This one's tricky, but I'll try my best to keep the list short... No way I can stay under 10... Barry Lyndon (I'll get my Kubrick favorites out of the way first... Eyes Wide Shut might be something I'd add to this list after I see it, but for now, who knows...) 2001: A Space Odyssey A Clockwork Orange Lolita (Kubrick Version) Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb Evil Dead 2 (Humour and Horror; I love how true continuity means nothing to this series... It's like they just take the simpler bits and add them to the next movie, making it so complex that they drop some of the story from the next one!) Life Is Beautiful (Roberto Benigni = Comedy and Dramatic genius!) Shine (A movie I really didn't think I'd like) Braveheart (If it's a quality Epic saga-type of movie, I'll love it!) Meaning of Life Life of Brian Monty Python and the Holy Grail (get those pesky MP movies out of the way...) It's a Wonderful Life Star Wars (basically all the Star Wars movies. Empire Strikes Back most of all) Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (the other 2 as well...) Spaceballs The Party (Peter Sellers was a brilliant actor) Event Horizon (Cheesy Sci-Fi!!! Woohoo!) Dune (Among the strangest movies I've seen) Adventures of Baron Munchausen Brazil (I, too, like Terry Gilliam's work... And not just because of Monty Python) I'll stop there, as I'm sure the more movies I think of, the more I'll list. Bob "When TMBG makes a movie, I'll star as Dentist Sam!" Users on 28.8 and 33.6 modems will see something that looks like a series of still pictures. Users at higher rates (up to a maximum of 220kb/s) will gradually see more action up to the full film. If you're on a slower connection and want to see the whole thing your best bet is to download the AVI, but it's huge and will take a long time to download. -- Leo Bicknell - bicknell@ufp.org Systems Engineer - Internetworking Engineer - CCIE 3440 Read TMBG List - tmbg-list-request@tmbg.org, www.tmbg.org ------------------------------ From: Matt James Message-Id: <199907091436.KAA10283@fellspt.charm.net> Subject: Re: Non-TMBG:Your Star Wars Name/10 Fave Movies Date: Fri, 9 Jul 1999 10:36:14 -0400 (EDT) > <> > D'oh! Mine's Alan Kreider. My old roommate's was Vincent VanGogh (no joke) 1. Trainspotting - Scottish junkies, skag deals, and gritty filmmaking. 2. Fear and Loating in Las Vegas - My roommate and I watched this film an uncountable number of times. I'm in the middle of reading the book. Benicio Del Toro makes a better Dr. Gonzo than the guy who played him in Where the Buffalo Roam. Same for Johnny Depp vs. Bill Murray as Hunter S. Thompson. 3. Pulp Ficiton - Quentin Tarantino's Second best film, with Samuel L. Jackson in one of the best of his many vaired roles. 4. Reservoir Dogs - Quentin Tarantino's best film, written so well it could be a play. 5. Akira - I first saw this in a tiny theater in Lawrence and it blew my mind. 6. The Shawshank Redemption/Usual Suspects - The best parts are the final 15 minues. 7. Holy Grail - Delightfully Silly. "Someday son this will all be yours" "What? The Curtains?" 8. Yellow Submarine - The psychadelic cartoons still give me chills/thrills. 9. Sling Blade - I like them french fried potaters, hmmm-hmmh. Plus Dwight Yokam really does a good job of playing the redneck prick you have to hate. 10. Fear of a Black Hat - Rusty Cundieff's Spinal-Tap like masterpiece about the fictional rap group N.W.H. A must see. Absolutely. 11. Saving Private Ryan - Best war film I've ever seen. 12. Princess Bride - "To Blathe, which means to bluff, This man obviously owes you money" 13. Der Himmel uber Berlin (Wings of Desire) - Wim Wenders classic story of angel sees girl, angel falls in love with girl, angel becomes human to be with girl. Not quite as good but still interesting is the sequel "Far Away, So Close" (I'm not sure what the German title is.) 14. Die Blechtrommel (The Tin Drum) - The actor who plays Oskar is very unsettling, and does a great job of playing a manipulative litt boy/man. 15. Boogie Nights - Classic porn story. 16. Dave - Kevin Kline as the president who cares. (incidentally Kline plays President Grant in Wild Wild West as well as playing the agent who impersonates president Grant) 17. Austin Powers - Mike Meyers and I share a birthday! 18. Crossroads - The scene near the end with Steve Vai vs. Ralph Machio is the best, best music too. 19. The incredibly true story of two girls in love - Two girls find each other and fall in love. Surprisingly good. 20. 2001 - Chillingly bizarre. Kubrick was a genius. Too many great films to mention. Incidentally, Der Himmel uber Berlin (Wings of Desire) was the film the plot for City of Angels was stolen from, except Wim Wenders did it a whole lot better in Der Himmel. Favorite Comic Book : I'm surprised no one has mentioned this one yet, Milk And Cheese. Two dairy products gone bad. Evan Dorkin is a genius (and he writes for Space Ghost) Favorite Actor: Ewan McGregor. Trainspotting. Star Wars. Shallow Grave. Night Shift. Great Actor Runner up - Samuel L. Jackson. Too many roles to mention Favorite Actress: Julie Delpy. Even though some of her movies are bad. Favorite Porn Actor: Peter North. No one does it like Pete. Favorite Porn Actress: Chasey Lain. She's done some legit work too, check her out as one of the topless ladies in Demon Knight, and also as one of the two white girls provided for Jesus in He Got Game. Loudon Wainwright (I can't explain the latter, but enjoy): Big media enlist cult minstrels by Andy Seiler Barb-singing singer/songwriter Loudon Wainwright III and eccentric rock duo They Might Be Giants have more than their quirkiness in common. They both have devoted cult audiences who buy their recordings year after year and support their concerts tour after tour. And neither one gets played on mainstream radio. "I never get on the radio with my regular stuff," says Wainwright. Thank goodness both acts have irregular stuff. This summer, the Giants will be featured on five ABC Nightline prime-time specials, all hosted by Robert Krulwich, performing songs that illustrate or comment on Krulwich's futuristic topics, including robots, human aging and the branch of physics known as string theory. And Tuesday Hannibal/Rykodisc will release Social Studies, a compilation of 15 commissioned topical songs the normally self-absorbed Wainwright has written on everything from Bill Clinton to Y2K, mostly for National Public Radio. "We've been around for a long time, but that doesn't mean that we've ever gotten this kind of exposure," says the Giants' John Flansburgh. Flansburgh, who founded the Giants un Brooklyn with accordion player John Linnell in 1983, is even directing the Giants' segments himself. Krulwich approached the band about appearing on his Brave New World series after seeing them live. They were taken with him - and his approach - instantly. "Working with Robert Krulwich is amazing," Flansburgh says. "It's like working with a philosophical poet, which is refreshing in a TV personality. And what's great about it is we get to do it on our terms." But coming up with complimentary material (or rejiggering one of their old songs to make it fit) has been a challenge. "We're not topical songwriters," Flansburgh says. "We write songs about personal things." Still the band has already written and shot Kog vs. Dan, a "battle of the drummers" in which a (rather inept) robot drummer designed by MIT scientists squares off against Giants percussionist Dan Hickey. And they're finishing up You're Older Than You've Ever Been, a song about aging. "We haven't conjured the one about string theory yet, although I've got three books on my night table that I've cracked open and find completely daunting," Flansburgh says.
