The backwards message at the beginning of the song has little to do with the song's content. It is a message left on Their answering machine from the local police department, and says, "Thanks a lot guys. From the N.Y.P.D. We love ya."
It is hard to do a line-by-line analysis of this song, but the general plot seems to be about a ruined relationship. The bitter singer is willing to "admit that true love can die," as he sings about a lot of destructive imagery. It's too late for his former love to apologize to him. There is a little wordplay involved, such as "he's my lower half" punning on "better half."
According to Flansie, the song is about "falling in love with someone, falling out of love with them, and then hunting them down and killing them."
