Songs in the Key of Life - Stevie Wonder Prolonging the Magic - Cake Made in USA - Pizzicato 5 Heaven or Las Vegas - Cocteau Twins Jazz 'round Midnight - Gershwin Born on a Pirate Ship - BNL Lovers Only - OST4 from Escaflowne (a *great* Anime) Grosse Pointe Blank - Soundtrack Man, as I look back on that, that's a odd mix. Depends on my mood, I guess... But I've really been diggin' lounge music lately -- the Ultra Lounge collection is totally choice. I can't really say what the 10 best of the year would be, since I couldn't listen to 'em all. Seems to be a recurring problem... so many albums, so little time. C o u r t n e y L . For the records, my first concert was Harry Belefonte when I was....oh, say 8 or 9. It was pretty kickin' & Harry ripped some shit up. Awwww yeah. Anyhoo, here's all them other concerts I've been to since then: 7/21/96 - "Weird Al" Yankovic (I sold all of my albums in disgust later that year; not becuase of the live shoe, but because they got REAL old) 9/11/98 - Man or Astro-Man? (I didn't even get to stay for all of this because the guitar player stepped on a nail & they didn't start until around 12 AM) 9/27/97 - Less Than Jake / Blink 182 (why did I go to this concert? I don't even like ska or punk music.) 10/22/97 - TMBG / Lincoln (great show, crappy bootleg; I wanted to see Lincoln again but they hadda breat up) 2/16/98 - Ben Folds Five (Although they put on a very good show, the crowd was less than enjoyable) 6/2/98 - Beck / Ben Folds Five / Sean Lennon (great show; 3 good bands in one night, what could be better?) 10/4/98 - TMBG (another winner of a show, even better than the first & I taped a very good copy of it) 10/11/98 - Soul Coughing (not only were Soul Coughing a great live band, their opener Los Amigos Invisiables were great Latino disco fun!) Plus, I got a ticket to go see Sloan January 29! It's about time I get to see those guys play. I'll probably get around better now that I gots me a LICENCE today!!!!! Hot damn! I feel free, like a bird except without all the feathers & the ability to fly & the fact that I still resemble a human being. Aside from that, I have played 3 live shows, 2 with one band & one acoustic show with my friend. I also have the privledge to say that one of the shows I played at was busted up by the po's during our set. Lotsa good, clean, sudsy fun. So, I'm going now. Yup. Also from Canada (why are all the good groups from Canada? Is it something in the water?), they're a humor group and a damn good one at that. If you (like me) have a secret Canada fixation, get it and sing along with "The Mountie Song", "Canada's Really Big", and (my personal favorite) "The Last Saskatchewan Pirate". There's also the anti-vegetarian protest song "Carrot Juice Is Murder", and--oh, I'll stop here before I end up listing all the songs. Just get it. - The Nields--Play. Didn't like it as much as I thought I would (it veers too close to "country" for my taste), but still a cool CD, with the kind of insightful, multilayered lyrics that I love. Those Darn Accordions! put on an entertaining show, but their CD doesn't really stand up to repeated listening. Weird Al fans might give them a whirl. Ditto Geno Delafose & the French Rockin' Boogie, minus the Weird Al part. Can anyone point me towards a really good zydeco band? Alt.music.moxy-fruvous has been singing the praises of SNMNMNM (or some such), and they almost always have excellent taste. --nicole twn ------------------------------ From: LOADTMBG@aol.com Message-ID: <51110f73.36884cdf@aol.com> Date: Mon, 28 Dec 1998 22:30:39 EST Subject: TMBG:Videos Hey! If anyone is interested in the song list, just e- mail me. Also, did anyone who ordered the new Comp. from the Info Club get it early or have a more definate date of arrival? :-) LOADTMBG@aol.com ------------------------------ From: KdsInThHal@aol.com Message-ID: <830cf6c5.36885f1f@aol.com> Date: Mon, 28 Dec 1998 23:48:31 EST Subject: Re: TMBG:First concerts, other bands. >New favo(u)rites in my neck o'the woods: >- Great Big Sea i finally heard some of their stuff and i wasn't that impressed. i'd heard them be (?) compared to bnl, fruvous and tmbg so i was kinda excited to hear them, but i did and i couldn't believe they got bunched in there. i don't see any similarities. >Also from Canada (why are all the good >groups from Canada? I want to go but I would have to go by myself. Normally, I wouldn't mind but it seems kind of depressing to me to spend New Year's Eve out by myself. It was either that or go to a party with some friends. I'd rather see TMBG. So if anyone is going and would be interested in meeting up beforehand, please let me know as soon as possible so I can buy a ticket. Email me privately please. My top ten CDs this year (though not all of them are from 1998): TMBG: STD Mono Puff: IFTS Suede: Sci-Fi Lullabies Disc1 Ben Folds Five: Whatever and Ever Amen Julie Plug: (forgot the name) Eleanor McEvoy: What's Following Me? Liz Phair: whitechocolatespaceegg Radiohead: OK Computer Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Live in the Middle East The Selzers: After School Special (my friend's brother's band; very catchy and cool pop) My first concert was an instore for TMBG in October '96 at Tower Records. I snuck out of work to see (and hear) Them for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed myself. So much so that I saw Them again seven more times. And hopefully, this Thursday will be my ninth. Being at a TMBG show seems like a cool way to start the new year. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ From: tmbgirl@juno.com Date: Mon, 28 Dec 1998 22:32:02 -0700 Subject: Re: NON-TMBG: top 10 of the year (My ranting about things) Message-ID: <19981228.223337.3862.3.TMBgirl@juno.com> >The Stranger by Albert Camus yeahyeah!!! i read l'etranger a couple of weeks ago and assuming that how i translated it was at least somewhat near the real/intended purpose (although, with my french skills, one can only imagine) it's an amazing book! :D >A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess classic :) >Great Expectations by Charles Dickens so many people don't like Dickens but GE is an awesome book... i read this before the movie was released and basically i saw the previews and knew it was one of those movies that would just ruin the book (what i refer to as the "narnia syndrome") so i didn't see it. i think they changed the story around a bit anyways in the movie, not sure tho. >The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton damn i think i read that about...uh... 6 or 7 years ago... right after i read Jurrasic Park. :P take it easy, JOrdaN http://www2.netcom.com/~arnot/joda/bootlegs.html :::currently reading: the sound and the fury::: ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Woo hoo! How ecstatic I am. This will be my second time seeing Them. This year I really dug: Sloan - Navy Blues Stereophonics - Word Gets Around The Promise Ring - Nothing Feels Good I'm not sure if they all came out this year. I bought Jonny Polonsky's Hi My Name Is Jonny and I liked that too. And all the CMJ CD's I've gotten this year rock! My first concert was Oasis in 1995. It was fun. I felt so fragile and new. I had so much fun there. The last concert before this (TMBG) one was the Backstreet Boys. Ha ha, not a lie. The other TMBG show I went to was so much fun. It's not often I get to be in a club surrounded by people just like me. Sometimes I feel like such a freak because I don't know too many people who listen to the same music I do, but when I'm at a show, I get so happy because everyone there likes my music too. -Keembearlee ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of tmbg-list Digest #13-29 ******************************
