(dallas and houston shows!) well, i'm finally home for a bit from the texas tmbg extravaganza... after saturday night in dallas and sunday night in houston... now i get a bit of school and rest before jaunting off to san antonio for tonight's show. and so... tmbg's first return to texas in three years has been INcREdIBLE so far... the show saturday night at trees started everything off... i got to the club around 9, when doors were supposed to open, but trees is really bad about that, so of course they didn't open for another probably 45 minutes. the line outside was absurd, it wrapped entirely around a parking lot, then spiralled in on itself, but fortunately they decided that there should be another line right around when we got there, so i got to get pretty close to the front. outside i met the denominator, clad in a bright orange tmbg shirt, and he was super cool... we got in and procured a slew of new t-shirts... i got the HUGE std tour shirt with the accordion and flans' custom guitar on the front of it, which is super cool... anyway, i found my friend mandy there, who works for the local alternastation in dallas, and by a stroke of fate it turned out that the guy with the station who was supposed to interview Them earlier in the day developed strep throat at the last minute, so she got to meet Linnell, didn't get to interview them yet due to time constraints, but they're going to call for an interview at a later time... so anyway... lincoln was good, i had never heard them before, but i liked their sound... more so at the houston show i think though... after about 3 songs in dallas i got impatient and wanted tmbg to be on RIGHT NOW. but they didn't play for very long, so that was cool... and then for the main event... tmbg got set up, which included sound checks on everything on stage, including stick... and eventually they came out, started with NYC, then birdhouse, then linnell told us about the texas revolution, and being as texas was such a place, they decided to bring artillery along with them, so the cannon was presented, and JKP played... after that i kind of lost track of the set.. i didnt' get a list, but mandy did, so possibly i can get a copy of it at some point... all in all it was a very good show, the crowd was good, though up at the front got to be quite a press of people... after the show ended i was amused by the glockenspiel (sp?) which was on the side of the stage, complete with tape w/ arrows on it pointing to the correct note to play... before playing WDTSS? they talked about how for the next song they were going to reverse their roles, and that flans would do the talking part and linnell the singing, which he did a good job of, but flans is not so great at the spoken part just yet... gases on the sun included hydrogen and wood, the earth was 96 million miles away, and the heat and light of the sun are caused by the nuclear reaction between... "rogaine... that's it." particle man featured the sign, and the last verse was all particle man vs. particle man... all in all a great show. and to cap it off, at the end i was given a signed then: flat compliemets of 94.5 the edge...!!!!! to be followed the next night by an even better show. i wasn't sure what to expect as i've never seen them twice in a row before, but i figured that they would play the same or at least a very similar set... but instead they played different stuff... some of the same, but probably 7 or 8 songs that they didn't play the night before. flans did a much better job on WDTSS? this time... they played Spiraling shape, spider, and i can't remember anymore.. oh well... it was a Very good show, highlighted by the fact that my girlfriend and i were at the very front next to the stage for the majority of the show. i remembered to bring in my camera as opposed to at the dallas show, and i got a lot of pictures, which i will surely have on a web page sometime this week... first i want to try and get to meet one or both of them after a show Hopefully and get a pic of that... i left not too long after the show ended but i did get one of flans' guitar picks, not a custom one, but still very cool. two friends of mine each got a pair of drum sticks, and another a set list, so we cleaned up there i guess... Mitch, who's on the list here, stayed about an hour and a half after the end of the show and right as he was going to leave flans walked out and he got an autograph and talked to him for a bit, which hopefully will happen again tonight at the san antonio show... and now i think i am due for a bit of sleep. i had to get up at 5:30 this morning to drive home from houston to go to class, so i've gotten about 7 hours of sleep in the past 3 days... and that combined with the 7+ hours of driving is doing me great... and so... if anyone is going to be at either the san antonio show or at the austin show tomorrow you should find me and say hi... i think tonight i'm going to wear the big head shirt, and i'll be with a guy with a long ponytail... and so... rabidchild (.paul swan) ------------------------------ Message-ID: <3467491B.C018A476@nmt.edu> Date: Mon, 10 Nov 1997 10:49:15 -0700 From: Nick Wolf Subject: TMBG: mp3's I am sure this question has been answered about a thousand times or so already but...I just got some mp3's that sound like they were recorded inside a fishtank...what can I do to fix them? Everyone in the band models something (though it seems that Hal manages to get into every other shot-what a ham ). And yes, true believers, you are able to purchase INDIVIUALLY either of John Linnel's wonderful EP's. Something I noticed- anyone who has the Tire Damage t-shirt, check the Dial A Song number. The ones from September (hatch shell in particular) have an incorrect number, but the ones in the catalog are back to the familiar 387-6962. Am I the only geek who noticed this? They try. Try to picture it from their point of view...you've just been on a bus for who knows how many hours. After such a wonderful journey, you set up your crud for a show, do a soundcheck and wander around the city, town or dirt pile you happen to be located in for the next few hours trying to take in some local color. Or you've been booked to do some radio stint, which may or may not require performance. Then, you head back to the club with the same people you've been staring at for an eternity (and you *know* the lighting guy snores, who's he trying to kid?) and you wait in the back with your coffee (or whatever). You perform. You do an encore. Maybe, just maybe, you do another. Then it's time to pack everything up and gather the snoring lighting crew and go back on the road. You're tired, you're cranky. Maybe you smell. Anyway, given the option of taking a loooong bath in the hotel or going through piles upon piles upon piles of mail, which would you take? They try to respond, but you've got to keep in mind exactly what it is that TMBG do (perform and record, both of which take up tons of time) and let's face it- there are way too many TMBG fans for John and John to sit down and personally thank. It would end up kind of like that Steve Martin bit: I'd like to thank each and every one of you. Thank you, thank you, thank you.....you get the idea. They're still a pretty accessable band, I think. There's a nice medium in between the audience and the band that really makes their concerts feel as if you were there to see your friend make it in music than seeing "THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS" the big bad rock band.
