I think it would be great to hear bands who list TMBG as one of their influences do covers... The Bare Naked Ladies doing something from Flood or Apollo18 (w/ a lot of harmony) would be cool...I'd also love to hear Fountains of Wayne do a TMBG cover...I have some friends (in an alterna-punk-rock-funk sounding sort of band) that are thinking about covering "I Palindrome I" sometime in the next few months... Also, I know this is an old thread, but here are the OTHER bands/artists I frequently enjoy: Fountains of Wayne...the Beatles...Jimmie's Chicken Shack...the Bloodhound Gang...Weezer...Tom Petty...Moxy Fruvous...Bastard Squad (a great new punk band)...the Vagrants (another great new band from Colorado)...Greenday...Veruca Salt...Man or Astroman?...Shadowy Men from a Shadowy Planet (who did the music from Kids in the Hall)...Blink182...Foo Fighters...Gerry Mulligan (great sax player)...lots o' retro & New Wave...and many many many others! Catch ya later... jessica **********INSERT CLEVER GENERIC QUOTE********** WARNING: Crummy ad for hotmail appears below. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Mar 2000 20:31:12 +0300 From: "Vladimir" Message-ID: <8adq6c$d5o$1@ussenterprise.ufp.org> Organization: They Might Be Giants, Unofficially http://www.tmbg.org Subject: TMBG: Internet Yellow Pages (Russian resources) This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0052_01BF8B98.BDD66EE0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_001_0053_01BF8B98.BDD66EE0" ------=_NextPart_001_0053_01BF8B98.BDD66EE0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="koi8-r" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Internet Yellow Pages (Russian resources) http://yellow-pages.gq.nu=20 ------=_NextPart_001_0053_01BF8B98.BDD66EE0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="koi8-r" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

I was practically obsessed with them for the latter half of my life (I'm 20) and although I do not listen to them quite as often as I used to, they still hold a very dear and tender place in my heart.... sigh... Bad Religion: I haven't actually listened to any of their new stuff since '96 or so but they also are very cool and I carry their tapes in my car so I can listen to them whenever the urge strikes. Bing Crosby: I looooooooooooooove his crooning! He wasn't a very nice guy, but he was one hell of an entertainer. The Proclaimers: I have not met a single living soul who has heard any other song of theirs other than the 500 miles one! Come on, guys, somebody has to back me up on this band! I know there is at least one other person on this planet who likes them! I highly recommend This Is The Story if you find it before Sunshine on Leith. Those twins kick major ass! The Police/Sting: I don't think I even need to dignify that with an explanation. Sting is a genius. Other artists/bands I also like include: Tom Waits, Alan Price (of Animals fame), Barenaked Ladies, The Sportsmen, Sarah Vaughan, Weird Al Yankovic, NOFX, any thing from the Big Band era, The Dance Hall Crashers(they're great live, too), Fred Schneider, Jay and the Americans, The Spin Doctors (the first two albums), and the Pecker soundtrack is one hell of an album, I must admit. Hmmm, is this still a topic of discontent on this list??? You can simply ask the man. From his site, weirdal.com, you can check out the "ask al" section. Here's an interesting snippet... Al: Yes, "Mr. Popeil" is meant to sound like the B52's. A lot of my originals are intentionally derivative of other groups (although not enough to infringe on their copyright!) Some other very obvious style parodies would be "Dare To Be Stupid" (DEVO), "Dog Eat Dog" (Talking Heads), "You Make Me" (Oingo Boingo), "Everything You Know Is Wrong" (They Might Be Giants) and "Germs" (Nine Inch Nails).
