I found this only slightly odd at first, seeing as how zithers are mostly unknown. Then, he dropped it and it made a sound that almost but not quite sounded entirely like an electric zither. The point: Mark Marek is a fan of They Might Be Giants, so he said "John Linnell, from They Might Be Giants, is a fan of Brian Dewan, who plays an electric zither, so I'll put in a sound of Brian Dewan playing a zither", which sounded like a good idea. Their song are about, ah, y'know, relationships and feelin' happy and feelin' bad and death and New York City and stupid parents and bobsleds on fire and lesbian sex and chinchillas and crocodiles. (Not necessarily all at once, mind you.) Before they broke up this summer :P , they recorded three albums (Betti-Cola, Box of Hair, and Come Out Come Out), and one b-side/"oddities" collection called Mauler. Females, and males who are secure enough in their masculinity to listen to girly music :), can start with COCO. All you other fellas can get Mauler and Box of Hair, which are more punky than girly. I think they are actually more consistent than COCO. As for Betti-Cola, I can't comment... every time I try to special-order it, something bad happens and it never comes in. If nothing else, buy Mauler or COCO because one of the songs on them contains the chorus "ooh la la ooee cha cha ooh la la cha cha cha." And they sing it so convincingly, you find yourself singing along and thinking, "By God, yes! Ooee cha cha! I understand!" If really nothing else, you can buy Mauler and get a nice picture of them in their underwear. >I believe they played She's An Angel at the Then show in Boston last >spring. People liked Lincoln, Cub, Gravel Pit to some extent, Frank Black, Soul Coughing, Brian Dewan, You Were Spiralling, Young Fresh Fellows, and pretty much all the bands that toured with TMBG for a legnth of time. I am not sure of the full meaning of this. Some people would like them if they heard them on the radio. Some people are just really excited to see TMBG after however long they have been waiting and if it was just roadies making noises into microphones would cheer wildly (which happens). I like TMBG for many reasons. I like their music, I like their lyrics, I like their stage show, and their banter. I find TMBG inventive, and just generally fun to see. I don't see that with a lot of opening bands. I don't care for Lincoln, yet I pretty much know the words to their songs without owning their CD. Their most rockin' song, in my opinion, is Steppin' Stone, which is a cover and usually is not a good sign for your band. Tough to say. I bought it unheard, and I flat-out loved it!!!! See if you can find it used, or see if you can buy the store's promo copy. I did that with "Unsupervised" and got it for only $5. :) TTYL, -Adam /----=========================================================----\ http://www.awod.com/gallery/rwav/ctyner/ The home of He-Man, "Weird Al", Yoo-Hoo, Killer Tomatoes, and more! ctyner@awod.com O- MiSTie #67,326 ------------------------------ Subject: TMBG: I'm Back! After like a 3 or 4 month hiatus due to excessive e-mail and general stress out, I'm finally back on TMBG list! I've been on EFnet #tmbg semi-regularly for the past few months, and any of you who haven't tried it should check it out. It is a TON of fun! Oh, and we must not forget Pere Ubu. Pere Ubu, a Cleveland band (now defunct, as far as I can tell), opened for TMBG for the mini-tour of the midwest that happened after the Why Does the Sun Shine? single came out. Pere Ubu rocked my little world...but while I know that Tony Maimone has played bass for Pere Ubu (not to mention Bob Mould, but that's a different story), I can't remember if he was at that show. Oh well, little bits of uselessness from little ol' me. See ya.
