As some of you may know, I (sort of) moderate the private aol chatroom devoted to TMBG known as Cowtown. This chatroom has a lot of history associated with it for me because it was the first online TMBG community I discovered back in 1995. Cowtown was by far the friendliest and liveliest TMBG chat I'd ever participated in, but lately, due to many people moving or switching serivice providers, attendance has, sadly, been very low. I would hate to put an end to it, but unless more people show an interest in joining us, I may have to. So, if you're on aol and think you can make it on Wednesday nights beginning at 9pm est (which has always been the traditional night and time for Cowtown), drop me an email and I'll add you to the Cowtown reminder list. Hope to hear from you soon! :) Kay [Attachment omitted, unknown MIME type or encoding (text/html)] [Attachment omitted, unknown MIME type or encoding (multipart/alternative)] ------------------------------ From: "AugieWan" Subject: RE: TMBG: what you like from emusic Date: Tue, 13 Nov 2001 11:36:13 -0500 Message-ID: Apples in Stereo are really good in my opinion... For my part, I'd like to recommend Laura Cantrell's excellent Not the Tremblin' Kind. I especially loved the songs Queen of the Coast and The Way It Is. Amy Rigby's The Sugar Tree was a great discovery (Rode Hard is my fave song from there.) And of course, Elvis Costello. Thanks guys! They're the best non-TMBG band on EMusic in my opinion. EMusic has lots of their stuff, but I do need to warn you. If you checked Ween out based on TMBG fan recommendations and found them revolting, these guys are much much worse. They play characters, such as gay folk-singing brothers or singing slaves (they use blackface in concert for this) and it can be very...um...offensive. Not in a John Valby way, but in a brilliantly twisted way. Or to people in the future who want it and are willing to pay but it no longer exists? Would it be valid for somebody (read: me) to take responsibility for trying to fairly accomodate these people? Would it even be appropriate to sell the unlimited set in the future and forward the proceeds to TMBG? My assumption is that emusic has not archived all this stuff anymore? If they have somebody let me know... but I do indeed have it all (I am pretty sure, I would have to crosscheck with a couple people) including some bonus tracks from before unlimited and I feel for somebody who lost it all (cause it could potentially happen to me if I don't back it up)... Anyway, if people want to yell and scream thats fine but I think that making like a CD-ROM with all the emusic stuff and then distributing it in some organized fashion to people who paid for unlimited and/or want to pay in the future could be a good idea... I guess we would have to define the cost for future people cause $120 or whatever is a bit absurd... hm Any thoughts? in terms of Kate: I can work something up for you... let me check with a couple people and make sure I have everything organized... Although I am usually slow with stuff like this and busy this week... but yeah, hmm... curious what people think.... -- Jish TMBG.net and the EFnet #TMBG Home Page http://www.tmbg.net/ "If you and I had any brains, we wouldn't be in this place" - John Linnell On Tue, 13 Nov 2001, Kate Sith wrote: > Okay, bad stuff has recently happened to my computer, and I lost ALL issues > from this WHOLE year of TMBG Unlimited (among other things). I think it's going to have to be up to each person to burn their own CD; anyone who offers to do it for people opens themselves up to legal trouble. However, I think we should come up with an unofficial tracklist of just the not-Mink-Car-nor-McSweeneys tracks, give it the title Secret Mountain Laboratory, and use the cover art that John Ferrer came up with. It said please allow 3 - 7 days for shipping.. but alas it came today! I will review it. Like most people I have already heard the whole thing, but I really like the packaging. I'm really glad they put the elves in the inside cover booklet. I was hoping they would use the elves cover when I saw the chopping block pictures. On the back cover there are two elves loading things into the back of a van heheh. I know people are upset that this is all perviously released stuff but I like it. It is a neat cd. If you are a cover art fan like I am, I would suggest picking it up. I should also mention that it comes with a sticker on the plastic wrap that says To: From: and They Might Be Giants. And > even if you exclude all of those things, that's still going > to be a lot more than one CD, isn't it? Yes, it would be, so we'd have to discuss the tracklist and decide what to include. There are basically two approaches we could take: sound quality or uniqueness. If fidelity is a priority, it might include the Mink Car demos. If uniqueness is a priority, it probably wouldn't, but would include most of July. But actually, why stop at one disc? We could do at least three discs with this material. Secret Mountain Laboratory could be the hi-fi demo collection, with: - Mink Car demo - I've Got a Fang demo - Cyclops Rock demo - Drink demo - Bangs demo - Your Mom's Alright - Oranges - I'm Your Boyfriend Now - Shooting Star - Clowntown - Monsters of Mud - Tigerella - All MacGuyver On It - Ram On - Theme from Unlimited - To the Bubblecraft! Then a "best of the crypt" album, for which somebody would come up with an excellent title out of the blue. It could have: - Concrete and Clay - Sally Boy Candy Bar - Kings of the Cave - Outboard Part of Man - Sonebody's Body - Hi, Honey, I'm Home ...You get the idea. The third disc would be based on the Battle of the Bands theme, also with a kickass title conveniently provided by someone more creative than I am right now. :) It should also include Ultimate Battle for the Planet of the Apes, in keeping with the theme of conflict. So, what do you think? If y'all aren't interested, I'll probably do it this way myself eventually anyway.
