Does anyone think that in the Song of the 50 States, the ending(which sounds like bars from Arkansas to me)means that Arkansas is his favorite one? It does go into the song right after he says, for the last time, that he can't wait for his favorite one. Is this something you know for certain, or is it just a guess? If you know it, where did you get this information? By the way, did you include "We Love All The People" or "Number Three"? The former is pretty obscure (it's an old Dial-A-Song), but it qualifies. The latter isn't specifically about ROCK music, I suppose, but it's certainly about music. I always thought of it in terms of comparison, "as happy as," which I then understood to say that he's not really happy at all. Now that you mention it, though, having become a scarecrow (even if it's only in metaphor) fits even better. Not that that changes whether or not he's actually happy. I still see the song as a kind of pouty "oh, yeah? well who needs you anyway?" reaction. I think I derive this impression almost completely from the lazy pace of the song, though; the music seems to linger wistfully, in spite of what the lyrics are saying.
