This is a classic TMBG falling-out-of-love song. The early verses of the song point to the slow death of the relationship. In each part of the lyrics, the couple responds to problems by narrowing their eyes-- not paying attention to the problems. The avoidance causes more and more problems until the relationship finally ends as the song closes. The couple recognizes the fact that their love is never returning. They "race to the bottom of a glass" to try to forget their problems through drink.
