How did you manage to master the : art of time : > travel without telling any of us? : : Radio stations get copies of albums and singles early, so they can play the : songs : and get people interested in the album before it comes out. It must be fun : working : at a radio station, being able to get new releases before everyone else, : getting : cool promotional stuff, and also being able to choose what people will isten : to (if : you have that sort of power). A lot of times stations will actually truck a group of reviewers in about once a month, give them coffee and donuts, and play a bunch of songs for them. The reviewers give a first impression of a song.....if it's good, it'll normally get on. Other stations do it by a programming meeting, where the same thing is done, just with jocks, not working stiffs. Some stations do it only by the music director. To each his own. : Do radio stations get CDs all at the same time, or do record companies : slowly : distribute the promo albums to them? Umm.....it depends on the record and the company. For example, Jay-Z probably isn't going to get played on a country format station, so the companies don't bother to send CD's to country stations. The big record companies basically send demos to all the stations (within reason......let's just say that Po-dunk North Dakota with it's 1000 watt 1500 kHz AM station won't get a copy probably) that play the type of music. If it is an established artist, everyone gets it at the same time. Mr. Linnell has two problems: 1. He's on a tiny little label. 2. While we all think he's very well established, this is his first album. What Jamie (I assume Jamie is probably handling John L.'s management, too) will do is have the record company send the disc to stations he think might pick it up for rotation. Of course, a copy will end up at WFMU. I don't expect to see a copy where I work (an AM talker), but I wouldn't be at all suprised to see a copy float into one of the sister FM stations, both of which play "alternative" music.
