Stop clogging my inbox with real posts! I'm trying to keep up on the latest spam. but really... << Why the sudden change of heart do you think? >> Could be because change and trying new things seem to be integral ideals of the band. Then there's also the trend of trying to stretch every song as far as it will possibly go and using it anywhere possible to fill in the spaces...in this case including the album name. But change is just a big part of them...everything they do is consistently changing. That gives us variety in the music and new formats as well...which could be argued as good or bad (dial-a-song being intrinsically good of course). That's what I thought...as well as thinking it might have been pretty much random for the most part and maybe only recognized by them but not altered. *shrug* Or they might have been totally hooked on Mink Car and they just couldn't drive it (ha) from their heads...so they had to make it the album name. But I'm still voting for the fact that they figured a change was welcome. I'm not sure what this post is in reply to, but I do know that Mink Car was the proposed title of the album before it was a song. Flans says his wife suggested "Our Wives Want Mink Cars" for the album title, and he shortened it, and then wrote a song to go with it. -- Be your own broom, Nathan DinnerBell@tmbg.org http://www.geocities.com/fablesto/ _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ From: Subject: Re: TMBG: Re: lack of tmbg-list Digest Date: Thu, 10 Oct 2002 22:31:52 GMT Message-Id: disclaimer: no one should feel obligated to read the the story that follows. there aren't enough details in it. the following is a sad story: i went to my local borders, a lovely and well decorated store. i had $45.00 in my pocket, the most money i had had in a very long time. therefore, i felt obligated to spend it. borders seemed the best place to do so. i was drawn immediately to the music section of my local borders, as i enjoy music very much. excitedly, i picked up a (very cheap) copy of the brand new, exciting okgo album (which, by the way, is fantastic; everyone should purchase it right away). i then found an album by Nerf Herder, a band that i am seeing next month and therefore thought that it would be worthwhile to purchase one of their albums. at this point, i used my unusually amazing skills in mathematics to deduct that the items i held in my hand would cost approximately $21.00, with a little more for tax. having nothing to do, i headed over to the THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS section, as i always do, for i happen to enjoy said band, and like looking at the cds in their section. it took me a while to find this section, for the music section in this borders had changed a little bit, so the they might be giants section was a little bit further to the left than it had been in the past. the first thing i saw was: the dial-a-song anthology. it was pretty beautiful. it was not in the they might be giants section. someone had moved it to the "THE THE" section, by accident, i assume. i picked up the dial-a-song anthology. i read the back. i marveled. i yearned to read the essay by sarah vowell. i wished to see the exciting new pictures included. i looked at the price tag, which prominently said "... well, i don't remember exactly, but it was definitely over thirty dollars. i looked again at the track listing. i said to myself, "shit, i already have all of this. i refuse to spend thirty dollars on it! i want these other cds, and i only have $45.00!" i looked at that dial-a-song anthology, so inaccurately and cruelly named, and i put it down. i carefully noted the other albums by they might be giants that were currently in stock in my local borders, paid for my okgo album and my Nerf Herder album, and i exited the store. the end. jessie. > Peoples! > > Has the SPAM scared everyone away? > Or is everyone caught in a trance listening to the new album? > > Is it out yet? - I haven't seen nor heard anyone talk about it in the > persent or past tense.. just that they weren't going to buy it when it came > out... > ------------------------------ From: "Nathan Mulac DeHoff" Subject: Re: TMBG: Re: lack of tmbg-list Digest Date: Thu, 10 Oct 2002 23:11:45 +0000 Message-ID: Lauren Roache: >Has the SPAM scared everyone away? >Or is everyone caught in a trance listening to the new album? > >Is it out yet? - I haven't seen nor heard anyone talk about it in the >persent or past tense.. just that they weren't going to buy it when it came >out... What new album? I guess you mean the anthology, but I wouldn't really call that an album. Really, since we've all heard the songs already, there wouldn't be much to say about it, except maybe how it all fits together. This list HAS been pretty dead recently, though. I remember a time when there were always a lot of posts, even when TMBG wasn't doing anything. >Hmm... I noticed a while ago that TMBG didn't name their albums after any >of the songs included. I thought that was creative of them, and then came >Mink Car... Why the sudden change of heart do you think? Well, I already answered this (for some reason, I got the reply before the original message), but Mink Car was actually a song named after the album. No! also has a title song, and, although I've seen no official word on this, I would imagine it was pretty much the same deal (album title first, and then a song to go with it). Both of the Mono Puff albums have the same titles as songs on them, though (well, pretty much; there's no "I Hit My Head" in the title of their first album). -- Be your own broom, Nathan DinnerBell@tmbg.org http://www.geocities.com/fablesto/ _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ Message-Id: <5.1.0.14.0.20021010180430.00a1a500@pop-server.houston.rr.com> Date: Thu, 10 Oct 2002 18:06:04 -0500 From: Quinn Collard Subject: Re: TMBG: Re: lack of tmbg-list Digest >This list HAS been pretty dead recently, though. I honestly don't know why some people make such a big deal out of it (not saying you were, but when the Mink Car title and track list were announced, I remember a few people sounding genuinely upset that it would have a title track). Kay [Attachment omitted, unknown MIME type or encoding (text/html)] Lauren Roache : > Has the SPAM scared everyone away? > Or is everyone caught in a trance listening to the new album? No and no, in my case at least. Real life is kind of sucking for me at the moment, meaning I haven't had much time to clutter the list with my usual tripe. However, the recent suction of life has forced me to retreat into some TMBG-related side projects, including my online lyrics archive which was in bad need of a bug fix and is about to get a new feature too. > Hmm... I noticed a while ago that TMBG didn't name their albums > after any of the songs included. I thought that was creative of > them, and then came Mink Car... Why the sudden change of > heart do you think? I personally think that No! is just the perfect name for the album, regardless of the fact that there's a song on there by that title, so it might as well just be coincidence. As for Mink Car, I think its borrowed name is just a symptom of the album's more general identity crisis. If it were a more cohesive collection, there could be something there to draw a more interesting name from. That said, I don't think that using a song's title for the album is necessarily a bad thing; I think Factory Showroom is an even emptier album title than Mink Car. But then, they can't all be John Henry. ;) Bryce From owner-tmbg-list@tmbg.org Thu Oct 10 19:56:34 2002 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by ussenterprise.ufp.org (8.11.1/8.11.1) id g9ANuYm67676 for tmbg-list-outgoing; Thu, 10 Oct 2002 19:56:34 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from owner-tmbg-list@tmbg.org) Received: from smtp.mailix.net (smtp.mailix.net [216.148.213.132]) by ussenterprise.ufp.org (8.11.1/8.11.1) with ESMTP id g9ANuYa67671 for ; Thu, 10 Oct 2002 19:56:34 -0400 (EDT) (envelope-from bryce@tmbg.org) Received: from [10.0.0.101] (helo=calcium) by smtp.mailix.net with smtp (Exim 4.01) id 17znAP-0008FQ-00 for tmbg-list@tmbg.org; Thu, 10 Oct 2002 16:56:33 -0700 Received: by calcium (sSMTP sendmail emulation); Thu, 10 Oct 2002 19:56:33 -0400 Received: from 208.22.73.21 ( [208.22.73.21]) as user bryceland.com@bryceland.com@mailix-imap.frontend by webmail.namezero.com with HTTP; Thu, 10 Oct 2002 19:56:33 -0400 Message-ID: <1034294193.3da613b165fba@webmail.namezero.com> Date: Thu, 10 Oct 2002 19:56:33 -0400 From: Bryce To: tmbg-list@tmbg.org Subject: Re: TMBG: lack of tmbg-list Digest MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit User-Agent: Internet Messaging Program (IMP) 3.0 X-Originating-IP: 208.22.73.21 Sender: owner-tmbg-list@tmbg.org Precedence: bulk Reply-To: Bryce Jessie : > disclaimer: no one should feel obligated to read the the story > that follows. there aren't enough details in it.
