This October, a band called "The Seven Percent Solution" played. A week or so later, a band called "The Zero Effect" was scheduled. Now you can see the Kablam video of "Why Does The Sun Shine?". Did you miss "Brave New World" last year? See Dan Hickey battle the robot "Cog". See John and John as grunge rockers, as detectives, and as leaders of a hillbilly band, as they perform three original songs, in addition to "Older". Missed seeing TMBG on the Daily Show's millenium special? Now you can see and hear their goodbye song to endangered species. Didn't catch John Linnell and The Statesmen on tour? Now you can watch an in-store appearance! See not one, but two home-made versions of the "Fingertips" video--done by both "Women and Men"! See John Linnell sing "Montana" and TMBG sing "You're Not the Boss Of Me" on the Conan O'Brian show. If you have videos to trade, contact me privately at mailto:russj@tmbg.org (I'm still missing the other Kablam video.) If you have nothing to trade, then send me a check for seven US dollars to get a copy on high quality tape. Make it ten US dollars if you live outside of North America. The show was *great*! The audience was really psyched, and I think that's what made the show so good. Everyone was so glad to be there, and you could really tell. Flans even said something like, "You guys are kinda freaking us out up here." :) But the band must've liked the audience enthusiasm, because through the whole show they were really energetic, jumping all over the place and being very talkative and happy overall. Linnell was even jumping up and down while playing his keyboard during "The Guitar," which I'd never seen him do before. :) It was really different than the Bowery shows, where a lot of the people there have seen them 5 or 10 times before and are just kind of taking the show for granted (...or so it seems). Even though the bouncers at Avalon were a pain (they made me put my camera away and were chasing the crowd out the door the second the show ended at 9:50), I'd go to another show there in a second. As much as I love going to the Bowery shows, this kinda made me wish They'd play around a little more instead of just sticking with the same venue over and over. Also, I'm looking for bootlegs of the 4/20/00 and 11/09/00 Bowery shows. E-mail me off-list if anyone's interested in helping me out. It was my third They Might Be Giants concert (the other two being a show at Indiana University of Pennsylvania back in 1997, before I knew most of the songs, and the free Prospect Park show in August), and probably the best of the three, despite the technical difficulties. I went with my girlfriend, who has been to many more shows than I have, but still manages to enjoy every one (unlike certain people I could name). Here's what the band played: Robot Parade: Nothing special about they did it, but it's a great song anyway, so that doesn't matter James K. Polk: With the stick! Sorry, just wanted to see if you were paying attention. It was the confetti cannon. Minimum Wage: This was a surprise. I thought they worked the back-up band into it quite well. You're Not The Boss Of Me: John Flansburgh always seems to be smiling when he sings this one. Maybe he's thinking of the royalties he's getting for it, what with "Malcolm in the Middle" being shown twice a week. Fingertips: This was great live. Dan Miller sang the two "fingertips" parts, and the normally tedious ending bit about "darkened corridors" was actually fun to hear, with the band really getting into it. Your Mom's All Right: This was the first time I'd ever heard it. Sounds really good, although I don't really see why they'd put it on the "Malcolm" soundtrack. She's Actual Size: Not especially impressive, but I liked Dan Hickey's cowbell solo. I've Got A Fang: Kind of a silly song, but it makes a good live performance. Ana Ng: Some jerk decided that it would be a good idea to climb up on stage during this number, and Flans threatened to leave if anyone else pulled a stunt like that. The song itself was done quite well. Cyclops Rock: One of the best of TMBG's recent songs (if you can call it "recent" after two years). I hope it's released soon (and no, an MP3 on TMBG Unlimited doesn't count as a release in my book, any more than does a promo). Older: I often wonder why this song tends to get such a reaction from the audience. I mean, I like it, but, well, it's hardly the Johns' finest piece of work. Twisting: This song is just cool. Women And Men: Allegedly the first time it was ever played live. There was an annoying screeching noise at one point during it, but that wasn't enough to ruin the experience of hearing the song. The Famous Polka: Actually, I can't remember when this was played, but I know it was after "Women And Men." This was a change from the original setlist, but a welcome one. Flans let people near the stage strum his guitar. (Not being near the stage, I did not strum it.) They didn't sing the lyrics, but I've heard that this is normal for live performances. Hypnotist Of Ladies: A pleasant surprise. Yeah, I know they've been playing it at the New York shows, but I've been led to believe that they often won't play "special" songs like this at concerts outside of New York. It's Not My Birthday: The screeching noise returned, but the band wisely decided to start the song over, rather than just skipping it. This is one of my favorite TMBG songs. Spy: Do they have to do this one at EVERY concert? It takes too long, and is made up largely of random noise. This particular performance was okay, as far as "Spy" goes (it included Flans singing parts of Ace of Base's "The Sign"), but I still could have done without it. She's An Angel: Another one of my favorite songs. Lots of accordion, which is always a good thing. Drink: I really like this song, but not quite enough to subscribe to TMBG Unlimited Cost, so I hope they release it properly at some point. Particle Man: Yes, it gets too much attention, but it's still a pretty good live song. Flans and Miller played the solo parts on their guitars, and John Linnell brought back "The Sign" in between Person and Triangle Men. Doctor Worm: I don't really have anything to say about this one. The Guitar: This one, either, although it did include solos for all of the Dans. Birdhouse In Your Soul: I was thinking they wouldn't get around to playing this one, but they finally did. Why Does The Sun Shine?: I couldn't tell what they were playing until a few lines in, but then I recognized it. Gases on the Sun included copper wire, aluminum wire, silver wire, and jewelry-making pliers. Istanbul: By this time, I was about ready to leave, since I had to catch the last train out of town. I didn't have as much trouble as I might have expected in doing that, however, even though there was yet ANOTHER song after this one. New York City: Always fun to hear. All in all, it was a great show. The Johns really seemed to be in great form, despite the annoyances they suffered. (Maybe I have to attend more shows, so I can start hating them like a lot of other people here seem to.) -- Eat your broccoli, Nathan DinnerBell@tmbg.org http://www.geocities.com/fablesto/ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. I always liked the improv thing at the end of spy, particularly the version on the end of spy from the Why Does the Sun Shine single. OK, so musically it isn't pure TMBG brilliance, but the Johns have fun with it on stage, and its fun to watch when they're having fun. Perfect example was the show in NYC with the brass band, they were running around the stage, directing the brass section from offstage, with only one arm showing from offstage etc etc etc. Long live silliness with little point :) PRMega@aol.com wrote: > > << Spy: Do they have to do this one at EVERY concert?
