Quoth Dave Madden <dcmst25@pop.pitt.edu>:

its the voice of an animal speaking to the humam race saying, "get off my back, jack!" but since the animal is unfamiliar with human terms he says "get off my head, fred." hence stand on your own head.

but more than that, he loves the world, and he's ready to sue the human race, the ones who cant stand (without destroying the earth), for custody of it.

he fears humans cause theyre so destructive, especially when theyre out of furniture. "hey let's cut down s'more trees!" say the humans...

"but my home!" says the animal narrator.

all this furry little guy wants is some skin to call his own, not to call a rub in front of the firplace. this song is his plea, which is actually quite angry, to the human race to stoppit all now.

Quoth Hamster <enielsen@top.monad.net>:

I always saw _Stand_ as God talking to/about humanity.

"I love people / they're the ones who can't stand"

A lot of people question the existance/benignity of God because of war and suffering etc. - but it's becuae we hate each other, not God hating us.

"I see smoke signals coming from them / they saw we are out of furniture"

People are always asking for help from God (prayer - smoke signals), because they've screwed things up. Could we be out of furniture because we burn it for smoke signals?

"Stand on your own head"

...And stop standing on his, so to speak.

"Give me some skin to call my own"

Either he's asking to be left alone, r just doesn't want to be interpreted anymore. (A subliminal message from the Johns? ;)

"You made my day, now you have to sleep in it."

"Okay," says God, "You want fire, you'll get fire." Meaning that God is waht you make of him/her. (Okay, that was weak.)

"I love the world, and If I have to sue for custody, I will sue for custody."

If we screw thing up to badly, God will intervene (take over?), or "sue for custody."

Quoth Matt Shapiro <shapir15@pilot.msu.edu>:

I think "Stand On Your Own Head" is TMBG's views towards trendy people ("I like people/they're the ones who can't stand) and (Stand on your own head for a change/Gimme some skin to call my own)...all these new bands wish they could be as cool as TMBG...
