Message-ID: Hello. I'm taking a poll for a new page I'm working on which will list people that have had Flansburgh let them play his guitar at shows.. I've seen him stick the neck of his guitar into the audience and let anyone who can reach play with the strings for a bit.. I think he usually did this during Spy. Also, he sometimes singles someone out who is front row and gives them his pick to let them play on a song.. usually this happens at the beginning of 'The Guitar', and the lucky person plays the chords while Flans does the fingering (this happened to me), although he has been known to do this during other songs such as 'Dig My Grave' and 'Battle For the Planet of the Apes'.. If this has happened to you, please email me (tdk@tmbg.org) and tell me about it! Tell me what the date/city/venue was, what song you played on, do you still have the pick, tell me the story of how it happened, etc. Once I have a few people's responses I'll put a page up dedicated to these lucky people! -Mike http://www.cybercomm.net/~tdk/index.html ------------------------------ Message-ID: <35F4E91C.974C42A6@pacificnet.net> Date: Tue, 08 Sep 1998 00:21:54 -0800 From: BONGO Subject: Re: TMBG: The Big , Big Dr. Worm Campaign! tmbgirl/ JOrdaN said: >okay, i think this would work if we could get it started with a few radio stations (possibly start at one coast and work our way across, or start at both coasts and work our way in). For one reason when you call the station, you know Mr. DJ is directly hearing your request. >okay, so if we're starting in socal why don't you add 91X on there... get us some e-mail addy's and phone numbers. when you send them to us, post 'em to the NG and the musings board at tmbg.org and we'll see how well this works.> My original idea was for everyone to call their local stations but it might be a good idea to focus on certain influential stations. Some of them have toll-free request lines. I'm not sure if they are accessible throughout the country but my local stations are: KROQ (1-800-520-1067) and Y-107 (1-888-999-9107). I'm curious to know if those numbers will work outside of California. I can't get 91X where I live but its a really cool station and I can imagine them playing it. >other ideas #1 to follow their tour. so for the next couple of weeks request it in Cali, then utah, colorado, texas, then MO... > Makes sense. Funny thing is that every time TMBG come to my town the show is always sponsored by KROQ yet they never play them. >#2 when you do call them, merely request They Might Be Giants. not necessarily Dr. Worm. If they start out playing Particle Man, BiYS, and I(NC) people will remember who TMBG are in the first place and then as more requests come in the stations will be more willing to play Dr.W > I disagree a little on this one. We don't have time for everyone to rediscover TMBG in order to get Dr. Worm attention. KROQ regards TMBG as an 80's new wave oldies band. They don't seem to know how many really young people are into the band. >#3 call during odd hours of the day at first. they're more willing to play it at off-hours (late at night). then as they get more requests they'll feel a little more comfortable playing it during peak hours. > That is very true that they are more likely to play it on off hours. However I think it would be very beneficial to request at ALL HOURS even during peak hours. The first step is to make all the DJs (or others answering the request lines) aware that Dr. Worm exists and people want to hear it. Eventually the info will get passed on to those in charge of the staion's programming. Don't worry if they play it or not. Just dutifully call them twice a day. If we all did that, we would be successful. -B O N G O _____________________________________________ "I dance like my feet are my tongue when I eat" -Geggy Tah ------------------------------ From: neal_shankman@gocubs.com Date: 8 Sep 1998 07:30:00 -0700 Message-ID: <19980908143000.27179.cpmta@tehama.criticalpath.net> Subject: TMBG: Chicago shows... 10/2-3 Allo all, Any Chicago listees planning on attending one or both of the shows at The Vic? Well, I'm happy to say that despite the fact I only ran into one Listee (GaritRN@aol.com), and was probably standing right next to about three or four, the concert at Bumbershoot kicked royal ass. For those of you who are wondering who I was and was sure I was right behind you... I was the guy wearing the Bug shirt with long hair and a rather bass voice. I scooted to front row center, about two feet behind the barricade, but was moshed back to about 20 feet in front of Linnell. You may have seen me dancing around and waving my lighter... I Am Not Your Broom - This only sucked because security confiscated my broom so I couldn't get the Johns to use it. Now the only thing that came from the song is security-guy enmity. Oh well. Broom will go next concert. STD Theme-Rocked, especially with guitars and such. Live, it was VERY cool. New York City-Rocks! Rocks rocks rocks! The whole audience, which consisted of about 2000 singing TMBG fans, was VERY cool. They still haven't lost their touch! Istanbul (Not Constantinople)-A copy of the STD version. Sounded great, and got the audience dancing. They Got Lost-Another STD clone. Nobody knew this one, though, since apparently STD hasn't been too hot in Seattle. Twistin-LOVED this one! I was dancing my head off, and so was everyone else. It got a little moshy, though, and I was surfed away from my friend. The Famous Polka - "We haven't played this one in five years, last time we did part of the stage fell in." -- Yeah, I was esctatic. No lyrics, but I was fine with putting them back into the song. Mammal - "If Joan Baez was here she'd be kickin your ass!" --This was the song they declared to be their "one slow song of the night." So I busted out my lighter along with five or six other people and swayed and swayed and swayed. The love was flowing freely... or maybe it was the pot smoke...? Subliminal - Kicked ass! This was one of many songs I really didn't expect to hear, and They pulled it off greatly. Linnell really got into this one with the accordion. My metalhead friend was there, and after the concert he said this was his favorite song (he'd never heard TMBG before). Older - Typical of concerts, I've heard it a billion times, but it never fails with the audience. SEXXY - "This is dedicated to our one true love, the ladies." - Worked very well. Not my FAVORITE song, but it was cool. I danced by crossing my arms over my head each time they said "X." Birdhouse - Another STD clone, but the sinergy (sp?) was amazing. EVERYONE knew this one and was singing along. James K. Polk - CONFETTI CANNON! I caught a gigantic chunk of the shredded money even! Battle for the Planet of the Apes - The audience REALLY REALLY got into this one. That, and I got a few good yells in, such as "APES! APES!" ...and "Of COURSE the People won! We had the LEFT hand!" Spy - "Mr. Hickey, tell me what you want what you really really want." (Scary Spice girl reference!) - Spy was cool. Spy was REALLY cool. Flans led the audience in a shout fest versus the band. I think we won. ;) Lie Still, Little Bottle -STICK! STICK! Window - Something else I really really didn't expect to hear, but I busted out my lighter. 'Twas very good. Shoehorn (with Dan on the glockenspiel) -Oh, man, the glock was great. The audience went MAD for Dan. And everyone was singing mightily. Racist Friend - THIS KICKED ASS! One of my favorite Flood songs, I hadn't heard this in ages, and it ruled. Heavily. Whistling in the Dark - I simply can't get enough of the swingin' version of this song. I love it almost as I love the new cajun-ny sound of Particle Man. WDTSS - The "grunge" version - I've heard it a million times, and there was no change. Oh well. Spider - Johns are my hero. All I have to say. The Guitar -Yes! Kicked royal ass! I was jumping up and down, and the lighter came out for the parts about the Lion. No one knows my Plan - "Every-bo-dy CON-GA! I'm not fu-cking KIDD-DING!" This kicked ass, and after I was done hopping around madly and screaming and fussing so for about ten seconds, I immediately grabbed the chick in front of me and forced the two of us into the conga line. Encore: Dr. Worm - This is gonna be good. KNDD, the radio station in Seattle who claims to play "only new music" (and will still play Smells Like Teen Spirit instead of Dr. Worm), and who probably threw out the Doctor Worm single when they got it, is gonna get screwed. Because when They came back to an encore that was demanded by 2000 screaming, rabid, frothing, sweaty TMBG fans, Flansy's first words were something like "Okay, this is our new single, you guys gotta call up 107.7 The End and request this, it's called Doctor Worm." They're probably at Cellophane Square right now looking for the CD. Also, NON-TMBG but IMPORTANT: You've gotta go to www.bsaprotest.org. The Boy Scouts have really done it this time. Now they're expelling the Unitarians from their "organization" because of two reasons: they sympathize with homosexuals and they sympathize with agnostics. So now the Boy Scouts kicked them out on their ass. Please please please, even if you don't sign the petition at http://www.bsaprotest.org , at least forward it on to as many friends as possible. Polk / I Should Be Allowed to Think / Birdhouse in Your Soul / New York City / End of the Tour my rationale: Birdhouse, Ana Ng, Don't Let's Start, Dr. Worm, Til My Head Falls Off - they're great songs, and they are quite catchy. Shoehorn, Heart Attack, Turn Around, Famous Polka, Whistling in the Dark - shows their "odd" side, without emphasizing it, or making them look like a joke band End of the Tour, She's an Angel, I Should Be Allowed to Think - shows their more serious and dark side. plenty of people go for that. maybe that's not good enough to convert the masses (frankly, I think the only way to convert the masses would be to put out total crap) it's really amazing what you can fit in 74 minutes...
