I'm trying to get in contact with the girl with shortish, blonde hair who was wearing a pink shirt with white stripes on Saturday, April 15, at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. You know who you are if you're reading this. I'm the guy you were smiling at the night before and at the end of the Saturday show as I was leaving. If you read this, give me an e-mail at nb9769a@american.edu. I hope I can get the chance to talk to you, since I didn't have the chance either of those nights (the people I was with both nights needed to leave as quickly as possible because they were doing things early the next morning). I should leave spoiler space, since this will probably be the set you New York folks see on Thursday... ... spoiler space ... ............ keep going .............. ............ is that your final answer? ................. ok, that should be enough. the setlist, then comments: intro nyc cowtown don't let's start james k polk ana ng on the drag spiraling shape meet james ensor spin the dial whistling in the dark boss of me thunderbird older istanbul your racist friend they got lost shoehorn with teeth maybe i know robot parade birdhouse in your soul the guitar no one knows my plan dr. worm dig my grave ---------------------- lie still, little bottle band intros twisting ---------------------- how can i sing like a girl? quite a lot was different from Friday... I'm not sure if it was 25 songs, but there were only 9 repeats, so they did pretty well. I was surprised at some of the songs they repeated, like Cowtown and Robot Parade, and also surprised that they left out Particle Man from both shows (thankfully) The horns in They Got Lost seemed kind of gratuitous for just playing that one note in each refrain... and Gas Mask made a comeback! after Boss of Me (or before, maybe?) Flansburgh was saying "It's just 30 seconds... and soon they'll be getting shorter... soon it'll be just this " and started talking about Gas Mask and Gas Mask II, which was pretty much the same as Gas Mask, only a different chord. He also screamed it a few times elsewhere in the set. Don't Let's Start was done... amazingly straight. Linnell didn't do anything fancy for the second verse, and later on, while he just screamed, Flans sang "I don't want to live in this world anymore." Ana Ng was done with no intro, and no count - they debated this on stage, and decided to "just vibe it," which worked pretty well (although they started out slightly out of sync) Spin the Dial didn't turn up any songs I recognised, but I'm sure I'll feel really silly when people tell me what they were. There were about 4 songs they tried to play. At the beginning of Robot Parade, Flansburgh tried to signal to someone named Dave to do something, but simply said "Dave." right before Linnell started playing, and Linnell commented "For this song I'm called Dave," a joke which came back a couple more times later. That's about it... well, all I can remember anyway. :) -- lawrence solomon * http://www.fruhead.com/users/zaph * zaph@fruhead.com "You knew it was true, when I held you, there were no secrets. Although some may insist otherwise, there have been no _confirmed_ TMBG references on the Simpsons, or Futurama for that matter (but don't let's start that debate again ). The confusion comes from the fact that TMBG borrow so heavily from common, everyday sayings that we are bound to see them in other places, too. And since some of the expressions they incorporate into their songs are relatively archaic (when was the last time you heard someone refer to a "bee in one's bonnet" or "whistling in the dark"?), it's easy to think that they came up with them, when in fact they've been around long before the Johns were even born. They just have a real gift for using these sayings in fresh and often unexpected ways. Date: Sun, 16 Apr 2000 14:13:38 -0400 Since there has been discussion about TMBG references, I thought I'd let you know that if you live in the Hopkinsville, KY area, you can see some. I have a friend who anchors the 9 and 10pm news on channel 43 in Hopkinsville. Lately he's been wanting to move on to bigger and better things, so he's really focusing on spicing his stories up and to do that, he's using TMBG lines for teasers and even in his reports. He used some lines from They'll Need A Crane last week during a story about something that was being demolished, and he's planning to continue using lines because he got so many comments on how good it was. I was so proud of him when he told me :) Amy :) [Attachment omitted, unknown MIME type or encoding (text/html)] ------------------------------ From: MrBean43@aol.com Message-ID: Date: Sun, 16 Apr 2000 14:57:27 EDT Subject: Re: TMBG: Real live TMBG references on TV!
