Then again, I love the "new kind of kitten" intro, so there's that. It's not appropos of anything, is it? I mean, none of their titles have been before, but just in case there's some obscure Dial-a-Song I haven't heard that includes "mink car" somewhere in the lyrics, I thought I'd ask. Nope, it's new and absurd. Absurdity was their only recourse in naming this album, really. The songs have no unifying theme that I've been able to discern. The closest they get is the freakish elements of I've Got a Fang and Cyclops Rock, but two songs do not an album theme make. Perhaps it's a tip of the hat to "Object" by Meret Oppenheim. http://www.moma.org/exhibitions/objects/image1.html Bryce A furry hat. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 11:50:21 -0700 (PDT) From: Jason Fickley Subject: Re: TMBG: Re: Mink Car Message-ID: <20010416185021.22557.qmail@web13604.mail.yahoo.com> Comes out August 15. Well, Apollo 18 had sort of a "themed" title, even though very few of the songs related to it. Unless you don't know the difference between "noonch" and "snoochie boochies." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Apr 2001 00:19:08 From: "John Ferrer" Subject: TMBG: Mink Car: The 50's Album Message-ID: When I saw the message about the album name today, I thought it was horrible. Then as soon as I got offline and sat down to eat, I started gradually beginning to like it, and by the time I was done, I thought it was the best thing ever. Maybe it's just me, but the term "mink car" sounds very, very 50's to me. It causes visions of slick-haired, clear-faced teenage guys chomping giant handmade burgers at a drive-in restaurant. Flirting with the short-skirted blue-eyed blondes rollerskating from car to car with strawberry malts and extra fries. "Joe's Diner" blazing its neon-light logo in the clear blue horizon. Toes tapping to the latest beach-party Billboard hit. And suddenly, the album came together for me as a whole. Suddenly it's an album and not an official mix tape of Their newest songs. And suddenly it's the BEST ALBUM IN THE UNIVERSE! It's quite improbable that the Johns, or anyone else, actually made this connection, but that doesn't matter. For me, the album works now, and I'll share why for anyone who it might be able to help. A 50's theme is what ties this together. I kept picturing generic coolness as the theme, which is what I had in mind when I made album covers for Secret Mountain Labaratory. That wasn't right! 50's is right! Look at it! "She Thinks She's Edith Head" falls perfectly in. "It's So Loud in Here" works because the decade was obsessed with loud music. Isn't "Yeh Yeh" a cover of a 50's song? "Cyclops Rock" is a title that would have fit in perfectly, back when there were large leagues of people who simply sat around and thought up new words to place in front of the word "rock" for a song title. "I've Got A Fang" is similar to a lot of the novelty songs of the 50's. "Another First Kiss" is essentially a sappy romance song, except coolified by Flans's lyrical skills. "Bangs" I really don't think I need to explain. "Thunderbird" has a title connection. "My Man" I don't know anything about, but judging from the name, I think it will go in just fine. "Mr. Xcitement" may be stylistically pretty different, but it sort of has that cool style associated with those slick-haired teenage guys I mentioned. "Hovering Sombrero" would kind of fit in any decade except for the last two or three. And "Older" works because it almost seems like a warning song to the carefree, unambitious kids of that time period. I think "Wicked Little Critta," "Museum of Idiots," and "Unreliable Narrator" would all fit in well too, so I hope they're included. Anyways, don't get me wrong, I know that some of the things I've mentioned aren't straight from the decade, but I mean that it's all very fitting with the common ideas of the time that most people who weren't actually around for it have. The coolest thing is that all the songs are like that EXCEPT with an element of complete absurdity, which is still covered by the title. It's a twisted 50's album! Hurrah! I think it's an interesting spin on it, and now, despite all I've said about the song choices, I'm finally very excited about this. Not that that really changes anything, but hey. And by the way, nobody said anything about my Secret Mountain Labaratory covers. I thought they were pretty cool, so I'm going to be annoying and post the addresses again, in hopes that people just didn't go see them, and not that they did see them and were just too underwhelmed to say anything about them. Please, please, please check them out at http://www.geocities.com/zombiechef/secretmountainlabaratory-front.gif and http://www.geocities.com/zombiechef/secretmountainlabaratory-back.jpg and tell me what you think.
