I encountered this problem in a fun class last year > called "orchestration". What you do is double instruments that sound the > same or that are not very powerful (like saxes and F horns, clarinets and > trumpets, baritones and trombones) Well, what I'm saying about all of this (several people have made this observation, so I'm responding to all of you) is that with 13 different instruments to fill and about five different parts to fill (more or less), I understand there will be a lot of doubling. But the fact is that TMBG songs do not dynamically change in terms of texture of instrumentation and everything. Maybe if you're lucky you get a bridge that has a different feel to it, but that's it. In my example of NOKMP, say you gave the horn line in the song (the one started by the solo trumpet) to the trumpets, clarinets, and trombones. Those people would be bored to hell playing a part like that for a while, as would any audience listening to it. Yeah, you could switch it to, say, the sax section and the flutes during a loud section to allow the trumpets to do their thing, but you still have the same little ditty repeated over and over. Most marching band songs (at least the ones that are really successful and exciting...see the Centerville Jazz Band 1992 show for an example :) ...jesus, that was amazing, and not just because I was playing it) have some sort of flow, where every instrument plays a distinctly different part at some point. There's just not enough substance in a TMBG song to make a truly successful marching band show. I'm sorry. But as I said....jazz ensembles....that's the way to go. Okay, see ya. Well, I ended up turning on a half hour early, and I was delighted to find myself watching Space Ghost Coast to Coast, which I belive is one of the funniest shows on television. But anyway, about 5 minutes before planet came on, there was an ad for it, and they did play No One Knows My Plan! I was so pumped, but then i watched the show. I'm quite glad they don't disgrace TMBG with having it on cartoon planet. It's terrible. 2. Then is worth it. I just got Then from one of the local music stores, popped it into my pooter and let it fly through the stereo. Most people say they don't notice the remastering, but I certainly can tell the difference. Its not REALLY obvious, and most of the changes are very subtle, but overall it is more clear than the regular CD's. On some tracks its more obvious than others though. To test my theory I ran both CD's at the same time into the pooters spectrum analyzer and compared waveforms. Of course they were different, but overall the Then waveform was cleaner and more concise than the others. As far as being worth the $25 I paid for it, I must say that I am not at all disappointed with my purchase. Have a nice day! Buster T. Soneone else out there who not only knows of Jellyfish, but also likes them!! wacky-doo!!! I feel so ostracised over here in Australia, 'cos I say their name and the universal respone is always "who?" :) (just a shame they've split up, though...) >--------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- >Also, the bogus XTC story stated that their lawyer was some guy named >Nigel. Violent Femmes - Hallowed Ground On a completely differnet not, though, I've been watching a lot of negative things out there about Then, and think I do have something to say about it. As far as TMBG fans go, we are a bit of an extremist group. Now I don't mean that in a negative way. TMBG are most certainly one of the best things to happen to music in the past 15 years. What I do mean is we (meaning the group of loveable nutcases who subscribe to tmbg.list) really are the "dedicated few" who really follow the band (one look at Royce's recent postings are enough to confirm this theory). There have got to be many times the number of people out there who really do like TMBG but either don't have the internet at home or work (Mr Clinton said he was gonna fix that problem soon... anyone actually believe him? ) or are just people who are interested in the music. This is where Then is going to be a godsend for folks. I have all the albumns (incl. MiscT) but I have a lot of friends who love TMBG but simply haven't been able to get a copy of either the pink albumn, M-T or lincoln. So what is the remastering isn't the best quality? so what if there are some songs that people would have preferred (has anyone ever seen a compilation record that has every song that every fan loves on it?). What really matters is the early stuff is out there, and available, and it's gonna bring a lot of new fans into out ever growing and loving community. And after all, we're all here 'cos we love the music, right? "I'm Def" is a little longer on the Statue single and the demo tape. It says "Can we do that?" and "Why don't you leave a message?" at the end. Speaking of bonus tracks being cut shorter, I like the unexpected cutoff of "I Hope that I Get Old Before I Die" but I don't think "I'm Def" should have been shortened. Does anyone know if any of the other bonus tracks were trimmed down? I think "Mainstream U.S.A" might have been. ------------------------------ From: Callagha@NORTHRYDE.VODAFONE.vodafone.telememo.au Date: 30 Mar 1997 14:24:03 +1000 Message-ID: <000C8A71.MAI*/S=Callagha/O=VODAFONE/OU=NORTHRYDE/PRMD=vodafone/ADMD=telememo/C=au@MHS> Subject: Re: TMBG: Sheet Music >--------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- > >> Does anyone know if TMB Productions is coming out with a sheet music >> collection or something?
