But at least they didn't use the q word! Here's the one thing that's always bugged me about They Might Be Giants fans, and it's going to bug me until I get my way. This was also a topic of discussion when I was a member of this list way back when. Here we go: "Quirky," although possibly over-used, is a word that fits Them really well. You all may disagree with me, but I believe I can make my point using a simple dictionary definition from dictionary.com. QUIRKY adj: informal terms; strikingly unconventional. [syn: far-out, offbeat, way-out.] Isn't that the way we like to think of our Johns? Sure, their most recent songs (i.e. "It's So Loud in Here," "Cyclops Rock") sound a bit more conventional, but that may be the direction They go in. And their live shows have always been unconventional, even now. Think of "Shoehorn with Teeth." Think of the puppet heads. Think of the way they played "Pet Name" in complete darkness. All strikingly unconventional, offbeat ways of doing things. The other definition listed here is "full of quirks," which I think also makes sense, for all of the same reasons. Spencer. ------------------------------ Message-ID: <19991001210342.72346.qmail@hotmail.com> From: "Nathan Mulac DeHoff" Subject: Re: TMBG: The "q" word (originally: "Article in student newspaper") Date: Fri, 01 Oct 1999 14:03:42 PDT Spencer Owen wrote: > >Well, the article praises the Johns, but at the same time tries to > >belittle them, I think. Gee, what makes you think that? Maybe the fact that it calls the Johns "idiots" and Their music "stupid"? I also noticed that the article referred to Their music as "happy." I guess if you're comparing TMBG music to something done by a doom-and-gloom death-metal band, it is happy. I think that a lot of people are quick to call the Johns' music "happy" without really listening to it, though. While I can't think of very many TMBG songs that are really, totally depressing, many of them do sound forlorn. Just listen to something like "Dead" or "A Self Called Nowhere." They're hardly remarkably depressed songs, but they do convey a somewhat dreary mood. >>But at least they didn't use the q word! > >Here's the one thing that's always bugged me about They Might Be >Giants >fans, and it's going to bug me until I get my way. This was >also a topic >of discussion when I was a member of this list way back >when. Here we go: >"Quirky," although possibly over-used, is a word >that fits Them really >well. I don't really have a problem with the word itself, but I disapprove of the fact that it's used in almost every review. Can't any of these reviewers come up with something slightly different? I think that the Johns Themselves, however, might actually mind the word. I don't know for sure, but Their responses to interviews often suggest that They don't see Themselves as particularly strange. Then again, I think it was Linnell who referred to Severe Tire Damage as "an oddball kind of record," so I don't really know. -- Yours 'til my head falls off Nathan DinnerBell@tmbg.org http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Corridor/5447/ ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Message-Id: Date: Fri, 01 Oct 1999 15:06:02 -0700 From: "Spencer Owen" Subject: Re: TMBG: The "q" word (originally: "Article in student >Spencer Owen wrote: >> >Well, the article praises the Johns, but at the same time tries to >> >belittle them, I think.
