Just spent a week in Rehoboth Beach, which is great, but I had to leave just a few days before They played a show in very nearby Dewey Beach. I'm headed to Cleveland tomorrow for school-related matters, making both the Harrisburg (just two hours from my Williamsport, PA home) and the 20th anniversary show in NYC very un-reachable. Cleveland hasn't showed up in upcoming tour dates, either. I had a few sets of plans to get to civilization and see Gigantic sometime this summer, but none of those worked out quite well. Anyway, that's just me whining about not getting to see They Might Be Giants or other fun TMBG-related stuff. But here's the super-cool thing. I walked downstairs today, and Mike Leffel asked me if I'd read the TMBG article in The New Yorker. (Honestly, it was my sister, but it would've been pretty sweet if it was Mikey L.) Anyway, what you really, really need to do is go to your local newstand and buy the current The New Yorker. You'll find a Michael Azerrad article that is titled some combination of "Onward And Upward With The Arts," "Urban Legends," and "The do-it yourself success of They Might Be Giants." It spans five pages, including a nifty full-color half-page photograph. It's pretty obviously written by a fan, but I'm pretty sure it's the best article I've ever read on the band. This is the August 12, 2002 issue, with some orange, pink, and blue overhead drawing of people at a picnic, and allow me to repeat - You Must Buy This. In related news, I was haphazardly checking to see if the article was online, and I ran across this - http://music.barnesandnoble.com/ontheCharts/style.asp?userid=54UB0HT8N4&vcqty=1&PID=2009 I'm not sure at ALL what defines this "Alternative" genre, but all I see is No! atop a list, followed by The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Korn, No Doubt, David Bowie, Oasis, Jimmy Eat World, The Hives, Wilco, and Tom Waits. Neat... And of course- Dylan "Take that, Korn!" Flipse Dylan Flipse - dylan@flipse.com - www.flipse.com "You're very strange," she said. "No, I'm very ordinary," said Arthur, "but some very strange things have happened to me." -From The Restaurant at the End of the Universe ------------------------------ From: Gegatron@aol.com Message-ID: <19b.6c23868.2a871716@aol.com> Date: Sat, 10 Aug 2002 21:25:42 EDT Subject: TMBG: blargh? At work today i was busy putting away CDs (i work at a Coconuts in Chicago) when i heard a song that sounded kinda familiar. I look up and see an average big budget video of some band i didn't recognize... then the credits came up. It was OK Go! When the hell did they get so big? I guess they signed to some big label who really wants to publicize them. They were pretty decent for a TMBG opener but for someone to sink so much money into them is beyond me. The song was pretty catchy though. ------------------------------ Message-ID: <000a01c240e0$c13eb740$7a8d570c@fireline> From: "john m" Subject: TMBG: Re: blargh?
