They are totally awesome. Try Polkas for a Gloomy World or Polkatharsis. The pogues have some really cool accordion stuff. I will definitely be making the trip there from Tulsa... I bought my ticket yesterday and am in the process of assembling a They Might Be Task Force to caravan that direction. Anyway, if you want tickets for the show, you can call MetroTix at 314-534-1111. You hafta order with a credit card, and the tix come out to 14.50 with the service charge included. You can also buy tix at the door the night of the show for $15 (but i bought mine in advance because i wanna make sure i get one) The show is at a club called Mississippi Nights. It is in a nice touristy kinda district called Laclede's Landing (if any of you have the latest info club release you will recognize this locale). My friend from st. Louis tells me that the club is VERY small and intimate, and that the show will definitely rule there. She has seen them there twice already, so I'm inclined to believe her.... Anyway, doors open at 7:30 (central!) and the show starts at 8:30. Lincoln is the opening band. Ahh, the club says there is parking next to the club, so that shouldn't be a problem. Anyway, thats all the info i can think of.. please lemme know if you're going, so I can hook up with you or something once we get there! Some of the people there are cool, but some are jerks. Two experiences make me not like them. I was taping the first show in early January there. I got my recorder in the door, but after about 7-8 songs, security came and got me. They took me to the owner, who said he hates people who do that kind of thing, and he said I was going to make concerts worse for everybody. I said that TMBG doesn't really care that it happens, he didn't belive me, took the tape out of my recorder and smashed it, and kicked me out. It wasn't fun, but it was an experience... The other problem was at trying to get the picture of the Johns in the display case after the second show. We got a different line from everybody that worked there, after someone of relative importance saying that we probably could. They can just admit they don't know what the hell they are doing. Also, on the first night when I picked up my tickets for the two nights, they gave me two for the same night, and almost wouldn't let me in the second night. But they did. Also, the club isn't that small. It probably can fit 1000 standing room, and there is more room for people to drink. I can think of many other places where I'd rather see TMBG that MS Nights, but any TMBG show is a good one for the most part. (technically speaking) Snail Dust, Shoehorn With Teeth, We Want a Rock. snail dust is a remix... so... Shoehorn and Rock are legit, though... they *refer* to the title, but don't say it. now the question is how many songs do they have where the title shows up in the first "part" of the song. (i.e. if the song starts with a refrain, is it in there, or if it starts with a verse, is it in there?) I think there's more where it *doesn't*, so we should try to find those where it does... or even better, songs that *start* with the title... or, on the subject of "She's an Angel," songs where the title is cleverly buried in the middle of the song somewhere, and not "displayed prominently." things like "Hearing Aid" and "Number 3." I have dutifully been waiting by the mailbox for the past several weeks, but I have still only gotten about 30 of the 150 shirt payments due to me. The people who have not yet sent in their money are holding up the entire process, because as I have said, I need 50% of the total amount to begin printing. We are still about $200 off that goal. The suggestion has been made to me that the reason people are not sending their OMLT checks to me as fast as I'd like is that they are afraid this is a scam. Evidently, some listees are waiting it out to see if anyone else ever gets their shirts in the mail, so they know they really exist. Then, I guess, they would send me their money. How can I possibly reassure you that I am really just a high school kid spending a lot of time and effort trying to do something nice for a hoard of people I have never even met? How can you tell this is not a scam? Let me first state that, if I were really trying to get your dough, I would have asked for *a lot* more money than I did! Why would I waste so much time preparing such an elaborate scheme to rip off only $1200? OK, so that might sound like a lot, but there are much easier ways of making $1200 illegally, and most of them don't involve six months of planning or giving out your name and home address to 500 or more strangers. I certainly understand that you might feel cautious about sending money to a stranger. But I can only assure you that when I give out my address and take on the resposibility of handling other people's money, the legal and security risks I run, however improbable they may be, are much greater than the risk you take when you drop a couple bucks in the mailbox. Please. Let's all be friends. Oh, and by the way: please, DO NOT send me your sob stories and excuses and your promises to send the check next week. Just send the money when you have it. Of course, I refuse to believe that all 120 of you latecomers can't spare 12 bucks, but some of you can't. Yes, the Kabalas rule! Their new CD, "The Eye of Zohar" is my favorite CD that came out so far this year. Their instrumentation is not 1 but 2 accordions, sax, and drums. If you're looking for good music with accordion, I suggest checking out a modern klezmer band called the Klezmatics that is led by Frank London (who was in TMBG's trumpet player for awhile). I also suggest checking out stuff by the great zydeco accordionist Boozoo Chavis. I saw My Superhero (a poppy ska band w/ accordion) mentioned here a couple times recently. They're on a new compilation CD called Hey Brother 2 that I'm selling for $5 (postage included.) My band, Joe & The Chicken Heads, also has a track on it. Email if you want more info on it.
