The song is quite simple - it's about a really average jazz musician who thinks that a flashy stage name is going to win him a career. He sits around his house all day practicing.

"I leave the front door open 'cuz I can't hear the doorbell..."
"I like to play the drums, I think I'm getting good, but I can handle criticism."

Here's a man who has not yet become comfortable with himself as a musician, but has already drempt up this fantasy star character he wants to be when he becomes famous. He plays the drums, and he wants to be good so that "Someday somebody else besides me will call me by my stage name..." Basically it's about someone who wants to be big, but has the wrong idea. Kind of like high school garage bands who have flashy names, T-shirts, etc. before they actually write a single song. Dr. Worm is everyone who's ever had dreams of growing up to trash hotel rooms and throw up on MTV. Or something like that.
