I'm a music minor (I know, I know...but my parents refuse to pay for me to major in music), and I've played baritone/euphonium for about four years now. I've also played valve trombone in jazz ensembles and slide trombone for the hell of it. Anyway... > I have been a freshman for all of three days now! Anywho, does anyone > play baritone horn(concert band) and is in their schools Jazzy band? Is the trombone easier? Is it > hard to play Bass clef(after playing treble?) When I was in high school, I played baritone in the symphonic band and played bass in the two jazz ensembles my school had. I actually had to learn a little bit of bass clef while I was there, but I really didn't have to do much until I came to college. For some reason, a lot of older wind ensemble music (at least the stuff I've played) contains no treble clef baritone/euphonium part. It's actually not THAT hard to learn, just as long as you remember two things: --Obviously, the same note will appear in a completely different place on the staff. No big deal... --Also, you're not just switching from treble clef to bass clef, but you're also switching (in a way) from the key of Bb to the key of C (written...I understand that the actual key of the instrument does not change). So yeah...just keep practicing with bass clef...start with a few notes in a general place (I started with the Bb in the middle of the staff and worked my way up and down from there), and keep extending it, trying to play more and more of a piece in bass clef. If nothing else, it's well worth it (and essentially required) if you want to continue playing those instruments in the future. In terms of whether or not trombone is "easier" for jazz performance, it all depends on how you look at it, and how much time you put in. Coming from a trumpet background, it's safe to assume that Feeny is a lot more comfortable with valves than with a slide (unless he is in the possession of one of those cool slide trumpets...). Also, as someone else mentioned, trombone is much more suited for jazz performance than a baritone/euphonium (which is intended for symphonic work, along with Sousa-type bands...both genres contain the best lines for baritones). Basically, trombones have the following advantages in jazz: --Again, as someone mentioned, the range of tones (not notes) that trombones have make them more suited for jazz. --Trombones can easily use different mutes (straight, cup, and most importantly the plunger mute), whereas mutes for baritones, if you can even find one, are just kind of dumb. And they don't make plungers big enough for use in baritones... --The slide in a trombone has been an integral part of jazz music since the good ol' New Orleans days. No other instrument in common practice in jazz ensembles can achieve quite the same sound (closest thing is the bass, but whatever). --Esthetic (sp?) reasons. A row of four trombones, even if one is a bass trombone, looks a whole lot more uniform and just plain cool than a row of three trombones and a baritone. --Probably the most important reason. With the exception of the bass trombone part, trombone parts for jazz ensembles are (as Feeny mentioned) higher and faster than for symphonic pieces. The baritone is really intended to fill in the space (note-wise) between the trombone and the tuba, in general practice. As such, a baritone playing a high G (in bass clef) is incredibly hard to keep sounding as mellow as it does in the middle of the staff. The trombone is easier to control, and just plain sounds better above the staff than a baritone. So obviously, a trombone is just plain better for jazz performance. Feeny, I will assume that you are not comfortable with slide positions and all that, coming from the aforementioned trumpet background. So, the best solution (probably) is to play a valve trombone while practicing how to use the slide trombone, because, as I said, if you're planning on continuing with jazz performance, slide trombone will be much much more effective and needed than the other instruments. Okay, I think I'm done with this little low brass lesson for the day. Feeny, any questions, feel free to e-mail me privately. Sounds as though we are living parallel lives. One day while some competition was going on she past me a note answering the question (she liked Counting Crows and Soul Asylum... btw, I love Soul Asylum, anyone else?). So... we talked and I made her a tape of music to broaden her horizons which included at least one tmbg song. I'm not even sure what it was. If a film was not given an "R" rating, it was said to be "X" rated, but since that was a made up term... the Official rating was NR or not rated. Some films were "branded" as "X" rated (such as A Clockwork Orange), but in all actuality were just NR or even R. In the eighties, PG-13 was trademarked. PG not suitable for children under 13, ten bonus points if you remember the first PG-13 movie released was "Dreamscape" with Dennis Quaid. Later, NC-17 was trademarked as a way to market "artsy-adult films" i.e. showing sex, mass nudity or severe language as art rather than porn. No Children under 17 no matter if they are with the President or Bill Gates. Ten points if you remember that the first NC-17 movie released was "Henry and June" a rendition of the life of Henry & June Miller and the infamous Anias Nin. With Uma Thurman, no less. You do have to be 17 or with someone who is 17 or older to technically get into a rated R movie, but it's not highly enforced in many places. I remember that time, as a younger man of 17 when myself, a 17 year old paI and my 16 year old buddy, where carded for the first and only time as we entered "Madonna's Truth or Dare"... add it up folks and that tells you my age. Dunno if anyone cleared this up, or if anyone cares, but Melissa Joan Hart's favorite band is the Smashing Pumpkins... yeah, I looked it up on some fan sites, that's how bored I was... I used to work for a movie theater, and yeah, we carded for R movies if appropriate. Most movies we slid on, but more intense stuff we carded for. For example, something graphic like Saving Private Ryan or something sexually explicit like Basic Instinct. I was kinda irked when I got carded for Scream 2, but I shoved my ID at the poor-ol'-minimum-wage-earner-pimple-faced-box-office kid and said, "Look, I'm well over 17. I can have a beer, thank you". Yeah, it's kinda lame. But I think it gives the employees at the movie theater some sort of weird power trip that they enjoy. My philosophy is, if you *really* believe you understand what a movie is about, and you have a pretty good grip on reality, you can watch it. (or they did not want to pay the fees to the MPAA to get a rating) NC-17 movies tend to be respectable films with some adult content (or extreme violence), and are usually shown in normal theaters along with the usual slate of G, PG, and R movies. I have been listening to TMBG since 1987 and have attended 4 of their shows in Salt Lake City, Ut. I missed the Apollo 18 show...twice! I was so bummed! I went to Nebraska with my dad and the last night we were there TMBG were playing Denver and The next night we were in Denver and they were in Salt Lake. We did listen to all their albums up to that point in the car from Nebraska to Denver to kind of make up for missing the concert (but it just wasn't the same!). TMBG is one of my favorite bands, and when I tell most people this, they're like, "Who is They Might Be Giants? I've never heard of them. Who do they sound like?" This last bit is a question I just can't answer-they have a sound like no other musician around. Totally unique and I must say, very creative. You have to be pretty smart to write songs like "Mammal" and "James K. Polk" and have them turn out so eloquently. I took a Mammalogy course at Utah State University a few years back, and my friends and I shared "Mammal" with the professor (who is also the Dean of Science and really only listens to classical and Opera). He said "It was very clever", and this is a lot coming from someone who thinks that "salamanders are the most precious, voluptuos, fabulous creatures on the face of this planet and if there is a God, he/she/it would look exactly like a salamander!" While taking a course in Cell (or rather HELL Biology as it was known to my friends and I) Biology, we would sing "Why Does The Sun Shine" in it's entireity before every exam to relieve stress. We also did this for our physics exams too, but for a different reason-it was relevant to what we were studying, especially when we were talking about universal stuff (that song alone helped me a lot on the exam covering that material-I got 98/100!) These same friends and I will be in attendance at the SLC show on the 15th. There was a lot of confusion about the date of the show for a while. First it was announced as the 17th of September, then the 15th of October, and back to the 15th of September. Anyone know who the opening band will be? Also, since it won't be at the Fairgrounds as usual(due to the State fair going on from the 10th-20th), has anyone been to the Wasatch Event Center before for another concert recently. I just want to know how it compares. We are really looking forward to it since we had so much fun at the last show! Anyway, that's about all for now-gotta go and Do the Dumb Things I Gotta Do... Rock On! Oh, I certainly don't think the current rules are ideal, but from my understanding of the original post, the issue wasn't whether the rule should exist, but rather whether it made sense or not -- ie was consistent with the other ratings. However, I don't think anyone ever gets a fake ID to go to see an R rated film if they are underage. I will share with all underage people the secret to see R-rated movies: Buy a ticket for a different movie and go see whichever one you want. This will work in 90% of movie theatres. If you are obviously very young, then they may spot you in the theatre. Also, some theatres are very paranoid and check your ticket at the entrance to each screening room. But by and large, this is a good method. Just be sure not to try to buy tickets for the R rated film first, otherwise they'll be suspicious if you then try and get tickets for a lesser movie. So...no fake IDs, at least not usually. Fake IDs are usually for drinking, which is another issue entirely. But even in that area, it is usually far easier just to find someone older to buy you alcohol. Not being a drinker myself I haven't had to deal with this problem, but enough of my friends drink (and drank when they were underage) that I know how they usually acquired liquor.
