I'll be there.... So, again, I ask; who else is coming?! Richard >>> Matt James 12/06/01 16:17:37 >>> Right now, it's $1.38 to the pound. It has been no higher than $1.60/pound for as many years as I can remember. The ticket price is about $17.25 given the exchange rate, hardly "quite a deal". That's about an average price for a TMBG ticket these days. If I remember correctly, TMBG's last performance in London was at The Garage in Highbury/Islington. I've heard a lot of great bands going to Shepherds Bush Empire, I wonder how these 2 places compare? -Matt > > Hey, what's the exchange rate these days? Again, any true TMBG fan would >understand this and respect and love the song the way >that it is supposed to be. And how do YOU know what a true TMBG fan would do? Do you set the standards for this? Does a "true" fan have to like every single song the band does, and every decision they make? If someone doesn't like a new version of a song, why wouldn't they complain about it? I know there are some songs that I preferred in demo form ("Token Back To Brooklyn" comes to mind), and some where the band made some decisions for the album versions that I wish they hadn't made (lyrical alterations in "They Might Be Giants," over-embellishment of "Hope That I Get Old Before I Die" with random synthesizer sounds, removal of the big finish from "Kiss Me, Son Of God," etc.). Does this mean I'm not a true fan? Your comments do raise an interesting point, however. Is it a bad idea to hear demos before the album versions are finished? There are constant complaints about how finished songs aren't as good as the demo versions, and that probably ruins the enjoyment of these songs for some people. This doesn't mean that I'm going to stop calling Dial-A-Song or listening to demos in other forms, but perhaps people hearing the songs for the first time upon getting Mink Car will like them better than those of us who will be thinking how much better the demos were. -- May the light shine upon thee, Nathan DinnerBell@tmbg.org http://www.geocities.com/fablesto/ _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 15:50:27 EDT From: FreeMiniPops@aol.com Subject: TMBG: Happy Birthday, John! Someone already commented on "Siftin'", but I find "The Famous Polka" to be an even odder choice. What's sad about it? Perhaps the line "But when the phone inside her ribcage rings it's not for me" could be sad in the right context, but I don't think this song IS the right context. The song seems to me to be about those people who say, "Oh, I have SO much in common with [insert celebrity name here; it could even be one of the Johns]! Why won't he/she marry me?" It's a little too silly to be a sad song, I'd say. Then again, this is probably a good example as to how different fans view certain songs in different ways. -- May the light shine upon thee, Nathan DinnerBell@tmbg.org http://www.geocities.com/fablesto/ _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 14:25:22 -0600 From: "makebase" Subject: Re: TMBG: TMBG in the UK! I think some people like those better because they are unrefined, original, and raw. But Some of them I do like and some I don't. I like the studio recordings much more than demos. Probably because the same reason why I don't like Beta software. The final product has been refined and that is what they want you to hear. The demo is just an idea laid down on to tape. The studio cuts are what they want you to hear and what they feel sounds best to them. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 22:31:43 -0400 From: "Universe Man" Subject: TMBG: Anybody remember ambassadors? Among these bands are Powerman 5000, Elvis, System Of A Down, Bloodhound Gang, ICP, and...TMBG and Devo! I've typed out TMBG's article below, but if anyone wants me to type out any of the others, e-mail me. THEY MIGHT BE PLAYTHINGS Who can beat up these 'Giants'? Try Malcolm in the Middle. In the video for "Boss of Me," the theme song from FOX's Malcolm in the Middle, the band They Might Be Giants plays a set of action figures knocked around by Malcolm and his brothers. Toyfare caught up with frontmen John Linnell and John Flansburgh to find out what went on behind the scenes. Who came up with the idea for the "Boss Of Me" video? Linnell: This was a Fox production, so they picked the director and he cooked up the story. We just found out about it as it was developing, and we found out there were action figures, which sounded pretty good to us. Did you ever torture your toys as a kid like Malcolm and his brothers do in the video? Flansburgh: I definitely blew up my share of G.I. Joes. I think there's the tender age around 12 when the only thing you can do with those things is blow them up. I don't think I have any G.I. Joes left, so I think I must have gotten them all. Any interesting stories from the set of the video? L: We had enormous paint balloons thrown at us to simulate the family shooting paintballs at the action figures. If you freeze-frame the video - which we've done - you get to see the really painful shots of John and me getting seriously nailed with these balloons. There's one where it actually went right into my face. They Might Be Giants action figures. Good idea or bad idea? L: Always a good idea. Unfortunately, we didn't get the figures they used in the video. We had our eyes on them, and the guys actually said "no". It's a shame. F: I don't know if I'm up for being a personality like that; I'm better as a puppet master than a puppet figure. But I definitely got a kick out of seeing the prototypes in the Malcolm in the Middle thing. PR Mega ------------------------------ End of tmbg-list Digest #42-13 ******************************
