It will feature Daniel Johnston, King Missile III, members of Agnostic Front, Wesley Willis and Brian Dewan, among others covering their favorite Jed Davis songs. Indie comic legends Pete Bagge and Abby Denson will contribute artwork. "This release has tremendous significance for J-Bird Records' philosophy," said Darren Nowicki, Director, A&R. "The fact that the caliber of artists involved are rallying around and supporting a young talent demonstrates an artist community that supports the J-Bird mission for developing new talent." "What can I say? These are some of the artists that I listened to in college, and it's amazing just to hear them singing words that I wrote, about things that they kind of got me through in the first place," says Jed Davis. "This makes me feel like the eight years I spent writing these songs were actually worth something after all." Legendary singer/songwriter Daniel Johnston has had his works championed by such groups as Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and Yo La Tengo, and covered by The Dead Milkmen, and Mo Tucker of the Velvet Underground... Agnostic Front was featured on 1999's Warped Tour and are one of the most respected mainstays of the original NYC hardcore movement. AF's Jimmy Collette contributes on this release. Chronic schizophrenic Wesley Willis has over thirty albums to his credit and has been featured on MTV and the Howard Stern Show... King Missile III gained acclaim with their Billboard Top 10 hit "Detachable Penis"... Brian Dewan has collaborated and toured with They Might Be Giants and designed album covers for them and David Byrne. Everybody Wants To Be Like Jed will be available for sale online in December as part of J-Bird's Fans First program at http://www.j-birdrecords.com. J-Bird will also release Jed Davis Wastes 8 Years of His Life For Your Listening Pleasure with original versions of many of the songs covered on the tribute album. Currently available at http://www.j-birdrecords.com is Davis' J-Bird debut We're All Going To Jail. This is true for the Apollo 18 version, but NOT for the demo version, which is what's on Then. For "It's Not My Birthday," one line is given as "When the word comes down 'Never more will be around.'" This doesn't make much sense. Granted, the whole song doesn't make much sense, but wouldn't this line be a little less awkward as "When the word comes down, never more WE'LL be around"? They're pronounced pretty much the same way, so maybe the transciber just gave it his own interpretation, which happened to be the one that made less sense. The sheet gives a line in "Weep Day" as "Who is now a hermit in a cave," but it sounds to me like John is saying "Buddhist," not "hermit." What, is "Buddhist" a brand name now? -- Yours 'til my head falls off, Nathan DinnerBell@tmbg.org http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Corridor/5447/ ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Oct 1999 15:06:43 -0400 Subject: TMBG: Re: Speaking of cool stuff slipping by... I made an MP3 of today's "All Things Considered" segment and submitted it to the twistid.com/tmbg place, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it will be put up there permanently. If it doesn't appear there soon, I'll put it on my own web page for download, but it would seem silly to put it up if it's already up at twistid.com/tmbg. They are called Bernie Bernie Headflap & you can find their music on mp3.com. Anyway, Alan (the main feller in the band) is putting up a song that really kicks a lot of arse, Xenophobe, & I think that if we could get it onto the mp3.com top 40, it... would, uh.... be... a.... good......... uhm.......... thing. Seriously, this is a band that deserves the (positive) attention of more people than it is reaching & I think it will if Xenophobe can crack the top 40. Please go there tomorrow & check it out. Don't go today because it is not up yet. Actually, check out their other tunes & see what you think (my personal faves are Laughtrack 2000, Broken Room, Press Conference, Laughing Lessons, Really Awake, Tall Girl, All the Mother, & Harry Allergenic). Don't judge them on one song, however. They have a variety of styles & are currently experimenting with quite a few different sounds. I think that the blend on Xenophobe is not only very catchy & good musically, but it is damn funny (listen to the music go from indie-nerd rock to hardcore to whatever the hell else they put in the mix). Please check them out. Thanks a lot & I'd love to hear everyones feedback. The address is: http://www.mp3.com/artists/12/bernie_bernie_headflap.html cheers Steve! PS, ALL YOU IN NEW YORK CITY!!!!!!! LIS'SEN UP!!!!!! Please. Bernie Bernie Headflap will be playing The Spiral Lounge in New York City at 8:00 PM on Friday, October 15. They need the support, so check them out if you wanna. I believe they're in Cincinnatti this week > (this is the bane of my existance: They are always in Cincinnatti and > Columbus, which is too far for me to travel). Part of the reason they don't come to Cleveland often is because there never have been any radio stations around here that gave TMBG a lot of airplay. Now, of course, there are none, with 107.9 changing over to the R&B format... making me wonder who is going to sponsor their next concert here, if there is one. WENZ used to have a DJ or two who either listed TMBG as their favorite band or their favorite concert, so it sucks that it's gone now! Another part of the reason that Cleveland, in general, does not have a lot of the stuff you would think it should is that it's not "unified" enough, i.e. the demographic areas of the city are too spread out for things that need to appeal to a lot of people in one area (a reason why a lot of major chains don't have many/any stores around Cleveland). Something that really pissed me off during the John Henry era was that Tony Maimone is from Cleveland and they still stuck to their current schedule of one show here every two years. And... they were in Cincinnatti tonight, because my sister was (hopefully, depending on how her bank account problems went) at the show tonight. They have two albums out, a self-titled and Utopia Parkway, and both of them rock. The self-titled also contains the stylings of TMBG's own "band of Dans" Danny Weinkof. Incidentally, although initially planned as a b-side, their cover of "Baby One More Time" will never be released for fear on the band's part of being labeled a novelty act. ------------------------------ End of tmbg-list Digest #22-13 ******************************
