Long time viewer short time writer here :-) Anyway, although Mink Car hasn't been released in England yet, I spent twenty quid on amazon to make sure I got it in three days. And I did :_) Since I have willpower (actually, I just couldn't get on Emusic) I hadn't heard most of the songs on this album, so it was completely new to me. So what do I think? First of all, I was kinda hoping Boss of Me and I'm the subsitute now (dunno why I thought that, but there you go) would be on, but oh well. First off: Bangs ~ Very Factory Showroom-esque, and bares most resemblance to earlier TMBG. V. Good. Cyclops Rock ~ Personally I love it. Kind of upbeat, in a rockin sort of way :-) (yes, that did make sense) Man, It's So Loud in Here ~ when I first heard this on the radio, I was disgusted. What had they done, turning this into some kind of Pet-Shop-Boy's reject song?! But, I grew to love it. Personally I think the drum-beat is still a bit heavy though. Mr Xcitement ~ I hate it. Not because it's different (it kinda reminds me of something from Miscelleneuous T) but because it's so much like those soings MTV Play. Irritating Rappy songs :-) I can see why this caused so much stir. Another First Kiss ~ I never really liked STD's version much anyway, but I was fearing they'd rappify it. Instead they just slowed it down. Yes, it does seem like Flans is trying to really make his voice reach the roof. Better than the original IMO. (maybe that just stems from the fact I never listened to it on STD anyway when I first got into the band, I was always putting Ana Ng back on :-)) I've got a Fang ~ Reminds me of 'Window' from JH. Neat song. "Girlfriend took me to meet her Mom. Her head exploded like an atom bomb." Hovering Sombrero ~ Nice song. Not the best by a long way, but good to listen to. Yeh Yeh ~ I thought I recognized that title :-) I mean, how can you not sing along whilst listening this song? Hopeless Bleak Despair ~ The beginning of this song always reminds me of Fingertips for some reason. I like it. Drink ~ Heard it first on the Johnathon Ross show. Didn't like it then. It's better on the album. Whoever said it reminded them him of the Pogues, I kinda agree. My Man ~ Factory Showroom-esque. Again not the best song, but it's good. (yes, descriptive aren't I?) Older ~ I've heard alot of versions in my time. This version might actually be the best. When I first heard it I thought it was ridiculous, but it's grown on me. The beginning makes it sound kind of creepy. Mink Car ~ Ahh, the alternative theme to Cheers! Personally, I don't like it much. Wicked Little Critta ~ Nope. Don't like it. Not the people shouting the title, nor the scratching in the background. And just what it a pissa? Finished With Lies ~ Ahhh. Nice upbeat song :-) She Think's She's Edith Head ~ Not my kinda thing. Hmmm. I can't quite put my finger on it somehow.. WUCFTM ~ Not what I expected this song to sound like! Nice though. Overall: If you got tired of my undescriptive review, then you might just want to look here. Not the best. I really can't say any TMBG album was bad. If I had to say which one I didn't like as much, this might just be it. But it's still a very good album. Now get it now! *Note. Upbeat may differ from your interpetation. Anyway, since TMBG came to Londen whilst I was in France (!!) I'm making up for it in November. Maybe I should try and get my albums signed. I burned a copy from the EMusic MP3's the first day they made them available, and I've probably listened to it maybe fifteen times up to yesterday, when I got the real CD. So here's my review of how it's held up over time. To refresh your memory, I was pretty mixed before. I hated a lot of it, I loved a lot of it, I was lukewarm to a lot of it. That's actually my main problem with the album, and it's only gotten worse. I think it's way too disjointed. Variety is good, but a little bit of organization is needed. They used way too many different producers and I can actually tell which songs match with the other ones during each session. It's more like a badly made compilation album from five different CD's. The track order is HORRIBLE. Songs like "Drink" and "Sombrero" get screwed over because of placement, and it just generally needs to be rearranged. "Bangs" This song is the most noticably better of the CD versions over the MP3's. Sounds much livelier. The cool thing about this song, is that if you want, it can be unobtrusive background music, but if you wanna rock out to it, you can. It's fantastic, and it's gotten only better over time. "Cyclops Rock" I never really liked this song when it was live-only, but I think it might have become my favorite on the album. Gets better every time. This has to be one of the most rocking songs of the year. I honestly couldn't fathom a better version of it. "Man, It's So Loud In Here" I loved it at first, but once the novelty of the dance music wears off, it's just kinda there. I agree with it being the first single, and I'm not saying it's not a freaking amazing song, but I have actually skipped it once or twice because it's so long. "Mr. Xcitement" It was really interesting to see people's reactions to this one. It seems like everyone who doesn't really like the album mentions that this and Critta are the worst songs on it. Yet I don't really like the album and those are my two favorites. No change on this song, except that it's obviously not as fascinating once you know what's he's saying. Stuck in my head constantly. "Another First Kiss" Another one I'm weird on. The few people that like Xcitement and Critta also like this one. Well, I hate it. It's the worst thing they have ever done. It doesn't disgust me anymore, because I honestly don't even notice it was on until it's over, but it's just horrible. Just because it's listenable and pleasant means nothing. The radio is frequently listenable and pleasant, it doesn't mean Faith Hill isn't the devil. I would never ever want anyone who didn't know TMBG to hear this song. It's HORRIBLLLLLLLLLE. Now, that said, it's completely forgivable. You can never accuse them of being pigeonholed, and most bands do crappy love songs like this all the time. We've been lucky. 'Sall good! "I've Got A Fang" When I first heard the Unlimited version, I thought it was the stupidest song ever. I really don't know what I was thinking. It's great. I like parts of the Unlimited version better, parts of this better. Mostly I just like the live version. The cymbal part is still kind of stupid. As much as I like the new weird bridge, I liked the old weird bridge better. However, on the good side, the last little bit of the song is mind-blowingly good, and there wasn't much to the original ending. Hey, look, this song review has been about as discombobulated as the album. "Hovering Sombrero" Again, this was really screwed by putting it in between "Fang" and "Yeh Yeh," two very fast, attention-grabbing songs. This is such an amazing song on its own, but it doesn't follow up "Fang" well. It should have been put between "Hopeless Bleak Despair" and "Drink," both of which match it stylistically. "Yeh Yeh" There's no way you can help being a little rocked by this song, just because of its sheer speed and cheerfulness, but that doesn't mean I like it. It's just too silly. Another one I wouldn't want a non-fan to hear, because it perpetuates the myth that they're some kind of Weird Al wannabes. Usually, their pointless songs make up for the lack in lyrical content with the music. I mean, "Istanbul," for example, another cover, is musically one of the finest things they've done. This song has nothing. It sounds just like the original, and it's stupid. "Hopeless Bleak Despair" Christ, this song has confused me. In my first review, I completely butchered it. Now I just have no opinion. The more I think about it, the more my thoughts on it will become LIES! And nobody likes a LIAR! "Drink!" Maybe I'm thinking way too much, but I also think this song could be benefited after TWO sadder songs than one. I'm telling you man, "Sombrero" belongs before this track. "My Man" Another one that I completely loved but it wore off after a while. I still love it, but it's definately easy to be overplayed. "Older" I think this version is really cool, but the other day I listened to LTW for the first time in a long time, and I had forgotten how great that one is. Oh well. It has gotten better over time though. "Mink Car" Also really easy to overplay. I love it to death, it's stuck in my head a lot, but every once in a while, I find myself going damn, that's really annoying. I know that's the point but...oh, never mind, it's fantastic. "Wicked Little Critta" Awesome song. This is all my friends' favorite, oddly enough. I do agree with everyone about the end though. I don't like the explosion of drums, and I hate the way Flans says "I got problems." The whole song is completely insane, and it really should be terrible, but somehow it succeeds. WICKED LITTLE CRITTA! "Finished With Lies" What a stupid song. Ugh. I guess I don't mind it as long as I don't pay much attention it. The music is horrible and the words are worse. "She Thinks She's Edith Head" I've really grown to like this. And I have yet to not laugh when Linnell says "I ate a bug." "Working Undercover for the Man" Another one I've sort of lost an opinion on. I've probably heard it more than anything else on the album, so I've sort become immune to its charms. Don't ever notice it's on, even when I'm singing along. There you go. It's got some good songs obviously, because it's TMBG, but it's not as good as it could be. And there's at least two albums this year (Cake's Comfort Eagle and Tenacious D) that I like better. Oh, I put a review of it in my school paper. It was much nicer because I would never publish unkind words about the They. I might scan it some time for my own enjoyment. -- "Eat the cheeseburger, Astroboy!" _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ End of tmbg-list Digest #46-1 *****************************
