Actually, yes. There has to be a reason why theyve never done it before (unless you count the themes) I seem to recall flans refering to what Andy Partirige said about title tracks seeming more important then they are and its true. I dont really CARE if they dare put a song on called Mink Car on the Mink Car album but since they've never done it before it is worht mentioning and discussing as we are doing here in what we like to call they TMBG discussion group. its wierd.. wierd like the cow sleeping with the chicken with the rooster almost home. And what you know, a review of a new CD by a cappella group The Bobs features this lead paragraph: >A cappella pioneers The Bobs are often categorized as a comedy >group. They're definitely funny, but don't buy Coaster expecting the >slapstick a cappella humor most of us are used to. ("Look, the fat >guy's singing Britney Spears!") The Bobs are more reminiscent of >They Might Be Giants than of Jim Carrey. If you want, you can simply >enjoy these songs for their quirky silliness. But if you take a >second look at the poetry, you'll find poignant characters, social >commentary, and a wry look at a cappella culture. A nice enough metaphor for They, right? Check out the whole review at http://www.rarb.org/reviews/222.html. Think I'm buying the CD. Wasn't it written about that same time? I'm pretty sure "Finished With Lies" pre-dates Severe Tire Damage. I seem to recall first hearing that and "First Kiss" around the same time. I think the interview in which Flans first mentioned UN was around the time that Long Tall Weekend was released, so there was presumably about a year in between those two songs being written. >I think it's an excellent fit. However, if there really is an >as-yet-unheard >song named Unreliable Narrator, I don't have a problem with that. :) Neither do I, unless we NEVER hear it. -- May the light shine upon thee, Nathan DinnerBell@tmbg.org http://www.geocities.com/fablesto/ _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 23:48:28 -0000 From: "Nathan Mulac DeHoff" Subject: Re: TMBG: Mink Car (the Song) Message-ID: Erich: > >If They call the song "Theme From Mink Car," will you feel better? > >Actually, yes. Really? I'd be interested in seeing when and in what context that comment was made by Flans, if it was ever actually said. By the way, although Andy might have mentioned this more than once, I read his comment on this topic in an interview from before the release of Nonsuch. (I think that, at the time, "The Last Balloon" was both a tentative title for the album, and a song that he had recently written. He said that, if the song ended up on the album, he wouldn't use that as the album title. It turned out that the song had to wait seven years for a release, and the title never WAS used for an album, but that's another story.) I agree with Andy's stance on title tracks, but that's no reason to assume that the Johns do. -- May the light shine upon thee, Nathan DinnerBell@tmbg.org http://www.geocities.com/fablesto/ _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 19:53:56 -0400 From: "The Demonic Kangaroo" Subject: Re: TMBG: "Unreliable Narrator" Message-ID: <9bntq8$5hi$1@ussenterprise.ufp.org> Organization: They Might Be Giants, Unofficially http://www.tmbg.org Of course I can't say when the orginial version of Finished With Lies was written, but the first live performance of it was on 11/6/97. -Mike "Nathan Mulac DeHoff" wrote > I'm pretty sure "Finished With Lies" pre-dates > Severe Tire Damage. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 20:18:54 EDT From: Film2Edit@aol.com Subject: Re: TMBG: Re: ultra-short pittsburgh review Message-ID: What is hopped up on coffee ana ng and TMBG marmalade?
