Right now the Virginia legislature is holding try-outs for a new state song for Virginia, with the new one to be picked either at the end of this year, or at first of next. I've marked the offending lines with asterisks, just in case you don't want to read the whole thing. ----- Carry Me back to Old Virginny Written by James Bland Carry me back to old Virginny, There's where the cotton and the corn and tatoes grow, There's where the birds warble sweet in the springtime, *There's where the old darke'ys heart am long'd to go, *There's where I labored so hard for old massa, Day after day in the field of yellow corn, No place on earth do I love more sincerely Than old Virginny, the state where I was born. CHORUS Carry me back to old Virginny, There's where the cotton and the corn and tatoes grow, There's where the birds warble sweet in the springtime, *There's where this old darkey's heart am long'd to go. Carry me back to old Virginny, There let me live 'till I wither and decay, Long by the old Dismal Swamp have I wandered, *There's where this old darke'ys life will pass away. *Massa and missis have long gone before me, Soon we will meet on that bright and golden shore, There we'll be happy and free from all sorrow, There's where we'll meet and we'll never part no more. ----- Bjorky "Dogs love me cause I'm crazy sniffable/ I bet you never knew I got the ill peripheral" -Beastie Boys 'The Move' ----- ICQ:48245386 ----- Scott's Webpage of Emptiness for the Masses http://pages.hotbot.com/und/bjorky/index.html ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Message-ID: <000801bf6d06$a36379a0$f5c47180@dynamic.rpi.edu> From: "Rachel Vecchitto" Subject: TMBG: North To Alaska! "Carry Me Back To Old Virginia" was voted out as official state song, due to its slavery/racist themes. The state of Virginia was/is having a contest (I have no idea if it's over yet or what) to find a suitable replacement. Last I checked, they'd gotten down to the finalists, and that was at least six months ago. Lyrics for "Carry Me Back..." are available at www.50states.com/songs/ ; they probably have MIDIs stashed somewhere, too. --nicole twn who wishes John Linnell would get around to writing the California song; CA has a really dumb song and I'd rather have a Linnell-penned anthem. :) *** "I felt like the best me that I'd ever been."--Peter Mulvey Visit Nicolopolis! http://wwwcsif.cs.ucdavis.edu/~carlsonn nmcarlson@ucdavis.edu ana.ng@tmbg.org carlsonn@seclab.cs.ucdavis.edu ------------------------------ From: PRMega@aol.com Message-ID: Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2000 21:49:12 EST Subject: TMBG: 2/4 Boston Show Hey all.
