Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 00:47:46 -0600 Ah, I never knew Tinitis could feel so damned good. I just got back from Their show at the Sunshine...whatever it is. Music place, or something. Doesn't matter. Anyway, included in this email are a review (my first, so please be gentle), a setlist, etc... Here we go. Finished with classes at 2:00 pm today, with my brain feeling thoroughly fried. This gave me a whole three and a half hours to kill before a group of my friends, along with me, were leaving. What I did during this time is irrelevant. The zero hour finally arrived, 5:30, and I jogged on over to my friend's dorm, and we left the dusty little town of Socorro for Albuquerque, home of..something cool, I'm sure. The drive from Socorro to Abq is only about an hour and a half, at most, but against my better judgement, they wouldn't put TMBG in the CD player. Instead, we listened to NIN's new double CD set. We arrived at our destination at about 7:05 - this is after stopping at the bank, and for food and such. Waited in line for a while before my little sister, escorted by my mother, showed up. Good thing, that, considering they had the tickets with them. So, with 13 year-old sister in tow, we waited another half hour in line. They started letting people in at about 5 'till 8. Went ahead and bought two t-shirts (one for me, and one for my sister). Both of them were 'Bug' shirts. Oh, and I bought the winter cap thingy, too. You Were Sprialing was supposed to come on at 8, but they were a good half hour late. It was all worth it, though. I thought they were pretty damned good, myself. The vocal levels were a bit low, so it was hard to understand the words to their songs, but that's ok. They played for a half hour or so. Then came the intermission. At precisely 9:34 p.m., the Dans took the stage. The started off with "Drinking" as their intro. John and John came onstage moments later, and started playing along. That done, they introduced themselves, and immediately went into "New York City". God, I love that song, and it was even better live. But I'm sure most of you already knew that.. Anyway, next they played "James K. Polk", complete with confetti cannon. John L. started pointing at the ground, whilst singing the part about 'he freed the whole southwest from Mexico'. Good to know They keep up with their Geography. Next, they played "Cyclops Rock" - one I'd never heard before, but am now anxiously awaiting on an album release sometime. It was pretty cool. After that, some tech guy came out and started setting up the Glockenspiel. The band started playing, and John F. - and I don't know if he was just pulling this out of thin air, or what - started singing a song about the Glockenspiel Tech. I'm sure you guys can guess what came after this. Yep, they played "Shoehorn With Teeth", another of my favorites. Now, there are a couple of songs I was desperately hoping to hear, and they played a couple of them. "Spiraling Shape" came next, one of the highlights of the night, followed by "Older". Just before they played "Older", though, they plugged their mp3 album. Next, they played another of my favorites, "Twisting". After that, Linnell said this of their next song: "This next song is going to be on the album after the one after the next one. It's due out in twenty oh four, or something. It'll be in mp12 format." Flansburgh: "No.. It'll be an implant." Linnell: "Yeah, it'll be like one of those patches you use to quit smoking. Anyway, this song is off of our next patch..." Then Flansy went into an anecdote about what happened the last time they came to New Mexico. People complained that they were too loud, or something. So they played "It's So Loud In Here" next. After that, came one I really wasn't expecting - "Mr. Claw". Another song I was desperately hoping they'd play, and they did, much to my little heart's content, was "Don't Let's Start". I was actually surprised at how many older songs they were playing. "Spy" came next, followed by "Counterfeit Faker", sung, oddly enough, by those freaky head-on-a-stick things. At this point, my sister had to leave. She still got to hear "Letterbox", which came next, though. Then Flansy re-introduced Dan Miller, who abruptly went into a solo. This solo eventually turned out to be an introduction to "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)". Then came another highlight of the show. They played "Why Does The Sun Shine?" Flans sorta messed it up, talking about how many Earths could fit inside, when he was supposed to talk about how hot the Sun was. So when it came time (five seconds later) for him to say the size thing, he just repeated himself. More than made up for that little mishap, though, when he started naming off the Fusion ingredients in the sun as Estrogen, Estrogen, Estrogen, Estrogen, and more Estrogen. I thought that was funny. :0) Another classic came next - "Particle Man". Halfway through, Linnell said something about the folly of men...then yelled out "Godzilla!!!" Thought that was pretty cool, too. Next, they played "The Famous Polka", sans words, which was fine. It rocked anyway. Lastly (for now) they played Dr. Worm. Accidentally hit Ctrl-Enter too soon. Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah. After "Dr. Worm", they left the stage. Then began the first encore. "Spider" was the first song they played when they came back out again. Flans held out his guitar for the crowd to strum at toward the end of the song. Idiot me reached out to help, and accidentally turned his volume all the way down. My bad. Sorry, Flans, if you're out there. He looked at it with one of those 'what the hell?' kinds of looks, and turned it up again. After that, came the coolest rendition of "The Guitar" I've ever heard. Flans changed some of the words, too. He sang, "Hey. The Guitar. Is it Jim? No, It's Dan. Is it Dan? I don't think so." Then came another song which, even all by itself would have made the whole thing worth while. They played, "Birdhouse In Your Soul". Then, they took off again. Everyone started to leave, thinking the show was over, then They came back out for a second Encore. They played "Maybe I Know", and finished the night off with "She's An Angel". All in all, it was a wonderful concert, as far as I'm concerned. For those who don't want to read through the whole message, here's the setlist: Drinking (Intro) New York City James K. Polk Cyclops Rock Glockenspiel Tech Shoehorn With Teeth Spiraling Shape Older Twisting It's So Loud In Here Mr. Claw Don't Let's Start Spy Counterfeit Faker (sung by the heads) Letterbox Dan Miller's Solo -- Istanbul Why Does The Sun Shine? Particle Man / Godzilla Theme The Famous Polka Dr. Worm ----------------------------- (Encore 1) Spider The Guitar Birdhouse In Your Soul ----------------------------- (Encore 2) Maybe I Know She's An Angel Well, folks, that's it. Thanks for hanging in there with me.. Oh yeah, one more thing. On the way to the concert, I got to see a blue Volkswagen Beetle on fire. It was pretty neat. Anyway, that's all. I'll send the setlist to tmbg.net. Excerpt from Q & A session with Ben Folds: Q: "Don't Change Your Plans" reminds me of (this is a compliment by the way) "It's Not Easy Being Green" or "Rainbow Connection" which, as we all know, are classic Kermit the Frog hits. Ever considered doing a Kermit cover? or even better, a Kermit duet?!? BF: No! But funny you mentioned that. We've always had a certain kind of song that we described as "frog on a log". "Plans" is the kind of "frog on a long" songs, isn't it? "Evaporated" was also considered one. So there's that. I would also say "April Fools" by Rufus Wainwright - it's just got a really upbeat Muppet-ish tune, but Rufus doesn't exactly sound like any of the Muppets. >Moxy Fruvous--Naked Puppets (Not a song, but it mentions Grover, Kermit, and >Oscar.)
