The Factory Showroom "James K. Polk" is essentially the same song as the original, but a different, more recent, recording. It's closer to the faster version they've been playing live of late than to the Istanbul version. As with the two versions of "Why Does The Sun Shine?," I like the faster version of "James K. Polk" a bit more than I like the original. That's saying quite a lot, since the original JKP escorted me lovingly through the Manifest Destiny section of my "Violence In American History" class, and I've always appreciated that small favor greatly. I believe it'd be proper to say "No one in the world > ever gets what *the person* wants" or "... what *one* wants." I'm fairly > positive. > I'm afraid you were cheated out of valuable tuition fees on this class. You should have gone with that other 1% of your instinct here, because the pronoun "he" is the most appropriate choice ("one" in this case would sound artificial and would be redundant). Yes, it is proper to repeat the subject of the sentence, but it is also often clumsy, tedious, and redundant. The entire function of pronouns is to replace that subject so that you don't *have* to repeat it. (You know: "saying all those nouns over and over can really wear you down...") Believe it or not, one of the usages of the pronoun he is as a gender-neutral reference to a person (i.e., you say "he" when you don't *know* the gender of the person, or when that gender is simply not important). E.g., "To each his own." "No one in the world ever gets what he wants..." These show the proper usage. "He," "she," and "it" are proper gender-specific singular pronouns ("it" being a neuter-gendered pronoun, used for non-humans and inanimates). There are a limited number of gender cases in our language, and because English has not retained much use of gender many of its speakers now conflate linguistic gender with biological sex more than speakers of some other languages might. This, coupled with the trend toward mindless PCism and general grammatical ignorance has led many people to decide that making the (larger) error of incorrectly mixing plural and singular is better than using pronouns properly. However, using "they" as a singular, gender-neutral pronoun makes a certain amount of semiotic sense and will possibly become standard usage within the next fifty years if thing continue as they have. Languages are fluid, and they change and evolve (or else they die out). This is one of the ways languages change. At the moment, however, "he" as a non-gender-specific singular pronoun is proper and "they" is not! m@t p.s. From: MYKE WEISKOPF presents THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS: THE INTERVIEWS (slightly modified for readability, no important text modified) Myke (Obscure Mag): I get a sense that Lincoln was the first album that They Might Be Giants were really established as a rock band. It seems to me that the songs on the first album were taken from this stockpile of those shows-- those really fun, loose, thematic shows-- whereas, with a song like "Ana Ng"-- it had a different feel altogether. It was really the first "single" that they had written. Bill Krauss: Actually, I gotta tell you, most of the songs on 'Lincoln' are from that same stock. My feeling is that 'Flood' was that record, because 'Flood' was the first record where most of the songs were written _for_ it. You know about the sophomore slump. They didn't jump it; they could have put ['Lincoln'] out, if we had had the time and the money, just about the time of the first album. By that reckoning, 'Flood' really is their second album. What it means is that it's not stuff from the trunks. The songs you've had your whole life to write generally goes on your first album, and then the stuff you've had to write since the first album goes on your second album, which is why people's second albums aren't as good. They don't have as much time to write them. S. M. Well, I don't know what the word 'play' was supposed to mean in the original post, but when I say 'play', I mean he PLAYED both trumpets at once. He put both intstruments to his mouth, and played different notes on each one. I saw it, I was there, I saw it all, and from what I remember, it sounded really good...the audience was amazed. I knew it was some record or something:-) Thanks for digging this out. Gee, it's kind of a thrill to discuss TMBG music again. I hope it starts a trend... m@t ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Aug 1996 00:49:58 -0400 (EDT) From: "Mike Rose, guaranteed" Subject: Re: Devil Went Down Single On Sat, 10 Aug 1996, Justin W. When the subject was first broached, the issue was ability to play instruments *well* (i.e., with some degree of proficiency), not simply to produce tones on them. Consider that the ability to play "Chopsticks" does not make one a pianist. It means that there's a simple sequence of notes you can play *on* the piano, but it's not quite the same thing as *playing* the piano (if you get my distinction). I believe it was asked (more or less) whether Flansburgh could "get by" playing any instrument other than guitar - meaning, could he play something else as competently as he plays guitar or as Linnell plays various keyboards and woodwinds? The answer still seems to me to be no. Flans's two-trumpet thing is a neat gimmick, but it doesn't necessarily require any real trumpet-playing ability. Maynard Ferguson he's not:-) m@t ------------------------------ End of tmbg-list Digest #2-224 ******************************
