They Might Be Giants played at Starr Hill Restaurant and Brew Pub on September 24, 2004. Poor you. I was nearly on top of the elevated stage, crammed close enough to report with confidence that Mr. Flansburgh's molars number 13, 14, and 15 contain impressive fillings and that his forearms have no hair. Ah, more detail than you needed? Yeah, me, too. Ick. Let me pull back a bit. Starr Hill Music Hall in Charlottesville is SRO for about 300, with a cramped wooden stage tucked into one corner, and a bar in the opposite corner. I can't speak to the sound quality in the back, but up front at full volume the music reverberated in the corner and tended to obscure the vox. No venue is perfect, of course. Opener was Corn Mo, an accordion-playing comedian, who was fun to watch and got the crowd to sing Queen's "We Are the Champions." He sang dirty songs about being in high school, which are probably more accessible if you're nearer that age, as a number of the audience were. Had I been packing any hairpins, I would have offered them to him - part of his shtick is his long blond hair, which flowed everywhere. Corn Mo is not for everyone, but I enjoyed his comedic efforts, and he has a decent voice. I loved his accordion, which had an all over Liberace-esque pearlescent finish. They Might Be Giants didn't take the stage until 11 o'clock, by which time the crowd was good and liquored up and my friend Shelley and I complained to each other that our feet hurt. Did I mention we were two ladies on a Friday night road trip to recapture lost youth? I thought that an 80's band playing at a bar a few blocks from U.Va would be the ticket to feeling 20 again. Shelley probably knew better, but being a kind friend, she tactfully let my aching back give me the bad news after two hours of standing waiting for the Main Attraction. I was unprepared for the total visual treat of seeing them so close. Mr. Flansburgh is incredible to watch, a chunk of bouncy energy in plaid - jumping, twirling, falling to one knee while grinding something out on the guitar. He also drove the jolly on-stage patter that really added to the experience. The mark of a good showman is not just being prepared, but being able to extemporize to cover the flubs, of which there were a few. They nearly brained Flansburgh twice with the microphones, al la Three Stooges. You can tell Mr. Flansburgh and Mr. Linnell have been doing this for twenty years, because the repartee was practiced and easy. I can't remember all the songs in the actual set plus two tasty sincere, stomping, hooting encores, but a few of the most impressive were: Drink. This worked for the drunken revelers in the audience as a drinking song (audience was instructed by Flansburgh to chant "Drink-Drink" when he sang "Drink.") and as irony for those of us not drunk. This might have been the song where Flansburgh tells us that the audience part was in 6/8 time, or maybe double 3/4 time, or one quarter 1 and 3/4 time or... at which point he trailed off and the audience laughed. New York City Experimental Film (Note to concert goers: Not sure if this was his usual, but here Mr. Linnell had an on-stage habit that might throw you if you're used to the more traditional middle-distance gaze of theater performers - he looks around blankly at individual audience members in the front rows in little three second stare-fests while he's playing. It doesn't sound weird, but trust me it gets freaky. Some fellow with his tiny girlfriend was parked right next to the keyboard and when Mr. Linnell gave him the three second stare, the poor fellow looked kind of undone. I wasn't sure what to make of it, but it made the performance more personal, if a little intense.) Ana Ng, for which the crowd went wild. Birdhouse, for which the crowd went wild. Dr. Worm. Rabbi Vole's solo included holding a big red guitar up in the air to play it and the audience going wild. And rightly so. Go, Rabbi, Go! Alphabet of Nations, off the upcoming new kid's album. Good fun. Flansburgh said the band liked playing it. We liked hearing it, so everybody won. Boss of Me, which the audience sang loudly. Robot Parade ( Give me an R! Give me another R! Give me another R! What doesn't that spell!) The vox was so distorted the only reason I could tell what he was shouting was I could see his lips moving. But Flans had the crowd at his command on this one. Spine. Hate the song, hated the way it was sung, but the rest of the audience loved it. Particle Man - this was excellent entertainment. Corn Mo came back and did a two-accordion jam with Mr. Linnell, which was amusing, getting to watch the two men watching each other's fingerwork to make sure they coordinated. Accordion jam, tee hee. It was sung by the performers and the audience with delight. Mr. Linnell then proceeded to sing it again in Russian. Why Russian? Who knows? The entire front row got covered in Linnell spit. She's an Angel. Not usually a favorite of mine, but Mr. Linnell came down to center stage near the edge and did a really fine performance about four feet from my nose. It just didn't have the silly asthmatic feel of an accordion during this song. Maybe it was subsonics coming through the floorboards, the late hour, or that major phattie someone burned down nearby, but it was kinda numinous. I closed my eyes and let it wash over me. Marvelous, just supremely marvelous. Okay, it was probably the contact high, but this is my mid-life crisis so let me enjoy it. :) No, on third thought, I think Mr. L just hit the groove with this one. Fingertips. Different people in the band took turns singing the tiny snippets that comprise Fingertips. Fun. This might have been where Dan Miller did an "accoustic" solo that was pretty transcendent, and I had to listen with closed eyes. (See above in re this being my mid-life crisis and letting me enjoy it.) End of the Tour. I think this was the last song, and poignantly sung. This review is getting so long that even I'm getting bored, so just let me finish by saying that They Might Be Giants really delivered, and that the fans were raucous, nice, and chatty, which was a great break from some other live music experiences I have had where being a newbie is a crime punishable by derision and scorn. Disappointment at no signing of CDs afterwards, as They sped off in a taxi, but all in all, not a bad road trip, even if it did not recapture my fleeing youth. If you missed Them, I'm sad for you. Great bunch, good concert; go Giants! _____________________________ "Anything that makes you pay more attention than you want to is an irritant" - John Flansburgh. _____________________________ [Attachment omitted, unknown MIME type or encoding (text/html)] Dan's pickup is also inside the guitar; that thing in the soundhole is just a piece of rubber to prevent feedback (like this: http://www.elderly.com/accessories/items/FBR2.htm). You're not the first to suggest this, but I really don't see it as being that likely. Sure, it's possible. It's also possible that the Johns are going to become gospel singers. But I think it's important to consider two things: 1. In the past few years, TMBG has been touring pretty much constantly. Probably considerably more than average for a band, since they've played a lot of shows when they really didn't have a specific product to promote. They probably need a rest. 2. A lot of recent interviews I've seen with the Johns have them talking about how they still enjoy working together. So why would they stop? Granted, they could become a non-touring band, like post-English Settlement XTC or the late-period Beatles. I don't know how likely that is, though. So no, I don't think they're never going to tour again, and I definitely don't think it's the end for TMBG. But hey, maybe you doom-and-gloom prophets will have the last laugh after all.
