Im 18, and am getting over the feeling that im like 80. I can get a library card without my mommy now. And i can go to jail! Nevertheless, all the "Im 18, schools out for summer stuff" left me nonplussed, and my gf just turned 17, so i feel like an old man. oh man. ive never thought of tmbg songs as make out music, but some of their music gets the ol blood going. its not cliche'd to say that sexxy is just like, unh, slow booty-shakin hot (another thing about me--i havent been in english class for a good 4 months). Linnell, in some of his videos, just looks like sex. in the much music interview, where the johns play mammal, linnell's got that direct, unabashed, sex look in his face. does anyone think lin looks like prince? the only prob is, whenever i introduce someone to tmbg, like in the car, the dialogue usually goes like this: : what's this? : oh, its They Might Be Giants. : ha ha ha, it sounds more like They Might Be Crap! (satisfied with their clever pun) : ok get out of the car now im not indian, but we had an indian club at my school, and it turned into the pretend to talk about indian stuff but actually listen to they might be giants club. time for bed chris c h r i s m c g r a w cookie in one hand dont call me at work wait baby.i didn't.mean to say nightmare ------------------------------ From: Kreadoubt@aol.com Message-ID: <3714e4ae.35f22c27@aol.com> Date: Sun, 6 Sep 1998 02:31:03 EDT Subject: TMBG: Seattle, Bumbershoot 9/5 If you don't live in Seattle, and/or didn't go to Bumbershoot tonight, you might as well delete this now. :) So, I went to bumbershoot, in Seattle, tonight. When I was a senior in HS (1990-91) I was in this AP English class. My teacher was also the drama teacher, so during the 3rd quarter, we all read Classic Novels of ourt choice and had all these projects to do on them. We had these things called "viz"es where we were to tell the rest of the class about our books (everyone did a different one) without actually telling them about it like a book report. Mine was "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. My teacher had a killer sound system in his room, and I played a little ditty called "Whistling in the Dark"-the whole thing. There were obvious TMBG fans in that class-they were all dancing in their chairs and then there were people in there who obviously had no clue as to what it was. They had this look on their faces that just screamed "What the HECK is this? (cuz y'know, this is in Utah. I've always wondered why even replace words with other words when you know you really want the real word because that's how you really feel! Like for example, "You Son of a Biscuit!" or "Go to Heck!" Heck isn't really a place. Say what you mean-it's OK-Hell is a proper noun!) They obviously couldn't appreciate the fine art of TMBG. I've found it to be my experience that there are two kinds of people when it comes to TMBG-the one who really love them abnd those that really hate them, mainly because they don't understand them and people don't like things they don't understand. Polk, The Guitar, BFTPOTA, Racist Friend, She's Actual Size, No One Knows My Plan, WDTSS?, Istanbul, NC, and there was probably more, but I can't remember... there was conga-ing too. Flans signed autographs after their performance, but I don't know where Linnell was. Flans signed my DAS shirt, and my printout of the Salvation Army They logo. I asked him for a handshake before signing my stuff and he said that I was like one of the first ones who didn't just throw a shirt or a poster of some other band in his face. I also asked him when he's bringing Mono Puff to St. Louis and he said soon. Also onstage they confirmed that Mississippi Nights performance but he had no idea what day. He just knew that it was the end of September. Anyways, it was great and if any of you were there, add to what I have said. While this is technically true, a band generally plays to please an audience. If the audience is not pleased, the chance that they will attend future shows is lessened. Sure, the Johns can do what They want, but that doesn't mean people have to like it. > Maybe it's a > divine ritual, and playing Dr. Worm twice will bring back Greenghoul, the > questionable god of consumption! I wrote this down while listening at liveconcerts.com: STD Theme New York City Istanbul (Not Constantinople) They Got Lost Twistin The Famous Polka - "We haven't played this one in five years, last time we did part of the stage fell in." Mammal - "If Joan Baez was here she'd be kickin your ass!" Subliminal Older SEXXY - "This is dedicated to our one true love, the ladies." Birdhouse James K. Polk Battle for the Planet of the Apes Spy - "Mr. Hickey, tell me what you want what you really really want." (Scary Spice girl reference!) Lie Still, Little Bottle Window Shoehorn (with Dan on the glockenspiel) Racist Friend Whistling in the Dark WDTSS - The "grunge" version Spider The Guitar No one knows my Plan Encore: Dr. Worm Concert sounded great... the Johns sounded like they were having fun out there, very talkative... If someone out there actually went to the concert, I'll let them describe it in more detail... That's it... v^v Jeffro v^v _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. A few skips, very little rebuffering... The beauty of Ethernet... ;-) The constantly refreshing picture was kind of annoying - the camera was too far away for you to tell it was TMBG playing... Still, that's a minor gripe. :-) Here's a setlist, for those of y'all who didn't have a chance to listen. A few songs were total surprises... STD theme Broom NYC Istanbul They Got Lost Twistin' The Famous Polka Mammal (Flans: "if Joan Vayez (sp?) were here, she'd be kickin' your ass right now!") Subliminal Older SEXXY Birdhouse JKP Battle For The Planet Of The Apes (people won) Spy (Flans pulls a little Wannabe in the improv) Lie Still Little Bottle Window (wow! When was the last time they played this?) Shoehorn With Teeth Your Racist Friend Whistling In The Dark WDTSS? Spider The Guitar No One Knows My Plan (with greatly extended conga intro) Dr. Worm (only once? Wow!) BTW, who all else is planning on attending the Atlanta show on 10/10? I asked my roommate (a semi-fan) if he'd be interested in going, not thinking he'd be interested, but the chances look pretty good that we'll go... I've only met two Internet-type-TMBG-fans before, and I'd like to up that number... :-) -Adam -- /=---------------- http://www.he-man.org/ctyner/ ----------------=\ http://www.awod.com/gallery/rwav/ctyner/ The home of He-Man, "Weird Al", Yoo-hoo, Killer Tomatoes, and more! I caught most of it... luckily I'm on the East coast and it started at 11:30 instead of 8:30... so here is my review http://www.liveconcerts.com TMBG Sept. 6 8:00 - 9:30 They played a lot of songs they don't normally play for instance, a couple of my faves were: Mammal, Subliminal, BFTPOTA, Bottle, WINDOW!!! Whistling (pretty rare at TMBG shows), Spider was great as usu. Racist Friend (which I thought was You'll Miss Me at the beginning) and of course nothin' beats a good Shhhhhpy! (no broom, however, have they stopped doing this?) they also have a new guitarist Dan Miller? anyone seen him? their new bassist, although I think this has already been mentioned is Dan Weinkof(sp?) (is he from the band Lincoln?) Linnell told a funny story before playing Mammal about how Joan Baez was cool and didn't get mad when Flansburgh yawned in her face earlier that day... during the intro to the Guitar Flans said - "People sitting down, this song is basically about standing up" - Flans my favorite part was the song preceding No one Knows My Plan (also available on Feeny's Hatch shell Tape) Flans Sang "Every body conga, I'm not fucking kidding, Security Guys conga... people up there come down and conga, people in the bleachers conga...Put your hands on the hips of a stranger...14 bronken ankles, one lost eye...make new friends, ditch your old friends, lose your wallet, lose your ride home, every body conga, and faster, and faster" They left after NOKMP and played Dr. Worm? again? I dunno... I missed the first 25%? Anyway, a good concert even though I couldn't see them and my stupid computer had to buffer and decongest every 2 seconds... Tim, gonna see Squirrel Nut Zippers now... Miscellaneous Tim AKA TMB(do)G AKA Tambo (IRC) AKA Mr.Train (OML) Favorite TMBG song update: Everybody Conga Last CD purchase: Swingers (sndtrk.) Favorite mainstream song: One Week - BNL _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail.
