Some of you seemed to miss the specific details of my first post, so I'll take this opportunity to clarify my earlier statements. Read on... Fran(sburgh) commented: >I AM A 'CELLIST! it's my life...please don't tell me that i'm below my chosen >profession...(and i am 18...) whatever. sorry, i just don't like stereotypical teenage >comments... Neither do I. You missed two key things about the strings comment: a) the use of the word *some* (teenagers) instead of *all* (teenagers), which would not make my comments applicable to you and b) the word I used in my post to describe my comments, which was "theory". I'm putting this forth as a theory, and not necessarily as a fact. I never said or implied you were below your chosen profession, Fran. The point I was making is that music with stringed instruments is just not very popular with the teenage population as a whole, therefore that might be a reason why *some* people on this list (many of whom are teenagers) don't like S-E-X-X-Y and XTC vs. Adam Ant. Nothing stereotypical about a theory worked through to a logical conclusion. Kirsten Brodbeck commented: >I'm sorry, I just found the tone of this post to be a tad condescending. I'm sure it wasn't >meant to sound that way, but that's the way I took it. You're taking it too personally, Kristen. As soon as I used the word *some* instead of *all*, you should have realized that this post wasn't referring to you. You may like a lot of music your parents listen to, but most teenagers are not like that, believe me. I can personally attest to this, having been a teenager no less than eighteen months ago. Eric Webber comments: >First of all there are just as many young people listening to music with >strings as there are adults Not music *dominated* with strings. There's more of a generation gap than you think. I'm sure a higher percentage of adults listen to music with strings, seeing as classical music is much more popular with older people. Not many popular bands these days feature strings in their recordings. Nirvana did (on "Unplugged in New York") and the Smashing Pumpkins do sometimes ("Disarm", for example), but most (popular) bands end up doing rock. William Tatalovich commented: >perhaps [your post was] to make yourself (or XTC) feel superior to all of us "teenagers" >on this list... Reread my post. Notice how there are no absolute phrases such as "all of you teenagers" in that third paragraph. How could I possibly be trying to make myself feel superior to "all of you teenagers" when I'm not even talking about "all of you teenagers"? Or any teenagers, for that matter (if my theory is totally without merit). I'm not sure how I could make XTC feel superior to the people on this list. None of the band members take much interest in the Internet. >I hate to be personified as the kind of person who speaks in monosyllabic tones and >bounces around idiotically to television commercials. Putting words into someone else's mouth is no substitute for an argument, William. My point was that people should condense their one-sentence posts into one long, single post. It's not too unreasonable to suspect these people might posess a short attention span. Being the operator of a mailing list (Scritti Politti) myself, one sentence posts that liberally quote previously posted text would be a source of annoyance to me, anyway... >If you don't like the kinds of discussion, then get off the list. I never proposed that anyone ought to quit the list. I simply suggested that they be more like Joshua Hall-Bachner (who was mysteriously absent from both this list and the Chalkhills one today) in the construction of their posts. >I've seen Them twice, and I spoke to Flans after the first show I went to. If they suddenly >became world superstars, I am afraid that would change. John and John are just two >guys who play terrific music--I don't want that to be messed up. I think you should have a little more faith in the Johns songwriting talent. A rise in popularity is by no means synonomous with a decline in musical quality. It's only been one day since I posted my "manifesto", and I've gotten more than a dozen responses. (And if you're interested but haven't responded yet, please do!). Anyway, since it's past 4:00 AM, and I've got to be at work in a few of hours, I will forego my individual replies in favor of this group announcement. (I will, however, reply to everyone when I get home later.) Basically, I think there is going to be a lot of support for the project, but a little patience may be required. It will probably take a couple of weeks for me to organize everyone, and try to connect people with each other. In the meantime, I urge you to start working out your ideas. Remember, it's supposed to be a fun project- if you are a writer, and haven't really drawn before, maybe you want to give it a shot, and vice versa. Of course, that's just an option. Do whatever you want to do. As for content, Chrissy X had an idea she wanted to share, so here it is: > I think these comicky ideas are great. However, I think they'd be much better if they > were based on characters from songs rather than the Johns themselves. > I really like the idea of reading about Mr. horrible and the ugliness man, or Mr. me > or Rabid child. The list is endless and I think it could be really cool. > That's my encouragement on the whole thing anyway. > Chrissy x I think it's an exciting notion. If it starts any gears moving, go with it. Of course, don't limit yourselves to anyone else's preconcieved ideas of what a TMBG comic should be about. Any strange, wacky, exciting, inventive ideas are encouraged. Umm, I can't seem to think of much more at the moment. Maybe it's just from lack of sleep, but I think I'll say good-bye for now just the same. If you've got ideas, start scribbling them down! -Cuper P.S. I saw the show at Roseland a few hours ago. I'd like to say I enjoyed it but after missing my train and then developing a bad headache, a rock n' roll show was not quite where I wanted to be. And, of course, an hour after the show, my illness faded. My friends said it was good, but it was almost like not being ther at all. Reading your last post, I realized that what came out was a lot more severe than what you meant. Sorry for jumping to conclusions. I do have to defend this comment above, though. I didn't mean to suggest that musical quality declines with increased popularity. Y'see, I have an interest in the drug, Tryptophan (chemical name, L-tryptophan). I quote from 1979, on a study at the Liverpool Psychiatric Day Hospital: "the side effects (of Tryptophan) were first noticed when women patients complained to nurses that the men taking the tablets were talking non-stop about sex and chatting up the female patients all the time". That's like saying you'll believe in any church just because you believe in god. Faith is not a necessary item in the listening of music. Personal taste and opinion, however, are some things that I would hope music listeners would exude. Hope is also something. I can certainly hope that of TMBG's next record I will like everything and I can hope that this list hasn't gone entirely to hell, but let's not confuse this with faith, FS has lost my faith in TMBG. As pertains to strings. Strings are quite nice. Strings were perhaps the very beginning of good Beatles music (I.E. Yesterday). You will be hard pressed to find a member of this group that does not thoroughly enjoy Kiss Me Son of God. It is understood that you said "some teenagers," but it is not entirely wise to post to a group flooded with teenagers a generalization about their particular age group. It is obvious from their massive response that the strings are not the reason for the majority of this group's dislike for S-E-X-X-Y and XTC vs. Adam Ant. I myself find the strings to be quite refreshing in S-E-X-X-Y and the _only_ saving grace of XTC vs. Adam Ant. (long post) hello. its me. i went to MY FIRST TMBG CONCERT last night!!!! it was so awesome. i went in at like 6 30,and was in front of everyone!!! nothing was blocking my view, luckily i was more to the side, avoiding the crowd surfers. unfortunatly,i did not meet ANYONE from the list. me and my friends constantly screamed out "whose on the list???" but no one answered, and we saw someone with a broom in the middle of the show, but the guards took it away from him,so my only hope was foiled. oh well. well,to tell where i was to all who went---remember during "how can i sing like a girl", flans, went to the end of the stage, kneeled down and shoved his guitar in the audience, motioning us to touch iT? well i was right there,. i reached my arm out,but i was LITERALLY an inch to short. i was so pissed off. but it was cool anyway. HIGHLIGHTS------ when they played NO ONE KNOWS MY PLAN. i heard they only play a little of it,but it was the whole thing. ANA NG, after all this talk of "no pre-flood songs",i was shocked when they played this!!! i loved when they SANG "i dont want the world,i just want your half" SPY, it was just so funny when linnel was conducting the band, and then later us. EXCUISITE DEAD GUY. the puppets were so cool and disturbing. when it was linnells turns to sing the verses, flans's dummy looked at the drums. and linnell looked like he was having a great time WHEN LINNELL MADE DIRECT EYE CONTACT WITH ME AND MY FRIENDS. i forgot what song, but there was a time when linnell was banging down on the keyboard with the back of his hand, and he looked to the side,in my direction and i made eye contact with him, though that wasnt as good as when flansburgh sticked his guitar in my face!!! Well, Matt James, the birthday boy, Mary Ellen, Sarah, Nola, and Cortney just left my humble apartment. I trust that they are all fine and not trying to call me right now. (aack!) We all went to Roseland last night, and oh what a fun time I had. Cortney got hit really hard in the back of the head by an evil crowd surfer, but the bouncer was really nice and brought her an ice pack. It was a little rough, but better than Albany, definitely. (And as it turned out, my friend Lisa and I had met one of the bouncers before at a Girls Against Boys/Therapy/Skeleton Key show, and he had been really nice there, as well.) Anywoo... This was my fourth cub show, and they seemed to be having fun with the crowd. Or at least with the confused looks the crowd was giving them. They played an excellent set, and I am glad that they played NYC. After all, it is _their_ song, and a strong arguement could be made for their version over TMBG's. (Flame away... I'm flame resistant. Especially on this point, since I've been a cub fan for quite a while and cub's Version of NYC accompanied me on my heinous 22 hour drive through "The Blizzard of 1996".) cub played my favorite song from "Box of Hair"... "Magic 8 Ball." (Incidentally, the studio version includes an accordion.) And the electric tennis racket player, who played with them the last time I saw them in New York, always adds something to the show. Magnetic Fields were also quite good, and I thought the crowd heckling of them was beyond unneccessary. I mean, really, even if you don't like them, I think everyone can agree that they were better than the country music tape that was on infinite repeat before the show and between the sets. TMBG were, of course, wonderful. But I figure that their set is going to be covered in infinite detail by everyone else who was there. They seemed happy and energetic and ready for the tour ahead, though Linnell looked as though he was running on auto-pilot during "Particle Man." (Linnell did seem to notice the commotion surrounding Cortney's head injury. Though how much of it he could see is always a negotiable point.) When Andy came out, my friend Lisa and I screamed, "You're better than Conan," but we were overshouted by people screaming, "You suck!" Well, that's about it. I purchased two cub 7"s which I've wanted to order for a while (Volcano and the split with the Potatomen) and a green "brush, floss, gargle, cub" t-shirt to go with that really loud orange "box of hair" shirt I have. Ah. It was just so incredibly cool to see three bands I like in one fine show! I'm not sure how many of you know of them, but they are simply amazing. Consisting of a piano, bass, and drums, these guys put out some amazingly rocking stuff. Seeing them play live (especially when standing right next to Ben Folds the entire time) is really cool too. They have a new album recorded, but it won't be released until March of 1997. I personally love it. I guess it might be because they're more of a band and less of two guys and a drum machine, but it is still an incredibly cool album. With Them, though, you can go to a show and stand a few feet away from Them, you can go talk to Them after the show, etc. Also, though, I'm sure that these people don't want those bands to stop making good music (although that's hard, considering how both bands are now defunct...). Hello TMBGer's! This is cortney, I just got back from the most amazing show!!! Firstly however, I would like to extend my most heartfelt thanks to Julie (Brooksie) for sharing her wonderful apartment and making this weekend possible! Well, my adventure began Friday morning - I came to New York City all by my lonesome (it took too many confusing trains to get there!) I was *extremely* early, so I wandered around the Big Apple for a while and took in the sights - then around 4pm I got in line at the Roselands. (Needless to say, I was the *first* person there!) Soon, however, I was joined by Will (a lister!) and some very cool people from UMass. While there were still only the five of us in line, Brian Doherty came up to us to say Hi! (He also said that he remembered me from the Philly show!) Brian also told us about how very much he liked those neato necklaces that we saw Them wearing on Conan! Alex, Julie and friends joined me in line, and soon after we were allowed in. The show itself was absolutely amazing! I am a Cub fan (although I'm not as hard-core as Julie!), so I was pretty psyched to get to see them live for the first time! Julie, the huge fan that she is, enjoyed them *at least* as much as TMBG, that's how good they were! Magnetic Fields was also very cool, although by this time I was anxious to see TMBG! Finally, TMBG came out (Since I was there so incredibly early, we were front row center, the very best seat in the house!) As always, TMBG was excellent! They had a great set-list (some of my personal highlights: Ana Ng, Metal Detector, No One Knows My Plan, Until My Head Falls Off, the list goes on and on!) My sole complaint about the show was the evil crowdsurfers! That definitely took away from the show (at least in my opinion!) Actually, at one point, I was kicked in the head pretty hard, it wasn't fun. However, everyone was extremely helpful and nice, the cool security guard even got me ice! I also got to meet incredibly cool friends at this show, new and old! Hello to Julie, Frankie, Matt, Nola, Sarah, Ethan, Will, Mary Beth, and to everyone else, you know who you are! Also, I apologize to everyone that I might have missed! (Cuper: definitely next time!) And also as always, the TMBG show was over entirely too soon, I was sad to see Them go....HOWEVER! They said that They were coming back to New York February 8th, I'll be there with bells on! Oh, one more highlight: I got one of Brian Doherty's drumsticks!!! The nice security guard (who got ice for me) definitely gave me the pity vote when he handed me that stick! After the show, too many of us to name hung out at Around the Clock, a very cool place! I also got to meet Mike (Kohn?), Julie's very good friend, and Tom, from You Were Spiralling...my weekend was Flooded with supercool people!!!!! I'm sorry that this post was so incredibly long, but I could not have done any justice to this review if I made it any shorter! It was an awesome awesome experience, thank you to everyone, hope to see you all again soon! sun and smiles loce love cortney http://ocelot.uofs.edu/student/ck8 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Nov 1996 22:57:27 -0500 (EST) From: Lawrence P Solomon Subject: Re: TMBG: The net chats Excerpts from internet.music.tmbg: 9-Nov-96 TMBG: The net chats by Josh@fyi.net > Sorry for the caps, but wouldn't this be a major thing? If they had 22 songs available for FS, but only 13 made the album. This leaves 9 more songs, plus any more they write before summer, which lasts until August, giving them almost a year to come up with 5 or 6 more songs. Not too difficult. I think we can expect to see on it: Reprehensible Certain People I Could Name Counterfeit Faker Older than You've Ever Been They Got Lost On the Drag and about 8 or 9 others... perhaps they'll bring back Become a Robot and Hell Hotel... HAPPY BIRTHDAY MATT JAMES! WHOO-HOO!! Anyway. *ahem*. < I wonder if the proliferation of people on this list with < short-attention spans is the reason why people seem to < dislike Factory Showroom. All of a sudden, the Giants are < fleshing out their songs instead of putting forth sketchy, < underdeveloped tunes (most clocking in at three minutes plus) < and everyone's headed for the emergency chute to take them < back to the Bar/None years. Perhaps there's another reason... How is this an indication of a short attention span? Sometimes, there is something to be said for a short, concise statement, musical or otherwise. Some songs just don't need to be fleshed out, much in the way some short stories and poems would be ruined by telling too much. TMBG as the Ernest Hemingway of rock. Hee hee. :) < ...for example, the fact that the two Factory Showroom songs < people most often dismiss are "XTC vs. Adam Ant" and < "S-E-X-X-Y". What do these two songs have in common? < Prominently featured string ensembles. Something that these < teenagers' (who dominate this list) parents would be more likely < to listen to. I have to wonder if string sections aren't a little too < sophisticated for some younger members of their audience. Um, no, Dave, that's not it. While I, too, would have to say that "XTC vs. Adam Ant" is one of my least fave FS songs, I consider the string part to be what (sort of) saves it. It's the rest of it, believe it or not, that doesn't really do much for me. Oh yeah, and I'm 20, by the way. Look < at their earlier stuff and you'll hear a lot of accordion (of course). < The accordion is a goofy instrument, who can resist it? < Dave O'Connell < York PA I don't think the accordion is inherently goofy, it's just that it is, as you said, associated with the goofy-ass genre of polka. Generally, I don't think that They utilize the accordion in a goofy way at all--maybe I've just gotten so used to hearing it that it doesn't seem weird at all to me anymore. I recently posted a copy of an interview with Linnell in which he talked about how he chose the accordion, and it wasn't for any goofiness factor, actually. I believe he said something about it "just making sense from so many different angles" and because it was a keyboard instrument that didn't seem overused. --Tara ------------------------------ Subject: TMBG: Atlanta show From: jenifer.stewart@juno.com (Jenifer W Stewart) Date: Sat, 09 Nov 1996 23:44:44 EST Atlanta tix just went on sale yesterday;)!!
