Perhaps no one on the list was there? First of all I brought my kids again. I know that some of you had met them at Central Park on Father's Day, standing front row on the Flansburg side. When the manager of Toads saw me there with the kids he kindly offered to allow us to sit in the press-box which is like a small balcony behind the sound man and is equipped with two rows of comfortable theatre style seats that rock (literally). I just so happened that not more than a minute before the manager saw us, I had just made eye contact and said hi to Rob Plass so now Rob was part of the family and joined us upstairs for the show. Michael Shelley opened with his non-descript, forgettable, brand of music. Not to say he was bad, please don't flame me. I'm simply saying that although the music was quite well executed, there was no material there that left me humming an unforgettable melody afterwards. He also managed to pick a few fights with members of the audience and even took off his guitar and threatened to jump off the stage to assault someone. TMBG took the stage in similar Bowery form with Dan and Dan and Graham (yes Graham Maby not D.W.) playing the opening to "Drinking" and then being joined by the Johns half way through. The Johns have answered your flaming list demands for more variation by adding "We're The Replacements". They used the confetti cannon but suprised everyone when it wasn't during "James K. Polk, but during another song. Can't remember which one. The outstanding spot in the show was Grahams complete lapse of memory at how to play "Older". I don't think that he could even believe the fact that he had forgotten how to play it. He was looking very embarrassed. The show in whole was great though. Present on stage were the marching bass drum usually used on "Whistling In The Dark", the puppet heads, and "The Stick" but none of these were used. After the show, my son, Rob and I, plus several unknown Yale students (one in a TUX in particular that had managed to piss off the band either before or after the show) so we were told by Toads security), patiently waited outside to greet the members of the band but Flans was in no mood and rushed by the crowd graciously saying that he was in a hurry to go and Linnell snuck out a back door to avoid any confrontation. Hope to see you at the Bowery on 12/11. BTW at midnight that night I turn 42! Chadd VanZanten from the newsgroup has found the solution. Not only is the back of the State Songs booklet the design of the back of a composition book, with the numbers and figures erased, but the front of the State Songs booklet is in the design of the front of a composition book. Oh well, just looks like they couldn't fit everything because a CD booklet is much smaller than that notebook... When I first saw a picture of the State Songs cover, I actually thought to myself, "Why does that look like the cover of those notebooks that I used to have in elementary school?" But I thought nothing more of it. Now that there's no doubt that this *is* the cover of a composition book, I'm wondering if Linnell did this tongue-in-cheek. If you think about it, isn't an elementary school the most likely place to find a collection of educational, patriotic songs? Of course, these songs aren't exactly educational, but that's another story. Joe P.S. I love Arkansas. And Iowa. And the Songs of the 50 States. 'Nuff said. broom@tmbg.org http://members.xoom.com/flophousejoe/ ------------------------------ From: tmbgirl@juno.com Date: Fri, 5 Nov 1999 16:57:38 -0500 Subject: TMBG: Re: Linny vs. Tuscadero Message-ID: <19991105.165739.-429229.1.TMBgirl@juno.com> > When I first saw a picture of the State Songs cover, I actually > thought to > myself, "Why does that look like the cover of those notebooks that I > used to > have in elementary school?" They only play a couple of shows a year, and only in the Washington DC area. Melissa and Margaret both have other projects (The Long Goodbye and Hot Pursuit, respectively), Jack is concentrating on his art (www.jackhornady.com , I believe; too lazy to actually check), and Phil is...uh, doing whatever Phil does. I know Phil played bass for Sarah Shannon (formerly of Velocity Girl) recently, but that was a one-time only gig. When I finally get around to updating my Tuscadero site -- at http://www.crystal-night.com/~ctyner/ -- I have a full concert video of the Long Goodbye, and I also have the Hollywood Handsome video in its entirety. Yeah. The S-E-X-X-Y one is lower and faster, and the bridge is completely different. You can get both mp3s at http://www.twistid.com/tmbg/ if you want to hear the differences for yourself. -scratch ------------------------------ From: GhostKrabb@webtv.net (Dexter Flansburgh) Date: Fri, 5 Nov 1999 22:25:22 -0800 (PST) Subject: Re: TMBG: Sensurround Message-ID: <3324-3823C9D2-3363@storefull-242.iap.bryant.webtv.net> The only difference is the bridge. On the S~E~X~X~Y version, it's the whole different tempo, musical thing. On the Power Rangers soundtrack, it's the Johns going "Buh, buh buh buh, buh buh, buh buh buh," and then the bass mimicking it. That's the only difference I've noticed. Your's...somewhat, Dexter M.
