listen to music, time stands still because while you are in that perfect place the song puts you, nothing else matters, and all there is the experience. Well, that is a good analogy. Try to be inside the movie instead of an observer, and let the beautiful surface draw you into the core. Always remember you are watching a movie, and question the film's intent, cause if you're gonna be manipulated by Hollywood garbage (Independence Day) at the very least KNOW you are being manipulated, and that makes it okay to have a good time in spite of how you are being so intellectually drained. On the other hand if the film demands something from you, or gives you something you had not expected, then that defines what we miss so often in movies: the idea that the filmmakers actually think we're smart. Cause we are, and it's our fault that bad movies do well and spawn sequels. I will be happy to go into this more, including exceptions to every rule I named and how to deal with the wonderful world of exploitation, to anyone who is interested. And I should say that I've been on this list for a while and I have loved TMBG for a much longer period of time and they are still the greatest fucking band in the history of music. Maybe I shouldn't have unsubbed from that cinema list... The voice of chaos in a sea of reason, Mike PS not only do I fear that this was a needlessly long tome, unrelated to anything anyone has ever said here, but I also fear that none of you will ever let me live this down :) But at the moment I have nothing else to do with my film degree...heh heh ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Aug 1996 14:28:08 -1000 (HST) From: Steven Osborn Subject: boston shows are they really going to be there on the 8th? or is it the 6th? ive seen both dates at www.tmbg.com and its important for me, because i can attend on the 8th, but not the 6th.. big problems there. help? steven ------------------------------ From: tim.clark@rma.edu Organization: Randolph-Macon Academy Date: Thu, 01 Aug 96 21:00:00 -0400 Subject: STUFF! (% today a guy at work said he would take me to the They show this month at the 930 club, since he has been there before. so if i go i'll look for "the group"--i hope there's a sign or something. i don't know why some are so uptight about non-tmbg material here. yes, this is a list dedicated to tmbg, and everyone on this list loves tmbg. but i like reading what everyone has to say about other things in addition to tmbg stuff. i don't mind having a huge mailbox. i will admit that the topics do sometimes get way off tmbg. but there's only so much tmbgs to talk about. why not throw in other things about ourselves, so we may know one another better. we're practically friends; this is what friends do. but what do i know... i decided to throw in a few movies that changed me forever: UHF(Michael Richard rules!), Ghostbusters, Braveheart, Glory, Pulp Fiction, AV-Pet Detective, all the Naked Guns, Batman, Godzilla 1985. that's all i can think of now. and i liked ID4(Ind.day)--i put myself there, watching that huge fireball come toward me--imagine if that actually happened. what an awesome(huge) concept. "memo to myself: do the dumb things i gotta do--touch the puppet head" i love that. -Chakka ------------------------------ From: Matthew James Subject: Re: Postcards and Post-Modern MTV Date: Fri, 2 Aug 1996 00:45:21 -0400 (EDT) > Wow!!! Of course, maybe I shouldn't speak for Russ, but I > remember him asking for people to reply to him who have videos of TMBG he > doesn't have. Okay, I'm done... I received about a 2 hour tape of TMBG video stuff which included all of the Post Modern MTV dates and nothing on the tape is on the Russ Josephson collection, or at least I don't remember seeing any of it. I'm pretty sure the Post Modern MTV was not on it. I mean unless the list-admin begins moderating as Leo has threatened to do every list in the world is going to have at least a little off-topic discussion, it's inevitable. I think it's a matter of self-control really. If you can try to keep in the spirit of TMBG most of the time then everything should be ok. I like how these speeches pop up every time Leo threatens to moderate ;) You have done a great job with this list, btw Leo and on the homepages, too. They have no skills at all. Kurt killed himself because he realized that his music was crappy! The only reason they got popular was because they made videos on MTV for Nevermind. Nevermind is one of the most mainstream albums ever made, that's why everyone (or all the posers) liked it. Unlike they TMBG, they NEEDED to go mainstream and make music videos to become good. If they had any skills at all, they would have become popular before Nevermind, (which happens to be there best stuff) and would never have had to become mainstream or "alternative" in the first place. -Ethan ********************************************************** I totally agree with you!
