AugieWan has some awesome TMBG MP3s! This is a great collection. Why have you been hiding this from us, Augie? It even has Jonny Hart's (John Linnell) "Olive The Other Reindeer." I didn't even know that a recording of that existed any longer. This is the first time I've ever heard it! "I hate it" "I >>love it" "The band sucks but the song is cool" "I wish they'd stop playing > >the friggin Boss of me song." I'm going to show my age here, so everyone stand back (grin). Back in the early-mid 1980's, a couple of magazines called Rolling Stone and Spin ran articles on a cute new band called They Might Be Giants. At that time, MTV had picked up the video for "Don't Let's Start" and was playing it mostly late at night and on "120 Minutes". When the Lincoln lp came out, "Ana Ng" was in near-heavy rotation on MTV for awhile. It was a "Hip Clip of the Week" at one point, and I even remember hearing the song a few times on the radio. Of course, Flood was even bigger, and many people were introduced to They through "Istanbul" and "Birdhouse" videos. The bottom line was, none of this catapulted the Johns to international superstardom. Granted, the music industry has changed dramatically since then, and there are far fewer artists grabbing far more airtime and public awareness. But I think those people (the "big stars") are generally distinguished by being either a) plastic and beautiful, or b) publicly annoying and "outrageous" (woo hoo). The Johns are (thank God) neither of these, and I think their place as mid-level niche artists who appeal to a select few will remain secure, even if "Boss of Me" busts through and becomes an endlessly played radio and MTV hit. Or maybe I'm wrong and They will turn into the Barenaked Ladies and make Christmas albums with Brittney and Christina. That's what I meant. It's a good song, if not just because it's so delightfully odd, and at first, most people liked it. Then people heard it more and more, and whenever that happens, there's always a tendency for people to start feeling like they should hate it, and now I don't think anyone would believe somebody who said they were an Eiffel 65 fan. I'm just kind of scared that like other catchy pop hits, "Boss of Me" will cause the general public to cast off TMBG as lucky nobodies, and the only boost in album sales will come from a rash of fifth graders, the same rash that boosted Eiffel 65's sales. And when the kid's album comes out, those fifth graders will immediately rebel against Them. And then, we'll have rivers and seas boiling, and dogs and cats, living together--mass hysteria! _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ From: "General Purplefeet" Subject: Re: TMBG: lots o songs and stuff!
