This one will most likely be closer in length to the 1996 one, since they'll presumably play from about 7:15 until about 8:45-9. and there's an article about them at http://www.fairfaxfair.com/Entertainment/performers.asp?ArtistID=100 and it's one of the best, most carefully researched articles I've ever seen of them. (the only error I noticed is that they refer to "Bangs," "My Man," and "Yeah Yeah" as "show-tested favorites.") but otherwise it covers all the important stuff, gets all the dates right and so on.... -- lawrence solomon * http://www.fruhead.com/users/zaph * zaph@fruhead.com "I stole your hat and I hanged your cat, so tell me how you love me now." But of course, the fiasco *before* that, involving a certain shoe goddess who shall remain nameless...well, yeah, that was bad. It seems en vogue to review the tracks, and I thought it sounded like fun. Everyone likes me, and I like everything. My Man Cute tune, and amusing subject matter (well.. disturbingly amusing). Ends up a little flat, though. Just seems like, you know, "a cute little song" in the vein of.. I guess.. Mammal. On the whole I dug it, but it didn't reach out to me and yell "YOU LOVE ME!!" as much as... Man, It's So Loud in Here This is going to get tons of flack from listees, I'm sure, just like "Another First Kiss" did, but as much as I loved the original (It's up there with "Thunderbird" and "On the Drag" in my esteem) I absolutely ADORE the new version. I was skeptical about the pseudo-eighties beats I heard going in, but.. jeez. This is just phenominal. This is possibly my favorite track ever released on Unlimited, and if it's indicative of all their new work, then I have five words for the Johns: MAISTRO! I SAY RIGHT ON! Yeah! Yeah! Being unfamilliar as I am with the original, it was still immediately obvious that John and John didn't write this song. I enjoy covers for the most part, (New York City springs readily to mind) but this isn't one of my favorites. I'm not bagging on it, I enjoyed it, and it may well grow on me, but on the album, it'll probably be frequently skipped over to get to.. Mink Car (With Jim O'Connor) Liked last month's a lot, this one slightly less so, partly because of one note early on, which Flansy doesn't appear to be able to hit very well. Not much different than the previous version, but the drums are nice. Last month's version, though, seemed a little.. hollow? But in a good way. hard to explain. Anyway, either version could go on the album without much kvetching from me. She Thinks She's Edith Head Let me preface this by saying that I've never been much of a fan of this song. I don't hate it, but I certainly don't understand flansy's apparent love of this song. In any case, the only difference is that it's a different vocal track. As far as I can tell, the instrumentation is exactly the same. I liked the old one better. The vocals on this one sound like Flans doing an impression of a depressed Linnell. So much so that I initally thought that it was Linnell singing. The bit at the end where Flansy normally goes berseker singing the line "She thinks she's Edith Head, she thinks she's Edith Head, now" is just absurd. I don't like this song, I hate this recording. If this song must be on the album, I really hope it's the older version from LTW. Anecdote Flansy is a funny man. I hope one day they put up the "TMBG Marmelade" banter from the Pittsburgh show this year. I'm Your Boyfriend, Now No idea why this won't be on the album. I love this song. Very sweet and nice, in the vein of "Narrow Your Eyes" or "I've Got a Crane." A silly little love song, and I like silly little love songs. I'd take it over Edith Head any day. Museum of Idiots (5 Piece TMBG) Not a big fan of this song in the first place. It's ok. Sounds better with the horns. North To Alaska I like this song. I've heard it before (off of TDK's site, I believe), and this is a good recording of it. Overall Some good, some bad. Clocking in at around 25 minutes, it's fairly long for an Unlimited (unless you count the ones that came with live shows, like last months at The Ritz and the Flood Show). On the whole, though, I think this is my favorite issue so far, mostly for the first three songs and "I'm Your Boyfriend." I can see the record starting to take shape. S'good. For the most part, Mink Car should end up as my favorite album, with such classics as "Finished with Lies," "Man It's So Loud in Here," "Mink Car" and "Another First Kiss." I'm just praying for the inclusion of "Thunderbird." That is all. -Sensurround -Still reeling from the news that On Earth My Nina is Thunderbird backwards. -Is upset that a backwards recording of On Earth My Nina is the closest he may ever have to a studio recording of Thunderbird -But is enjoying the backwards version he has of a live Thunderbird. Instrumation makes On Earth My Nina sound much better. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Jun 2001 22:45:49 -0700 From: Bongo Subject: Re: TMBG: Re: Ambassador T-shirts, Legality of Message-ID: <3B206689.EEC0432C@pacificnet.net> Kaylum@aol.com wrote: > Legalities aside, didn't y'all learn your lesson from the last > list-related > t-shirt fiasco? > > Kay But Bryce has proven that a t-shirt project CAN work. Okay, here's another thing: What if the folks who owned the rights to the movie "They Might Be Giants" wanted to make a t-shirt with the title on it. Are they not allowed because the Johns copyrighted the idea of putting those words on a shirt, coffee mug, mouse pad, etc.? I haven't been following this thread since the beginning so maybe someone mentioned this already: What about Don Quixote? I've never read it but I believe the english translation contains that actual phrase. Don Quixote is public domain. Even if TMBG has made the phrase unique by using it as their band name, don't we have the right to use it in an editorial context? These shirts aren't just going to say. "They Might Be Giants". And what about poor William Allen White? Did TMBG ask his estate before they turned his head into a sort of trademark for their band? But most importantly, as I said before, I really don't think anyone is going to care.
