Message-ID: <98443379001@escape.com> Dear People, I'm pleased to say that my show HEADFONE FOLLIES is being EXTENDED AGAIN! Great performers from Penny Arcade to Pamela Z will be in it. HEADFONE FOLLIES uses high-tech and headphones to make performers do raw amazing things, to a throbbing synchronized musical backup. Or as HERE is now calling it, it's "an experimental gibberish operatic suite." HEADFONE FOLLIES is now running every Saturday through April, all at 10:30pm, at HERE, 6th Avenue between Spring and Broome, New York City. That's March 17, 24, 31 and April 7, 14, 21 and 28. The FOLLIES is sort of a greatest-hits of 10 years worth of my headphone-driven pieces, which have been performed at Bang On A Can, Lincoln Center, in Eastern Europe, Amsterdam and Jerusalem, etc.--but only in bits and pieces, and, in the case of the centerpiece, HEADSET SEXTET, unfinished until now. Each week has a different cast, because each performer can do each part only ONCE. And I can't believe the incredible group of world-class performer-vocalist-actor-musician-dancers we've scheduled: Penny Arcade, Amy Baker, Eve Beglarian, Paul Boocock, Raquel Cion, Hope Clark, John Collins, Marissa Copeland, Georgia Corner, Kyle deCamp, Jonathan Feinberg, David Figueroa, Daphne Gaines, Rinne Grof, James Hannaham, Jan Leslie Harding, Cynthia Hopkins, Rohana Kenin, Aaron Landsman, David Letwin, Julian Maile, Linda Mancini, Ivan Nahem, Katherine Profeta, Sheridan Roberts, Tom Ross, Scott Sheperd, Taryn Smith, Susie Sokol, Jordana Toback, Vanessa Walters, Colleen Werthman, Pamela Z. Note also that HERE has a very nice cafe, and the show is little over an hour, so it's not really like a 10:30 show. It's like a 9:30 glass of wine plus a show. Information is at http://www.here.org ...but I'll post the specifics at the bottom. Over the past few weeks, the audience seems to have been building, and this past Saturday had people standing in the aisles. There was a nice review in the Village Voice (villagevoice.com, search for 'joshua fried') too. But most important to me in this long run are the small adustments I've been able to make and the ability of the crew to get everything just right. Now I can just sit in the audience and experience the material, and this is something I've waited to do for a long time. The show is nearly what I wanted it to be, and for me that's a very big deal. And I'm in love with the throng of performers--who wouldn't be? I'm excited about this and I wanted you to know. The performers have never heard these sounds before, and yet they are asked to reproduce the input *as it happens*--with every word, pitch and expression accurate and *no lag time WHATEVER*. This last requirement makes the task quite impossible and the result resembles a strange, dramatic and mostly indecipherable new language--even though the source material is, for the most part, plain English. Here and there an intelligible word or phrase emerges. In some sections, simple movement directives are added, electronic signal tones cueing the performers to listen for instructions. To preserve the necessary element of surprise, each performer can execute a given role only once. Mock-up tapes are used for auditions, training and rehearsal. Headphone-driven performance is not an improvisation. The compositions are highly structured; and yet there is not--and cannot be--a written score. Most of the input material is speech, not song, and much of it is highly dramatic. This work is characterized by highly organized interplay between performers and musical accompaniment. The accompaniment and all of the headphone parts come from a single 8-channel digital tape. Headphone-driven performance focuses attention on the present moment--no one knows what will happen next, and the performers can't afford to look back. The audience shares in the very real sense of tension and danger. Raw emotions become abstracted and aestheticized; vocal behaviors happen that would otherwise simply be unobtainable. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = HERE ART CENTERÁÁÁÁÁÁwww.here.org 212-647-0202 NYSCA + New York State Council on The Arts + State of the Arts = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = joshua@echonyc.comÁÁÁÁhttp://www.echonyc.com/~joshua ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2001 19:59:35 -0600 From: "Jay G." TMBG's good friend Graham is of course playing Bass with his older friend Joe, and he was phenomenal as always... was getting loads of applause even after Joe Jackson left the stage. My friend and I were actually giggling over Grahams's seemingly Flansburgh inspired inspired movements and Linnell inspired hair ;) But if you're a long time fan of Joe Jackson like I am, DO NOT miss this tour. If you're not a fan, shame on you... you don't know what you're missing. ------------------------------ End of tmbg-list Digest #39-13 ******************************
