This was the theme of They Might Be Giants' four-night stint at the Bowery Ballroom. Thursday night's "then" show was the dream set-list for any '80s TMBG fan, and transported the audience, for at least a little while, to the days of TMBG's earliest beginnings. But just how different is now from then for John Linnell and John Flansburgh, the dynamic duo who make up TMBG? TMBG started in 1986, with a musical blend of metaphor and grade-school jokes. That said, it's not hard to believe that they were an acquired taste for the masses. Now, John and John play to a crowd that looks like they were born and bred on the group's quirky style. Kicking it off with "Cowtown" - Flansburgh on the electric guitar, Linnell jamming on the accordion - the two journeyed back into their deep, dark '80s past. Classics from their eponymously titled first album (1986), Lincoln (1988), Flood (1990) and a few other selections came off as joyfully as they must've fifteen years ago. Following a short break, John and John were joined on stage by a full band - guitar, bass, and drums - and in TMBG's tradition of consistency, they were all named Dan. More complex tracks followed, and the audience had even more of an excuse to flail about happily. The second set started with "Particle Man," followed by "Twirling"[1] and "Birdhouse In Your Soul," al bouncy, hysterical numbers from Flood. A few new numbers were also introduced from TMBG's forthcoming full-length online release. The high-energy encore was the perfect culmination for the evening. "James K Polk," the take of one of our more forgotten presidents, was complemented by an explosion of brightly-colored confetti. The show closed with "New York City," and the duo and audience alike cheerfully sang the refrain: "Everyone's your friend in New York City" ---Deana D'Onofrio [1] this is not my mistake, it honestly says that! NEXT ARTICLE: John Linnell State Songs Rounder "Some people make it look easy. I'm making it look hard," said exhausted-looking but apologetic John Linnell, as he struggled his way through an in-store at Tower Records to promote his long-awaited solo album, State Songs (Rounder). Linnell, one-half of Brooklun duo They Might Be Giants, played six songs off his new album, armed only with an accordion. Despite his warnings to the crowd that they shouldn't expect much from the performance, those anxious to get a taste of his solo work received it excitedly. And despite Linnell's obvious fatigue, he managed to give the audience exactly what they wanted: quirky pop. Although he played solo, on State Songs Linnell receives support from a full band and a self-playing carousel organ. The central element though, is the accordion, also featured in many They Might Be Giants songs. Its tone changes from mournful, on tracks such as "Oregon," to almost jovial on "Montana," the album's first single. They Might Be Giants fans won't find exact duplicates of their sound in Linnell's solo work, but there are still quiet pop songs about seemingly inconsequential subjects (compare "South Carolina" from State Songs, a song abut a bicycle crash, to "Dirt Bike" from 1994's John Henry). As with They Might Be Giants, Linnell manages to make the inconsequential significant by using subtle humor and an uncommon outlook. ---Erica Baumash My personal take on the articles. The first one looks like the author went online and did their research, probably owns some of the albums - but other than that, has very little clue what the hell is going on. If the article is going to be called "then and now" and it makes a remark in the beginning "just how much have they changed?" i think it could have been a lot stronger if they actually bothered to review the last show as well. my $.02 The linny article confuses me a bit - i really can't tell where the person is coming from. they mention that his album is "long-awaited" and it dawned on me that very few artist's first album is ever considered "long-awaited." so i figure they must be somewhat into the tmbg-community? I think it's detarded that he draws attention to SoCar and then tries to compare it to Dirtbike, one of Flansburgh's songs. On the whole, i think the articles did well in just general stuff. Pretty groovy for non-fans considering that they're positive - that's always a bonus :D i liked 'em tho. :) any other takes? Just my belief that "Welcome to the Jungle" contains a little reference to Alice's "Welcome to My Nightmare". The lyrics to Nightmare start with something like, "Welcome to my nightmare I think you're gonna like it. I think you're gonna feel that you belong." Then Jungle's lyrics begin: "Welcome to the jungle, Jim Welcome to the jungle, Jim Welcome to it, Jim Welcome to the jungle, Anne Welcome to the jungle, Dan Welcome to it, John Think you're gonna like I think you're gonna like it" So if Linnell is an Alice fan I'd say this is a direct result. By the way, I got those Jungle lyrics from tmbg.org. Where they transcribed by a fan or are they official? Because, I always thought it was: "Welcome to the jungle gym (not Jim) Welcome to the jungle gym (not Jim here either) Welcome to it, Jim" (okay this one would be Jim) It makes sense since the song seems to be about a playground. And of course the title "Welcome to the Jungle" is after the Gun 'N' Roses hit song, right? (Let's hope Linnell isn't a fan of them!) When I found that single, and I saw the title I thought it might be a cover of that song. Granted, that's more accordion that you'll hear on most albums these days, but I hardly think that an instrument used on less than half of an album's songs can be considered the "central element." >They Might Be Giants fans won't >find exact duplicates of their sound in Linnell's solo work, but there >are still quiet pop songs about seemingly inconsequential subjects >(compare "South Carolina" from State Songs, a song abut a bicycle crash, >to "Dirt Bike" from 1994's John Henry). Let's see. "South Carolina" is fairly noisy, and gives Linnell a chance to show off his vocal range. "Dirt Bike" features quiet, subdued vocals by Flansburgh. Not really too similar, aside from the bike element. -- Relaxing on my hands and knees, relaxing on my face, Nathan DinnerBell@tmbg.org http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Corridor/5447/ ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Message-Id: Date: Mon, 01 Nov 1999 15:39:21 -0800 From: "Spencer Owen" Subject: TMBG: No, NO, NOOOO!
