It breaks the heart. :( > Not Rockapella at all, actually. Sean Altman left the group last spring to go solo, and has since put out his first solo album, seanDEMOnium. Check out his web page at http://www.bigsean.com for info on the album and his new career! Sean will be one of the musicians backing up Flansburgh. In fact, he's also doing the a cappella arrangement of Flansburgh's song, "Careless Santa." (Incidentally, Rockapella is in California this weekend. They're performing at the Troubadour in LA -- Saturday 12/06, I believe.) And to Sara Grady : I agree with Chad. Go to the Moxy Fruvous gig and don't worry about being a newbie. Believe me, no one will look down on you; we were all first-timers once! You'll be grooving with the crowd from the first note, even if you don't know a single song in advance, and you won't have time to be nervous. See you there, perhaps! Can you tell >me anything to put me at ease? Allow me to begin by declaring you to be extremely lucky. I'm stuck out here in CA. :( You'll want to look for the Fruheads. Many Fruheads hang out on alt.music.moxy-fruvous; many are TMBG fans and all are extremely nice. Look for little white buttons that have a cartoon dog in the middle (his name is Barry) and the words "alt.music.moxy-fruvous/Have modem, will travel". Or look for people with signed Fruhead shirts. Or look for people doing an elaborate hand-clapping dance (called the "hand jive") during Johnny Saucep'n. Give everyone a big hug for me, will you? (Damn, I miss the Fruheads... :( Make sure you get a chance to talk to the band; that's half the fun! Fruvous likes to talk to their fans and nearly always hang out after a show, usually by the merch table. Ask the man running the merch table for your Fruhead card. He'll stamp it; after three stamps you get a pin, six gets you a shirt, etc. Basically, don't sweat it! --nicole the wonder nerd *** "Candy taste with every breath I take, exhaling icy mists of crystal in my wake; but the peppermint tingle I'm feeling in my soul is the candycane swirl of a world out of control..." --The House Jacks ("Saturnalia Smile") Visit Nicolopolis! http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn Public PGP key at http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn/key.html ncarlson@mail.arc.nasa.gov nmcarlson@ucdavis.edu ana.ng@tmbg.org ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Dec 1997 03:09:23 -0500 (EST) From: The Demonic Kangaroo Subject: TMBG: My Lincoln page. I got to the Met Cafe at 6:30 for 8:00 doors, 9:45 performance, as is my standard timing. Nothing seem to be going on except for a bartender stocking the bar. I walk in(the doors were all unlocked) and ask the sound guy if Moxy Fruvous is indeed playing, because one of the posters outside said Dec 5th, not Dec 6th. He smiled and said yes. I walk across the room and sit down in a corner near the T-shirts. I just observe, and then a blad guy and a woman walk in and put down cases that say "Hamill on Trial" (the opening band). The guy walks over, and I stand up and shake his hand. "You live around here?", he says. I say, "Well, I kinda do, I mean, I go to school here, but this neighborhood is not too familiar. You'd be better off asking the bartender or something." So he does, and leaves. I keep sitting there, and watch the sound guy test all the amps and cancel out certain frequencies that were in the feedback and all this typical sound guy stuff. Then Moxy Fruvous walks through the door. I smile and say HI. They smile, wave, and start wandering around. They start wrestling, giving each other piggy backs, and generally fooling around. Jian is standing near me, and I say, "Hi...um, I have to admit this is my first show...I am kind of a neophyte" He shakes my hand and says "I hope you like us." I grin and say that from what I've heard I think I certainly will. He says "So, how new are you..." "Very new!" I say. "I was referred to you because I am a TMBG and BNL fan" He nods and says "Oh, we are much better that those sh*t bands." The others look over and say "What? Who?" "He says "She says that she is a TMBg fan...and that's how she knows about us." They all nod knowingly. "So, why are you in here for sound check?" Jian asks. "No one kicked me out!" I say. He says, "Cool. You must look important or something." Then they all got up on stage and played. The whole time I sat there and thought, "Sh*t I wish I had gotten into them earlier, then I could appreciate this more. I felt almost bad, like I was getting some sort of special thing that I didn't deserve. So, then this guy came over (I don't know who he was exactly) at about 7:40, after I had been listening for who knows how long, and says, "I'm sorry. The band manager doesn't like people listening to sound check. Some bands are just that way. Sorry." I kind of laughed and said OK, with a sort of "someone in this room is really slow" look on my face. The I went outside, and latched on to some Fruheads, one of whom turned out to be some sort of Fruvous mini-celebrity, because everyone seemed to know her. I talked to all the people with bird buttons (Chad, I conveyed your message and got a message to give to you, but I forget who it was from...they said they talk to you all the time anyway.)Everyone thought I was so adorable and Fru-virginal...it was odd. The show was great!!!!! They are so amusing and talented! I bought Wood and the B-sides album, and a T-shirt that says "your new boyfriend". I can't post a setlist because I hardly knew the names of the songs, but they played (I am probably making up titles!)The Kids Song, BJ, Nuits, Raja...(arrgh, wish I could recall more...it will probably come to me tonight as I fall asleep). As far as covers, they played Love Potion #9 with a mix of things(Staying Alive, Tubthumping, Barbie Girl, Who Will Save Your Soul...)and Psycho Killer. They also played the Green Eggs and Ham thing, which I had read about on the website in the small amount of time I had to get moderately aquainted with the material. To finish the evening, I got a ride home from "Joby and Gordon". All, in all, it was great. Sorry this is so long.
