(scary thing - I've heard Spider in concert more times than I've heard Don't Let's Start) I've noticed a sort of pattern, or categorization of their live shows.... there are some songs that they play while promoting an album, and then retire.... some songs get played a lot before an album comes out and then get put away.... and others don't show up until later... some examples: album promotion only: Snowball in Hell, I've Got a Match, You'll Miss Me, Hearing Aid, See the Constellation, If I Wasn't Shy, Space Suit, Extra Savoir-Faire, O Do Not Forsake Me (most likely I Can Hear You and Your Own Worst Enemy, eventually) pre-album promotion mostly: I Should Be Allowed to Think, Why Must I Be Sad showed up later: She's an Angel, Which Describes How You're Feeling (briefly), We're the Replacements, Spider, Subliminal (and hopefully The Bells are Ringing) of course, there are a lot of fairly standard songs - The Guitar, Sleeping in the Flowers, NyQuil Driver, etc... ------------------------------ Message-ID: Date: Thu, 27 Mar 1997 08:48:35 -0500 (EST) From: Lawrence P Solomon Subject: TMBG: weird... Frankly, IMHO, They > have retired the wrong songs.... They did not play Particle Man on 6/18/94 at Wolf Trap in VA. They did not play Birdhouse on 10/18/92 at the Variety Arts Theatre in NYC. I don't know of any shows where Istanbul was missing... at least not any time after 1989. (I mean, they didn't play it in 1987...) They used to play She's an Angel at pretty much every show - most of my tapes from 1989-1994 have it. They stopped playing it in mid-1995. Probably got sick of it. I expect it to come back fairly soon, though... it's break will probably be about as long as they retired Shoehorn with Teeth for (1993-1994) They know people like it.... I found it odd that they didn't play Twisting or Snail Shell at Metropol in Pittsburgh this past December... they played Twisting during the sound check, but I think they ran out of time during the show... there are now very few songs I've heard at every show I've been to... let's see: Sun, Birdhouse, Istanbul, Particle, NyQuil, Sleeping, Ana Ng, Guitar... and if you don't count the time I saw them in October, 1994, you can add a lot of the mini-tour/FS songs - Older, Spider, SEXXY, Sing, Polk. Well, someone's already posted that it's Where Your Eyes Don't Go, but I think this points to a bigger (though unimportant) problem. TMBG has lots and lots of songs, and people always use acronyms because they don't want to type the whole song name. But this can be really annoying because I for one (and I'm hoping many others) sometimes sit around puzzling over which song is being discussed. Why not just shorten the titles instead of making acronyms? It's just as easy and far more clear to type Bird than BIYS, or Crane than TNAC. It would take a lot of people quite a while to figure out what TNAC is supposed to be, yet someone out there is surely willing to write it. So who's with me? Down with acronyms! Up with meaningful shortenings! -Dan ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Mar 1997 16:53:08 -0500 From: Whim Message-ID: <333AEC44.23E7@mindless.com> Organization: United Federation of Planets Subject: TMBG: The fabulousness that is home Well, I'm leaving my computer until Monday I look froward to weeding through hundreds of messages then hopefully my parents will give me money when I go home and I'll be able to go get Then Anyways, I thought I'd add to the stolen instruments story: Flans, at the Paradise in Boston, said that somebody stole their equipment as well as "our new guitarist Eric, and we're really pissed too, because we paid top dollar..." and while I'm at it I'll add to the acronyms thing: Maybe we're all just lazy. I checked out right on 10am (Sunday) and walked to another youth hostel. I called Triple J and arranged to meet another DJ who had sent me a tape of an interview he did with Linnell some months earlier. While there I gave him the promised copy of Live in NY, and he gave me a tour of the studio complex. I left him around 1pm and walked the streets of Sydney for a while, then headed back to the hostel for some much needed shut-eye. Woke up at 6pm to the sound of the phone. It was Richard Kingsmill to say that I would be on air in 30seconds (Shit!!!) He made small talk and then went live to air. I was on for around a minute, maybe more, and I actually said "Twin Quasars of Rock" on national radio. after that finished I got ready for the show. Showed up around 730pm and waited patiently at the bar. Met some of the others that I had already met at prevoius shows. The Simpletons came on and were great, and the lead singer recognised me in the front row, and pointed at me and laughed during the second song. I was starting to get sad that this would be the last show. The setlist tonight was different from the other shows: KITTEN INTRO I CAN HR / NO INTRO ISTANBUL REPLACEMENTS METAL / SLEEP BROOM / LOST POLK SPIRAL GIRL WHERE / SEXXY SPY SPIDER / BIRD NO ONE / GTR / ENSOR WORST XTC / EXQ TWIST NYC UNTIL MY HEAD.. DIG -------------------------- PARTICLE ACTUAL PURPLE -------------------------- OLDER PET DRAG The show ended, and I got my setlist. I also got a backstage pass (not to use, just a souvenir). I helped the roadies load the truck and then went backstage and chatted with them. After a while we went back to the van and I decided to leave them be. I shook all the road crew members' hands and thanked them for everything. Even though I would be flying out later that day, my tour was over now. "At the end of the tour when the road disappears if there's anymore people around when the tour runs aground and if you're still around then we'll meet at the end of the tour." I saw Them at the very end of October, right before They started Their own tour. No Statue at the concert (I was somewhat dispointed). On another note, I just got back from Chicago where I picked up "back to Skull", "S-E-X-X-Y," and a little dinky version of "They'll need a crane". I love the Sexxy remix. Mrs. Train whoops batute as well. I know most of you have probably had these for some time now, but given the fact that I live in a little podunk community (Cowtown?) I hope you can excuse me for bringing this up. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Mar 1997 01:08:41 -0500 (EST) From: MIKE Subject: TMBG: NONTMBGish : shirts/douglas adams Message-ID: On Thu, 27 Mar 1997, Amy Greenlese wrote: > Ok, I realized this afternoon that I probably should *not* be walking > around my campus with "They Might Be Giants" plastered across my chest.... > to make matters worse, when I last washed this shirt I dried it too hot > and it shrunk a bit. *Now* I know why people have been staring at > me...*blush* heehee...tight t-shirts are a good thing...*hits self on head* oh, sorry:) > > > Amy :) > cowtown@tmbg.org > Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn > from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent > disinclination to do so. > -- Douglas Adams, _Last Chance to See_ last chance to see?? what is this? dont tell me i've missed a douglas adams book--i've read the 5 books in the trilogy, and the two dirk gently books--so what is this? (really curious) _Last Chance To See_ is a nonfiction book by Douglas Adams and Mark Cardwardine that chronicles their voyages to see extremely endangered animals. It's by turns hilarious and very, very sad. I did part of it for forensics last year, and I still blame the fact that I didn't do too well on the part I left in about hating missionaries. Or maybe it was just that I wasn't really as good as I though. ;) Kirsten -- "To sing, to laugh, to dream, to walk in my own way and be alone, free, with an eye to see things as they are.." - from _Cyrano de Bergerac_ Kirsten Brodbeck kbrodbec@remcen.ehhs.cmich.edu AKA Crow AKA Brodie ------------------------------ End of tmbg-list Digest #3-87 *****************************
