In a sense, the sound of this track harkens back to the earliest They Might Be Giants recordings. All the percussion is from a tiny Yamaha sound module. The bass is a Cello plucked by Mr. Garo Yellin. The words, which visit the themes of depression, alcoholism, and self destruction, are the original products of our own imaginations, although the chorus makes fleeting reference to a popular soft-rock song from the 70s: "Precious and few are the moments we two can share."
Quoth Carl Gehrman <chuckg29@us.net>:
I couldn't help but notice that the line, "Full bottle in front of me", seemed to harken back to a line from an old twisted tune, "Frontal Lobotomy," which went: "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than have to have a frontal lobotomy." If this reference is anything more than just a coincidence, then it is possible that the Johns are suggesting that the escapist methods used by the subject of "Your Own Worst Enemy" are not *entirely* in vain, as is the case in "Frontal Lobotomy" (where the narrator is saved from a frontal lobotomy and a trip to the nut house through means of excessive drinking).
