Graham Maby - Wow, I am surprised no one has jumped on this yet. He is best known for his work with Joe Jackson (who attended the 2/21 IP show). Graham has been loyally playing with JJ since 1978 or so. He performed one of my all favorite "bass" songs -"I'm the Man" (the title track from JJ's second album). I highly recommend you check out this and JJ's other work. Pay particular attention to Graham's bass playing. It is probably best to start with "Look Sharp" and proceed chronologically through his career. JJ (and Graham) are incredibly talented. They helped start the "new wave" era and have gone through a multitude of musical genres since then. Erik J. I was just being nice and keeping that little thought to myself and not posting it. Now it's time to talk about Conan!!!!!! I screwed up, and didn't tape it one night, but I saw the preview. Conan was making out with some lady. Who was that? Why right there? I'm going nuts! I also saw Howard Stern standing up and the table was flipped over. Andy poured water on it. What was that all about? Does anyone recall the lyrics to the lullaby Conan was singing the other day? The one for parents who were up late trying to get their babies to sleep. It ended with Conan telling them to go have sex. One of my friends saw a picture of him I have that I've been meaning to give to someone forever. Generally their lyrics are quite depressing, but the musicis so cheerful it just is definitely a good thing to have playing if you need to be cheered up. And this is what I absolutely LOVE about this band. Think about virtually any of your favorite lyrics: "No one in the world ever gets what they want and that is beautiful/ everybody dies frustrated and sad and that is beautiful" or "If it wasn't for disappointment, I wouldn't have any appointment." Their lyrics are clever but, when not plain nonsense, so very sad! And yet the music is so energetic and, well, happy. It's this paradox, the contrast between mood and meaning, that really interests me. This could be a term paper. But I've found songs like "Why Must I Be Sad?" and "A Self Called Nowhere" have the effect of mellowing me out a bit when I'm violently angry or sad. And when I was throwing a minor tantrum when mom wouldn't let me go see TMBG at Calvin, I played Lincoln at full blast. It made me feel better in a petty sort of way, as I knew it had to be bugging the 'rents pretty badly. :) I also wrote "If it wasn't for disappointments, I wouldn't have any appointments" several times on a sheet of paper and hung it on my door. I think mom got the message.... To pass the time in between rounds and while waiting for the awards ceremony, we've invented several games. One enjoyable one is Impromptu Poetry, where a person is given an object and must invent a poem about it on the spot. Another is Impromptu Song Lyrics. In this catagory, a person must dramatically recite song lyrics. Ever heard anyone do a dramatic recitation of "De Do Do Do" by the Police? :) Anyway, one day Kristen points at me and yells, "Kirsten! Impromptu They Might Be Giants lyrics!" I immediately responded with: "No one in the world ever gets what they want, and that is beautiful. Everybody dies frustrated and sad, and that is beautiful." By this time several people from different schools had stopped to listen soberly. (forensics people are so willing to accept things; I love it. only at forensics is it considered okay to talk to the wall) I continued with: "They want what they're not, and I wish they would stop Saying deputydogdogadingdangdeppadeppadeputydogdogadingdangdeppadeppa." At this, everyone laughed. And that, my friends, is the essence of TMBG. And perhaps, of life itself. [clip] I'm going to have to agree with Kirsten on this one. When I'm depressed/down/sad/angry, I just don't feel like putting TMBG on. Maybe I just wallow in self-pity (actually, I know I do...), but I always put on the Cure or Joy Division or Moby (the current depression music of choice in my book) when I'm down. Come to think of it, I really don't have much of an idea what mood I'm in when I'm listening to TMBG (stoned? just kidding...). Oh well, fairly pointless post....I'll see y'all later. Oh yeah, the results of the first TMBG list survy have been compiled (finally), and I just need to get them all onto a web page. Hopefully this weekend it'll be done....I'll keep y'all posted. Being the crazy driving guy that I am I offered to bring them back to North Adams MA on Sunday...incredibly out of my way. On the way home Chuck and Andy became violently ill, causing me to stop at least three times to let them vomit (icky). When we got to the dorms, their illness progressed into further states of ickyness, so we decided to take them to the hospital. There, they were drugged up. After about two hours, the doctors told us that they had stabilized and we were to take them back to the dorms and make sure they stayed in bed for the next 24 hours with liquids but no foods. As I helped the drugged Chuck to his bed he mumbled, "music" (at least I think so), so I put Apollo18 on random play and left him. I ended up staying the night there...it being three AM by the time all this had occurred. The next morning, Chuck was feeling better (aside from an incredible hunger), but Andy, who had no TMBG exposure, apparently hadn't gotten much sleep and had just stopped puking around 6 AM... They're both fine now and enjoyed their Tuesday off (by doctors orders).
