I'm told by some beautiful young thing (who know's who she is and lurks even more than I) that I don't mail the list enough, so here I am. To all those new peeps on the list, may I introduce myself, I am Uncle Squid. The name has nothing to do with TMBG, iy has more to do with the fact that I am a Squid and and Uncle. Oh, and I'm a thick Brit and I'll never get to see TMBG live because they won't ever play in this green, pleasent land ever again. I run a site called the TMBG: Fans's tribute site, where it is possible to see TMBG related odds and sods that us fan-peeps have done. These include pictures, articles and alike. There is a section which shows the listees photos which I am quite proud of. You can see all the peeps who have flamed, agreed and said "hi" to you. If you still havn't sent me your picture.... DO IT and it'll be up there within a few days. The URL is on my sig bit at the bottom and if you want your work on the site, just send it to me (zipped if it's a biggie). Oh, and I finally found my John Henry CD case which has been missing for like three months or something! It had found it's way into the box of my dear old father's head phones... well, there you go, no more boxlessness for JH! To the person who runs the MP3 archive... Hola all! I just saw Firewater last night for the first time, and boy oh boy, what a show it was! First of all, the opening band was called Cathode. They did instrumentals that were somewhere between trippy surf-rock and The Dirty Three. It was fun to listen to, although it was a lot more mellow than the stuff I had gone there to see. I still enjoyed them, though. The second band took over Skeleton Key's spot in the show when SK took a European Tour with Primus. The band was called Neptune, and it was easy to see why they were chosen. All of their guitars (and half of the drumset) were constructed out of metal scraps. The bass guitar had wheel spokes inside it, which Jessica (the bass player) used as an instrument in part of one song. Half of the drum kit was made out of a butane tank and scraps of metal that I couldn't identify. They were really good! I had never heard of them before, so I didn't know what to expect. The closest thing that I can compare them to is Skeleton Key. They're sort of a less-lyrical, less bassy, more oddly rhytmic Skelton Key. If you get a chance, check them out sometime. Then the band I was there to see came on. Whoo hoo for Firewater! They played for an hour before coming back to do *two* encores. It was an interesting show-They opened with the instrumental "Ponzi's Theme" and, as they started, Tod A., doing his best Chuck Berry impression, lept into the air and kicked out. He hit his microphone stand which went teetering into the audience (namely me and some girl standing next to me). Tod then went on to tell us all that there was a shortage of air tonight, "So if you'd kindly refrain from breathing, we'd all appreciate it." There were even Firewater followers, who came all the way ofut from Albany to see the show. "Where are those guys that were following me from Albany?" Tod asked at one point, "They just wanna hear this one song, and we're not even playing it tonight.." They wanted to hear "Balaliaka," but were more than content with the setlist as it stood. It was clear early on that Firewater was only interested in having a good time and playing the music well. There was an energy at the show that came out in every song, whether it be when someone knocked something over by accident (later on Paul, the keyboardist, while dancing around with a tambourine, would knock over a monitor), or when one of the band would hop into the audience to dance with us. It was almost beyond a concert. There we had a roomfull of people dancing the cha-cha, a tango, singing a sea chanty and a gospel-like drinking song. For one night, the lines between the band and the audience were dropped, everyone forgot how horrible the weather was that night and everyone seemed to forget about everything else besides the music that seemed to float through the air like leaves in the wind. The best was to describe the whole night was with the last song. The final encore they did was a gospel-eque song called "knock 'em down." The crowd started clapping in time, singing the simple chorus of "knock 'em down, knock 'em down, knock 'em down." (the crowd had been singing before, but not as audibly as then.) Tod A., tambourine in hand, hopped into the audience singing the refrain "our time on earth is brief/we don't want no strife or grief/ so knock 'em down, lords and ladies, knock 'em down!" Where he went in the crowd, everyone followed, either with their eyes or their hands. The clapping and singing and shouting got louder (one would think that Firewater was having a revival in the Middle East Upstairs). It was unique! Earlier in the evening, I had the distinction of dancing with Paul (after he had knocked over the monitor) when he hopped into the audience. This is what it's all about. This is the tyoe of concert that everyone should get to experience once in your life at leat. After the show, the band hung around to talk to everyone (Tod A. was shaking everyone's hand and talking about everything with everyone) and sign autographs and such. I think that Tod (btw, I am spelling his name right, that's how he spelled it, anyway!) summmed it up nicely when he said: "F@ck the mainstream. It's about the *music.*" I couldn't agree more.
