Perhaps the general public believes that Linnell is the singer for TMBG and thus the record companies try to use singles only when Linnell is the main singer? They might recognize Linnell as the "singer" for TMBG and might not readily know that it is TMBG based on Flans' singing. I think the appeal of his songs is the desire of people to understand them. Flans' lyrics are often more absolute and straightforward (now, anyway)... look at How Can I Sing Like a Girl, Pet Name, and XTC vs. Adam Ant... compare these to Spiraling Shape, The Bells are Ringing, and Finished with Lies. I loaned someone John Henry a couple of months ago, and before they even listened to it, I heard comments about the lyrics... "Wow, End of the Tour is so cool... and No One Knows My Plan... and Snail Shell." of course, some time long ago, Flans wrote more unusual stuff... like Absolutely Bill's Mood, and The World's Address (although I'm not convinced that one was actually written by Flans - sounds more Linnell-like to me...) Note - I'm not saying that Flans' songs are bad, just different. (but I do think that First Kiss is his best since Sleeping in the Flowers) ------------------------------ From: mr.train@juno.com Date: Mon, 22 Dec 1997 18:15:58 -0500 Subject: Re: TMBG: O tannenbaum EP Message-ID: <19971222.181837.5054.1.Mr.Train@juno.com> Hey! This quarter I chose to do a project on James K. Polk (the time period coincided with his life and his administration) and his acquistition of huge tracts of land all over North America. Well, I handed in my outline last Monday and today we got them back. I got a 40 out of 40!!!!! Thank God TMBG got me into this president or else I would not have known very much about him at all. Also, my brother is in college, and when he saw me doing research and blabbering on and on about how cool James K. is and what the Unisted States would be like if he hadn't gotten all this land... well he decided he'd do a report on him too!
