Flans kept going over and having little asides with Linnell between songs which made them both grin and giggle - you could tell they were having a blast playing together, which was nice. The whole show would have been great if it weren't for all of the (barely) adolescent moshers... > In the concert, Flanny said various tidbits: > My personal favorites were a couple of the song intros. We understand each other!" Before Why Does The Sun Shine?: "We want *you*... to want - the sun!" [Cheap Trick Live At Budokan reference, for those who don't get it] Also, there was an aborted attempt at Spin the Dial, but Flans got frustrated at finding nothing decent on the air. Date: Sat, 18 May 1996 02:23:45 -0500 (EST) Tonight at Bogart's, *Flans* did the conducting part at the end of Spy. Has anybody ever seen that happen before? It was a pretty good show overall, but not quite as good perhaps as the Newport show. Only because the band seemed tired and less energetic at Bogart's. I was pleasantly surprised that the crowd was *extrememly* well-behaved. This was probably in part due to a policy that stage divers and corwd surfers get booted. There was no moshing to speak of, though, so everybody actually got to watch the show without having to try to defend themselves. Before the show, the band had the announcer read off a list of TMBG-sanctioned dances, including "pogo, square dance, Conga lines, the Twist, and the Bird, but no line dancing and absolutely no Electric Glide!" I think this approach made an impression on the crowd (and there were some decent Conga lines!) I think some other cool stuff may have happened, and I might share it with you when I recover... m@t p.s. This hypothesis is also supported by the line "you were a flaming >wreck, when we kissed at the overpass." (Car and fire imagery). I've always taken the line "Then came a knock at the door, which was odd, and the picture abruptly changed" to mean that the driver of the car wasn't paying attention, maybe drifting into sleep or another state of mind. When the two cars hit ("knock at the door"), he was jolted back into reality ("the picture abruptly changed"). Shrug. Depending on how you pour water down the sink, you can actually get it to spiral either way when it goes down the drain due to inertia and other stuff I'll never understand.... Just a silly observation. So I brought up the "1st TMBG Experience" thread but didn't mention what mine was .... seems similar to everyone else's that I've heard actually. Two friends of mine, one from elementary and middle school, one from high school, each independently told me I'd like TMBG (this was about 1990 when I was a soph. in h.s.). It ended up that I went to Summerfest (a cool Milwaukee tradition for over 25 years, I think, with lots of food, music, and beer by the lakefront, the last of which I will actually get to enjoy this year for the first time) with this friend of mine who brought Flood on tape. We listened to it in the car on the way there, I read the lyrics, and I was hooked.... I dubbed it then later bought the CDs. My younger brother then started listening to them as well and actually had A18 before I did. I feel like this is some weird TMBG Anonymous mailing list or something... Like "Hi, my name is Jason and I've been a TMBG-a-holic for 5 years...." Not to say I don't like it -- on the contrary, it's a group after my own heart... not only TMBG, but also spoonerisms, Twin Peaks (although I don't remember any quotes from it, I saw every episode once), and other useless trivia... On a TMBG note, I went out and bought Lincoln on vinyl, used, today, just to see how it sounds.... And as far as foreign languages go, I'm reasonably proficient in German (well, school-level, not really fluent) and sometimes sing along with TMBG in German... but it's always interspersed with English to replace the words I don't know... "Warum ist das Welt wieder in Liebe?" It never really fits the meter.... Apparently, they are HUGE at U of C--they sound like th Fugees and were really good). Anyway, then TMBG came on! I was so happy! They played (not in this order): WDTSS Subliminal Snail Shell Sleeping in the Flowers James K. Polk Spiralling Shape I (NC) Particle Man Twistin Birdhouse in your Soul Meet James Ensor How can I Sing Like a Girl? SEXXY XTC vs. Adam Ant Conderfeit Faker AKA Driver Older The Guitar Spider Ana Ng Spy Don't Lets Start (that's all I can remember) Since it was my first show, I thought it to be amazing. Although, I was all excited about Spin the Dial, and they never did that. John conducted "Spy" again, and the other John screwed up Triangle/Person man again (someone on the list-I think Been was talking about this). XTC vs. Adam Ant was the 1st song of the encore, Flanny talked about the History of Rock and Roll, and said that it's good that they didn't suck. (most definitely) A few things I noted during the show---Flans has big muscles in his calves (for looking like he doesn't work out)!!!! I was right below him the entire time and I was marveling at them. I could even see that he doesn't have a lot of hair on his arms + legs b/c I was only 7 feet from him. He never looked down at me. :( Has anyone ever noticied how bored JL looks while they are playing? He sat at the keyboards and looked pretty bored. But, i would swear that he looked and me and was smiling at me. I knew the words to almost every song (the three new ones were the only ones I didn't know), and I swear he would watch me as I sang them. :) JF threw out tshirts right before the encore and this girl right in front of me got one (she didn't even know any of the words to the songs--what a poser). Anyway, then at the end, she grabbed for a set list. What a biatch! I was kind of mad at that. One more thing, JF forgot the words "Birds are singing" (something like that) from their new song that they wrote a few weeks ago. Anyway, sorry for the long post.
