Mr.Blobby started out in a UK television show called "Noel's House Party", hosted by Noel Edmonds. Anyway, one slot in this show was/is known as the "Gotcha Oscars", where they get celebrities into the weirdest situations and see if they can work out it's a wind-up. Sort of a celebrity "Candid Camera". A couple of series' ago, they devised a new set-up, where they would invite celebrities to present a spoof children's television show. This fake show was, unsurprisingly, hosted by the famous Mr. Blobby. They created him as the most ludicrous character they could come up with. Basically, he just wanders around shouting, "Blobby! Blobby!", etc., and knocking things over. And still very few of the celebs realised it was a set-up. Unfortunately, Mr. Blobby got so popular (BECAUSE he was so stupid), he started making guest appearances throughout the "House Party", started doing public appearances, got invited to open supermarkets, blah blah blah. You get the idea. He even released a single, which got an Xmas No.1. And a computer game. And you can't go anywhere over here in the U.K. without being confronted by Mr.Blobby balloons, bubble bath, socks, and all the usual kiddy merchandise. *sigh* As you can probably tell, I don't like him much either. (now if we only knew what the hell they mean!) > Its still one of my fav. TMBG songs. Philip It's not that hard, I think. It sounds like Ana and the singer ( I refuse to say John, because there's no proof that he's the speaker) Have had some kind of long distance relationship (like pen pals) for a very long time, but they have never been able to meet, for some reason or another. So he's written her this song, hoping she will hear it, saying that this is what he would say to her if they could ever be together. The part about there being a "me for you" I think relates to the whole soul-mate thing in our culture. You know how people say that there is one right person out there for them? He's basically saying that they are not meant to be. At least, that's my interp. Any others? I pay for my internet access, and I have very little time to waste on mediocre things, but I personally love the power that this group has in inspiring off-topic conversations, and, I'm pretty sure that I could tie any conversation back to TMBG that I have seen on this group. i.e. How about the T.V. video references that I was discussing a few days ago. I was surprised that it was made into a single. It seems overrated. My Lincoln favorites have to be Where Your Eyes Don't Go and Snowball in Hell, No, wait...Kiss Me, Son of God or Ana Ng. People like it the way it is now. People are definately against any sort of moderation or other content-policeing. That's fine with me. The responces were split between having replies go to the list, and having them go to the origional sender. I think I will keep them going to the list just because that's the way it's always been. As for the digest length, I've gotten a couple of responces to make it a little smaller. Apparently some (broken) software is unhappy with a message over 32K, so I've set the digest size at about 30K to keep people happy. I doubt I'll go any smaller as that would make them come out too often. - --Your friendly list admin. - -- 'Cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able to make it enough for you to be open wide, no, and every time you speak her name does she know how you told me you'd hold me until you died, 'til you died, but you're still alive. ------------------------------ End of They Might Be Giants Digest V1 #23 *****************************************
