School had let out for the day and as I walked outside I noticed that the parking lot was much larger than it really is. I was plodding along when a large green station wagon (50s style, I guess) pulled up next to me. Flansburgh was in the driver's seat. He told to climb in, and I did. We drove around and Flansy told that if I see any friends to shout because he wanted to overload the car. I saw my friend Jinx, a TMBG fan, and shouted to him out the window to him. He just stared at me in disbelief. I wanted to turn around to find my major TMBG fan Paul (you may know him as NICU on IRC) so Flans drove a little bit when he hit a bump and a workman told to him to pull back. Then I woke up. Okay, I guess I didn't have a lot to say. I actually had more, but I forget it. Oh well, maybe another time. I hope I didn't bore anyone. -Ben FFrom postmaster@smtp.shimadzu.com Tue May 6 22:45:49 1997 Return-Path: postmaster@smtp.shimadzu.com Received: from abs.net (root@u1.abs.net [207.114.0.130]) by ussodyssey.ufp.org (8.8.5/8.7.ufp) with ESMTP id WAA05561 for ; Tue, 6 May 1997 22:45:46 -0400 Received: from smtp.shimadzu.com (smtp.shimadzu.com [207.114.21.11]) by abs.net (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id WAA11548 for ; Tue, 6 May 1997 22:45:47 -0400 (EDT) Received: from MIS2/SpoolDir by smtp.shimadzu.com (Mercury 1.31); 6 May 97 22:48:42 EST Received: from SpoolDir by MIS2 (Mercury 1.31); 6 May 97 22:48:28 EST From: Mail Delivery System To: owner-tmbg-list@ussodyssey.ufp.org Date: Tue, 6 May 97 22:48:28 EST Subject: Delivery failure notification Message-ID: <6923C843CD0@smtp.shimadzu.com> With reference to your message with the subject: "Re: TMBG: clarinet cowtown" One or more addresses in your message have failed with the following responses from the mail transport system: User not known at this site. First: I, too, have now recieved the studio versions of the mini-tour songs. (Hallelujah!) Comments (these are comparing the studio versions to the live ones, not taking the songs on their own merit...) On The Drag: Nice. The little additional keyboard figure is nice, and the backup is driving and energetic. A bit crunchier, actually. Counterfeit Faker: Um. Interesting, actually. I can understand the lyrics now. Fit for a B-side, perhaps, but a bit too wispy and "odd" to fit right on the album. Certain People I Could Name: Aaaaaaaaaaaah. This is what I was looking for. Excellent musical delivery of this way-cool song. The keyboard riff is a little more subtle here, and the extra instruments flesh it out a little. This'll be a centerpoint of the album. Reprehensible: Double um. I miss the smooth, more "jazzy" feel of the live version (replaced here by a "big band" sound and a rather grating Flans vocal.) This is the worst of these seven in terms of adaption. Older: Sounds just like I expected, albeit not as loud. Pretty good. They Got Lost: Again, just like I expected, that is, pretty good. Rat Patrol: Hmmm. The... intriguing vocal delivery threw me at first (I was expecting the straightforward vocal treatment it got live) but I'm growing to like it. I think this was probably left off FS because it's too similar to S-E-X-X-Y in that in this form it's really another 70's pastiche. So there you go. >I was shocked by how much better some of the original versions are >than the versions that actually made it onto the albums. First of >all, You'll Miss Me. YES! Both versions accomplish what they're going for, but the demo does so much better... on the Misc T version, it's like he's covering up his weakness and fear with bravado; thus, the loud music, blatty horns, and shouted vocals. With the demo, the real (to use Flans' word) mean-ness of the song shines through, until the end, when his carefully obscured admission shatters his facade. >END OF THE TOUR Yeah, good ender. I'm a sap for good "love is hopeless" songs. We had a great discussion on the meanings of this about a year ago, that I think is up on tmbg.org... On other subjects: Sigh, I want more Pink-Lincoln style lyrics on the next album. What TMBG are doing now, lyrically, is still pretty good (reference "Pet Name," "Spiralling Shape," "Your Own Worst Enemy," or "Certain People I Could Name") but I want more of the brilliantly written amalgam-style lyrics of yesteryear. So poigniant, so real...my favourite line is "John, I've been bad and they're coming after me, done someone wrong and I fear that it was me..." In fact, next to "Evil Twin," (The Song in my book), it's my favourite. The end of Flood has some of the best songs, in my opinion. I often feel with this album that people tend to listen to the first half and then disregard the rest...or maybe not, but "Sapphire Bullets", "Road Movie," "Hearing Aid" (seems no one likes _that_ song either...) and "Letter Box," which is just so darned fun to sing, tend to come out as people's least favourite songs. I meant "scrappy, low-tech" relatively speaking. Naturally, being the first album, it does not have the refinement in sound quality and instrumentation as the later albums. This does NOT mean the album is inferior. It is this exact "scrappiness" that makes the First album so endearing: honest, fresh, no frills. In terms of musical progression, there obviously is one, mainly because it can't be helped. Lincoln gave TMBG the chance to use more instruments, and Their writing now has even more experience behind it. Nothing against the Pink album: it was the snowball that started it all, introducing us to a very original and welcome musical talent. ========================___________________________________________... . . . | from LVJeff | "If you hear only one song this year, | Protected by Guan Yu | | alecson@ucla.edu | there's something terribly wrong with you." ======================== - Kitty Carlisle, Easy Writers ------------------------------ From: Callag@NORTHRYDE.VODAFONE.vodafone.telememo.au Date: 07 May 1997 21:43:20 +1000 Message-ID: <000DA0D3.MAI*/S=Callag/O=VODAFONE/OU=NORTHRYDE/PRMD=vodafone/ADMD=telememo/C=au@MHS> Subject: TMBG: Radio Happiness I had a great time driving to work today listening to the radio. I, personally, think Someone Keeps Moving my Chair is possibly the best song on Flood, maybe tied with We Want a Rock. I'm a bit confused. You say that _Maine_ was a TMBG song before it was a solo Linnell song, how do you know this? Is it merely the fact that it was put on DAS a long time ago or did they actually come out and say that it was a TMBG song, or was it actually played in concert by TMBG originally? I don't think the 3rd option is true. And I don't remember Them ever saying that it was a TMBG song. Being on DAS does not necesaraily mean that Flans had anything to do with it. Just like the Monopuff songs, just because they are on DAS does not mean that Linnell had anything to do with their songs, even if Monopuff didn't really exist at the time (which at the time would mean that it was merely a Flans side project, sorta like Hello the Band). /Matt -- "No room for big hearts like her in this city"-Carlito's Way Member of the ARM since '96 (let's give 'em hell) * ------------------------------------------------------------------- Matt James polk@tmbg.org Matt.James.K.Polk@tmbg.org mjames@envy.loyola.edu Loyola College, Baltimore, Maryland, United States of America "Cracking toast, Gromit!" Anyway, a few months ago I was helping my band director set up for an upcoming jazz concert in another building during my study hall. As we were driving back to the school afterwards, we got into a discussion of what music we listen to, and I mentioned TMBG. He said he likes them and a few years back a student taped him a few songs from Flood! So, being the missionary that I am, the next day I brought him a tape with a medley of 20 or so of my favorite songs. He seemed pretty happy about it. I gave it to him on a Friday so he listened to it over the weekend. So, there I was, bright and early on Monday morning in jazz rehearsal, tired as hell and fighting to stay awake. My band director then stops the band, turns to me, and shouts at the top of his lungs "MINIMUM WAGE!!!!!!" Lets just say I was laughing my ass off for the rest of rehearsal and everyone else thought he and I were out of our minds! On another note, I personally LOVE Saphire Bullets. Especially the bridge. The chords are wonderful. I also think You'll Miss Me is great. Especially the middle part with just John + John and the bass. Then it explodes and is all angry again, I just love it. And if you haven't had enough of my opinions yet, I also love Dig My Grave. It may not be one of the most lyrical or thoughtful songs, but it is pure energy. It is also, may I mention, the song that got me started on Them. That song made me give Them a second chance, and praise the lord! And how dare you, Stomp Box rules! Like Dig My Grave, it is so full of energy, especially when the trumpet builds up to the last KILL KILL KILL KILL KILL ME NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Someday I must hear that song in concert and watch Linnell scream his guts out! He would put two lungs and a kidney into it! -Evan R. Stompbox is one of my TMBG absolute favorite songs... because it's loud, because it's not like the rest of their stuff, because it's on John Henry, which I adore, because it's before another of my fav songs. (End of the Tour) I also enjoy yelling out "Kill, kill kill kill kill me now, FREE the demon with it's cealess screaming, and the stompbox tearing from my heart! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" at random moments. Sorta like the big whistle in Nightgown of the Sullen Moon. Dig my grave could go either way. I have a wierd relationship (compared to other TMBG albums) with Apollo 18 because I owned 2 years before hearing any other albums (Flood) and 4 years before getting all the others.
