Message-ID: Ben or Been here. I realize Kenyon was already like four days ago, but I had an experience that others might want to hear and share in the excitement. I took my *CAMCORDER* and my *CAMERA* and I'm now a wealthy TMBG fan. "Istanbul" began. On the critic intro, when Flans announces the band with "THEY - MIGHT - BE - GIANTS!!!" I started filming from the FRONT ROW DEAD CENTER on "MIGHT." I started filming, though, with my battery light flashing, and had no way to charge it. So I was doing a desperate video scramble to record as much TMBG as I could before the battery died. I remarkably got all of "Istanbul," with close-ups and Linnell looking into the camera. I'm impressed. But, at the end of the song when Linnell made the opening address, a security guard asked me firmly to turn it off. He then either followed with saying "If I see it again, I'll take it" or "I'll break it"--I think he said "break," but my surrounding friends heard him say "take." Oh well--I have EXCLUSIVE footage that no one else has. But I had my camera to photograph. I felt nervous about taking pictures--Was the security guard going to approach me again?--even more nervous when my girlfriend Lisa told me that he *would* approach me. I took pictures from FRONT ROW DEAD CENTER, getting action shots of Linnell on accordian, Eric on bass, Linnell on keyboard, Flans on mic, the drummer on glockenspiel, group shots, accidental shots of the fence in front of me, etc. I even got a shot of the confetti cannon and a beautiful shot of Linnell's accordian. You *should* feel jealous. My group of four--Me, Lisa, Bill, and Geoff--befriended Wes the Kenyon Student Security Guard, and asked if he could hook us up with setlists after the show. Sure enough, he did!!! I got one, then Geoff got one. Then, as another one was handed out, Lisa with her long arms grabbed it and O SO AWESOMELY gave it to Bill. That makes three of our party of four with setlists--an unbelievable feat. I tried hard to get Linnell's cup of coffee. Sick. Of the four TMBG concerts I've seen (all previous shows at the Newport, Columbus, OH), this was the weakest one. It was short, and frisbees were flying up as potential threats. The beginning IN MY OPINION was lacking a bit in energy, but that's probably because it was the obligatory playing and getting-outta-the-way of "Istanbul." And "New York City" was a slow start to the show too. I might not have experienced it fully because I was trying to film and to photograph, which distracted me from the joy of listening and watching. Oh yeah, Flans didn't jump around and twirl as much, which gives me the impression that he wasn't really into it. One last note: They played "Pet Name." That wasn't one I was expecting in the concert. But I'm sure glad I heard it live. There was something about seeing Flans take off the guitar and get intimate with the mic that made me listen more closely to the song. I now LOVE IT, and have today put that track on repeat. For all you "Pet Name"-haters: Listen to the lyrics! If you saw me, send me a note! If I saw you and don't know it, send me a note!
