All Rights Reserved. I love you. You love me." Barney meant well but, really, how long could parents possibly put up with that gibber jabber? His days may be numbered, thanks to a spate of hip rockers, most with kids of their own, who are recording children's music that's--clap your hands!--worth a listen. "Children's music has always been this barren wasteland of hackdom," says John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants, whose kid collection, "No!", topped Billboard's children's chartlast week. Artists like Dan Zanes, the former Del Fuegos frontman who has featured Sheryl Crow and Suzanne Vega on his kids' albums, have given the genre credibility that it's lacked. So have singers like Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, who has sung for kids--including his own--at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music. "I grew up with traditional children's music, folk music," says Zanes. "I assumed there would be this updated version." Rescuing this music isn't an entirely weighty project. Sara Hickman's got a song, "Goops," about her daughter's first eye booger. -- Karen Springen ------------------------------ From: "Nathan Mulac DeHoff" Subject: Re: TMBG: Re: Write the Boston Globe for their pathetic review of NO! All of the EP's were technically "studio releases," after all. It might be appropriate to call it the eighth studio ALBUM, though, since Misc. T wasn't really planned as an album (and I don't think Long Tall Weekend was, either). > > But unless you want your kids to turn out like David > > Lynch or "Weird Al" Yankovic, this isn't a children's record. > >Of course it isn't. It's been 16 years since the first album, though. I think reviewers should do as much research as possible, but I don't necessarily think it's required for them to know how long a band was playing in dives and releasing demos before putting out an album. >(Fuck you.) You like to say that, don't you? >Yeah, so they like it. Great. Unfortunately, they sound like idiots while >doing so, and, if anything, discourage purchase. They discourage purchase for kids, but seem to encourage it for TMBG fans (who are probably going to buy it anyway, so there isn't much point in that). And yes, they sound like idiots, but they're MUSIC CRITICS. Does this somehow SURPRISE you? >I think I'll be writing them. Go ahead, but if you expect them to pay any attention, I'd leave out the "fuck you"s. -- Be your own broom, Nathan DinnerBell@tmbg.org http://www.geocities.com/fablesto/ _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com ------------------------------ End of tmbg-list Digest #55-2 *****************************
