Yeah, we had this discussion when the track list was first released, and I agree that an actual Dial-a-Song CD would really rock. However, I must take exception to your characterization of Rhino as "corporate and mundane". They've done some impressive stuff in the past, including releasing compilations from bands that otherwise wouldn't have gotten much mainstream attention. And their re-releases of older albums from established artists are superb, always including bonus tracks that add a lot to the original release (see Bowie, Elvis Costello, etc...). Maybe this particular effort is just a panacea for the masses, but don't give up on Rhino -- they may put something together for us "real fans" yet. How much of the general public would is another story, but I see no reason why they couldn't sell it through the Info Club, like they did with They Got Lost (and it would probably sell better than They Got Lost, too). While I'm glad to have Then, I didn't have the pink album, Lincoln, or Miscellaneous T at the time I bought it. For someone who already owned those three albums, I'm sure Then looked like a bit of a rip-off. The incredibly low number of rare and unreleased tracks on this collection means there really isn't any reason for a hardcore fan to buy this, unless they're of the collecting persuasion. As for new fans, it seems like a decent mix of material, although John Henry is ridiculously underrepresented, and there aren't enough B-sides.
